Musical genius; trailblazer; a complex and innovative artist; an iconic and particularly intuitive poet/lyricist; a very skillful multi-instrumentalist; and a superb vocalist with unique phrasing, a great sense of rhythm, and a spiritual soul... that's Van.
@@AnnE-mn8nySome of Van Morrison's lyrics clearly are statements. I happen to disagree with some of his views of what counts as "tyranny" regarding issues in the pandemic, but I support his right of expression and indeed laud his courage. He's a great man. We should have hearts and voices that are free, but we should always count the broad effect our message may have, and considerately weigh the benefit or price to others who accept our view as we present it from our art, position, and platform.
The smoking sax player is Pee Wee Ellis (RIP) who played with James Brown before Morrison. Note two drummers. The lead guitarists is John Platania who still plays with Morrison in the US today. Platania's other gig is with Chip Taylor who wrote Wild Thing. The Bass guitarist David Hayes and the keyboards player John Allair still tour with Morrisons band for US tours.
Van often name-checks the sources of his love of rhythm & blues and jazz music from his youth in Belfast, listening on shortwave radio to the wavelengths of The Voice of America and U.S. Armed Forces Radio. And he grew up to be a master of his brand of Celtic Soul music. What a legendary performer.
There are several of Van's Wavelength renditions on video, all as great as this one, but his live session from 2/1/1979-Belfast is one for the ages. Everyone on stage is terrific, but Bass guitarist David Hayes is simply amazing.
1976, my best buddy calls, says he has tickets for 3,000 seat theater in Passaic NJ and his girlfriend cancelled. Now I had heard of VM and knew a few hit songs. But I was more into other harder rock music at the time. So I go, we're like 12th row center, I am blown away for 2 solid hours. Seriously I had seen Aerosmith and Nugent and Pink Floyd before, but Morrison blew my mind. I ran the next day to get my first VM album, I now have over 40 of his albums and as any of my kids could tell you, he is my all time favorite musician !!!
Wow. Amazing live performance. Just the intro of the instruments joining together with the horns, so enticing. Beautiful 1978 love song by Van, with reference to "Brown Eyed Girl", with the lines, "Won't You Play That Song Again For Me, About My Lover, My Lover in The Grass". Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and John. Great song. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
This song was my adult awakening to Van. While I knew most of his earlier hits as a youngster, I was in my mid-teens when this song came out and I've been a fan ever since. I spent most of my college years buying every Van album. He continues to be my single favorite musical artist.
Loved seeing the live performance of this - thanks John for the suggestion. I do however think the album version is soo much more energy in it. It's one of those songs that can take you from a blah day to a smile on your face every time. So much soul in one man - a true legend.
V.M. is probably one of the hardest-working musicians ever. There is hardly an album that is not successful. it's just fantastic what albums the man has put out - he has my respect anyway! Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
Here is what you need to do. Pony up transatlantic air fare, and see Van play at small venues in Belfast You can see him perform at the Eupropa ballroom, and dinner is included. I have done it three times and love it.
On my bucket list!! Saw him at Jones Beach Theatre on Long Island, sat up in the stage rafters, after a backstage pass to meet his band. He doesn't come out from the dressing room until backstage is empty. Nothing like seeing him from above. A totally different experience! ☘️💚☘️
Pee Wee.Ellis plays on Common One; a phenomenal album. Veedon Fleece is also simply wonderful.Too Late to Stop Now is perhaps the greatest live album ever: with the incomparable, Listen to the Lion. 10:11
John, Congrats on picking this one from Van Morrison. This is the first time I have seen this video performance, thank you. Harri, you certainly liked this really great performance and did an excellent review, as always. Rock on, Besties!!!!!!!
Great request John! I had the extreme good fortune to see Van Morrison in concert in Boston around 1979-80. It was a great thrill. Thanks for your request. 🌺✌️
Thanks, Debbie. One of the reasons I chose this is I rarely see Van playing guitar live. Most fans don't know his primary instrument is saxophone. In fact, I'm thinking of requesting a video with Van playing sax that is very recent. Maybe next month or early next year.
I need an IV stat of Van Morrison! And, only he will do. When I'm dosed straight up by this Liquid Soul of his, believe me. I feel fine. All's right on with the world. Thanx, Harri. Well done.
As much as I like this live version of Wavelength, I actually prefer the studio recording of it. While the intro is shorter and nowhere near as powerful with the horns blowing etc, Van gets into his falsetto voice on a level that very few blue eyed soul singers can reach. If you’ve never heard it, it’s truly worth a click and the smile you won’t be able to resist 😸
I do too and I can imagine a live audience creates a different vibe a different environment thus a different sound. With Mr. Van Morrison it's all good though. Blessings to you all. 🎉 😊 ❤.
Van is the Man!! of course I grew up listening..so may be predjudiced that way. Please if you haven't all ready...check out Miss Norah Jones.."come away with me" and Sturgil Simpson "breaker's roar"
I think that "Motown baseline" as you described it is the same one used by the band on the Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Loose". (My favorite cover was from The Chambers Brothers. Please check them out covering Wilson Picket's Midnight Hour.)
This whole concert is out of sight man , Sax man Peewee Ellis former James Brown sax man. He stayed with Van many years 80s into the 90s and was his musical director. Van smoked also, most musicians did in those days as well having a few nips even on stage. Everything was loose and free
Thanks HarriBest Rea, thats a great thing you did there, I saw you enjoy it, and you made sense about the song, I would argue, that there are better versions though, but thats just me being a dick👍
Wavelength is from the 1978 studio album of the same name. I think my favorite track from this album is Natalia. ua-cam.com/video/TsyQ1Ws787k/v-deo.html

Love your definition!!! Thank you.
We are very lucky.

Pee Wee Ellis does an awesome solo on Tupelo Honey with Van Morrison live.
Chip Taylor is John Voigt's brother.

Keep playing Van. Any Van.
Nobody has a voice like Van Morrison. Another great choice John.☮️
Van Morrison has been blowing my mind for the past year, an incredible back catalogue. It’s how I arrived here watching your reaction
The thing about Van he is a multi instrumental player, a very talented dude. And still playing to this very day.
There are several of Van's Wavelength renditions on video, all as great as this one, but his live session from 2/1/1979-Belfast is one for the ages. Everyone on stage is terrific, but Bass guitarist David Hayes is simply amazing.
I can say a true legend. Phenomenal musician love him.
I've been my husband's brown eyed girl for 48 years now. He's very talented drummer and I was his beauty.
Bless you and bless him 👍

It a beautiful thing that you've found him! He is the quintessential musician! My all-time favorite since 69! Welcome to his joy! ☘️💚☘️
"Moondance" is my favorite Van Morrison song. "Brown Eyed Girl" & "Wild Night" are also good one.
Van Morrison has always been the real deal and his music will live on for years to come because it is timeless !!
love how van plays it different on every live performance,
Van’s voice is an instrument. Floors me every time I hear it. 💙

There are no bad Van Morrison songs. Period. 😀

The best Morrison song few know. Saw Van many moons ago. Rock on.
Van Morrison has such amazing talent. I love all of his music.

Same here. And he continues to write great songs.
“TB Sheets” was the first song that really got me listening to Van Morrison.
opening song of the finest live DVD of all time

Both of the wedding songs I'm going to dance with my daughters are going to be Van Morrison songs
Personal favorite of mine love you
I really picked up on the sax player, too! Van always puts together a fantastic group.
Different from the studio version, but I like it more as his stellar band was really able to improvise.
Love your reactions. You are the best!
Amazing song and performance, very smart reactions, thanks. Nice vid!
Very dangerous man. 🖤☘️🥂🚬 thanks Harri

SUPER TALENTED BAND.

Smoking and blowing at the same time classic
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was the first time I think I felt God. The Experience literally touched my soul.
Great request John! I had the extreme good fortune to see Van Morrison in concert in Boston around 1979-80. It was a great thrill. Thanks for your request. 🌺✌️

I have never heard this live version before. I only know the studio version which is a totally different song. Both are equally great.
Van. The. MAN! 💯 Love to see you getting close to 100K!
Moondance is my favorite Van Morrison song.
I need an IV stat of Van Morrison! And, only he will do. When I'm dosed straight up by this Liquid Soul of his, believe me. I feel fine. All's right on with the world. Thanx, Harri. Well done.
Yes I noticed the Sax player smiling like he was smoking weed.
I had forgotten about this song Love it .Thanks for the request.
Anyone else remember Telefunken? Wavelength on my radio.
"AND IT STONED ME" AND "IN TO THE MYSTIC"
I love, love, love this, but mainly for Pee Wee 😍😂

Requesting your reaction to Into the Mystic. To me, one of his best ❤

Great reaction if you want to hear the horns check out Troubadours from the same concert .
Check out *Ballerina and *Haunts of Ancient Peace, on this concert.
And move on up in history to the 90s *Hymns to the Silence*
You won't regret it
Great version...listen to the studio version also...faster and louder
Yes!
Check - Hungry for your Love by Van too - Most Beautiful
The whole Wavelength album is incredible.
It was my first VM album. The first of many. Van is the MAN.
Ireland's finest ☘️🥂🚬🖤🎈now that's a set of lungs. Check out Shane MacGowan and Dermot Kennedy 🖤🖤
1st track of one DVD disc
Oh yeah oh yeah that works
Van does a song with Richard Manuel of THE BAND called 9% Solution (maybe something like that) that is out of this world.
Van is the Man!! of course I grew up listening..so may be predjudiced that way. Please if you haven't all ready...check out Miss Norah Jones.."come away with me" and Sturgil Simpson "breaker's roar"
Great original released 1978. Worth a listen
How about Domino, It Stoned Me, Caravan anything off his album Moondance
The horn man you like is Pete Ellis. Cool to the max.
The Sax is Pee Wee Ellis who created the "JAMES BROWN SOUND"
Bad ass song
LIVE !
Ascot guy, Moody Blues , hip.
If you like Van Morrison you really gotta check out 70s musician, Sixto Rodriguez - ‘Rich Folks Hoax’ or ‘Sugar Man.’
I think that "Motown baseline" as you described it is the same one used by the band on the Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Loose". (My favorite cover was from The Chambers Brothers. Please check them out covering Wilson Picket's Midnight Hour.)
Don’t you notice the similarities between Van and Buckwheat Zydeco, both from New Orleans area!

You’ve never heard “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Into the Mystic”, “Tupelo Honey”?
(Tupelo is where Elvis was born)
Thanks HarriBest Rea, thats a great thing you did there, I saw you enjoy it, and you made sense about the song, I would argue, that there are better versions though, but thats just me being a dick👍
what a slow burn intro
Good live version....but so much different than the recorded version. Like two different songs. Check out the studio version.
I believe the smoker you're talking about is Pee Wee Ellis, one of the greats.
Album came out 1978 this was 1980
A nice rendition but it sounds nothing like the original from the album of the same title. I hope you'll seek out that version as well.
Wavelength is from the 1978 studio album of the same name. I think my favorite track from this album is Natalia. ua-cam.com/video/TsyQ1Ws787k/v-deo.html
RIP Pee Wee Ellis
1978
Voice of America - Trump ?
Music fabulous. Personality not so much.
There are much better versions of this song by a younger Van Morrison available on UA-cam. This video was poorly performed and poorly recorded.
This is a young Van. This video is about 1 or 2 year after album came out. 1980 or so.
