The band gave us a cassette of their album before it was released. When the album was released it sounded different. I never liked the album version as much as the songs on the cassette.
I don't recall the exact date, sometime in 1989. The footage of the girl was in winter and we would have shot the concert footage around that time. Keep in mind this was 20 years ago and we had no idea how big they would become. I do recall my film camera jamming constantly and wishing I had worn ear plugs, because I has standing next to the speaks at one point. :)
I have the master footage which has more "out-takes". I really like the album of songs they gave us (even better than the final album versions). We had no idea they would be as successful as they did.
Glad you liked it. I just recently found the "album" that the band gave us to use for the music bed. They let us pick whatever song we wanted to make a video. The "album" is very different sounding than the final release of the real album.
We shot the footage of the girl around UW Oshkosh. I haven't been back to Oshkosh since 1990, so my memory is failing as the the precise neighborhoods. The shot of walk into her face in slow motion was downtown oshkosh and the stuff with the mirrors was in one of the studios at the school.
Whoever recorded this, did a pretty good job on the drums. They sound really real, and clear, a good smack to the snare, and captures Jimmy's fantastic dynamics since I believe he came from a jazz background and isn't just a drum smasher.
I agree, not only is it marvelously recorded, it's also an awesome performance. The guitar parts, especially the solo, sounds much clearer and well defined than the even album did.
gorgeous video! being 26, i somewhat missed out on really being a part of the whole early 90's music movement...but i can still easily recall being young and knowing something really cool and new was in the air. this video captures that vibe perfectly. this was the last time music this genuine and transcendent actually made waves in the culture. hope it happens again soon.
I made this video with a college friend for a class in film lighting. My friend went to High School with James. The band was about to release there first album. We shot it in Oshkosh Wisconsin and Chicago. We got the blurred motion look by shooting 16mm at like 2 or 4 frames per second and the slowing down the playback. My favorite shot is the one when I walked from across the street into the girls eyes. Almost got hit by a car, but it looks cool.
I met them a few times. Once or twice in Chicago and then again in Madison. This was just before their first album, so they were just a popular local band at the time. The friend I did the video with went to high school with James. Years later we saw them backstage in Los Angeles. I won't say I knew them or they were friends or anything.
Yes it was a school project for a college lighting class. It was never shown anywhere, not even sure if the band saw it. It's been a long time, I can't remember. :)
It's weird seeing Billy Corgan with that much hair! I didn't truly get into Smashing Pumpkins until around 95 (I was 14) and by then he was keeping his hair pretty short. By the time of the 1979 video he stopped having any hair at all!
When we filmed the concert we didn't record audio it was all MOS. The footage of them is from their whole concert not just one song. I do have the entire pre-album album on tape. I liked the pre-album version better than the what on the final album.
We saw her walking around campus and asked her if she would be interested in being in the video. At first she was kinda nervous about it, not know us, but in the end she had fun.
I think it would've been sweet if after the dynamics change and the 'loud' part comes in the framerate would go back to normal as it does in some shots. It'd sync better with the music imo. Cool video. Everything about it reminds me of growing up in that era.
What was so genius about early pumpkins is the type of music that was popular in the late 80's was NOTHING like anything at that time nor ever. This music is timeless and will always sound good. BTW, i'm an independant music lover from an early age, and still think that siamese dream is the greatest alt rock album......................EVER!
It's really him singing and them in concert in Chicago, but we shot it on 16mm with no sound. We edited it later to a copy of the song the band gave us on cassette.
This is pretty cool. I would like to know more about this video. Where did you get the video clips from, did you shoot them yourself? How did you know of the band in 1989? Did you make this for school, or just for your own enjoyment?
whoa! i love it when stuff like this turns up. why did you make this video akkerwolf, was it for a personal project or did the band commission you to make it with the intent of promotional use? i like the billy/james slo-mo headbanging shots, haha.
I can't post the extra footage because it is on 16mm film and 1" video tape. Someday I will get it all converted. I thought the band was fine. James was the nicest. Billy was kinda jerk back then, but not to bad.
How did you get the audio for this video? I have never heard this recording of Rhinoceros, on any bootleg or official release including the second disc of bonus material on the reissue of Gish.
@@davesims7917 This was recorded at Reel Time studios in 1989 and was included on their "Moon" demo tape that was sold at early shows and used for bookings.
Okey. So this was as a school project for you guys? Was it ever showed like on a local channel or something? Where did this video eventually end up? Besides here on youtube, I mean. I like the early Pumpkins with songs such as "Snap", "My Eternity", "Spiteface", and oh, "Glynis" of course! So you must have seen them when they played at the Metro a couple of times, early on. I've got a version of "Rhinocerose" with an organ solo instead of the regular guitar solo. Think it's on "Reel Time Studios
It was so long ago I don't remember. Most of the music was from the first yet to be released album. Many of the songs like this one were different than the final version on the album.

Rhinoceros still remains in my top 5 Pumpkins songs...
Love it to death.
+Space Boy
Drown is right up there with it for me.
It’s the best
The band gave us a cassette of their album before it was released. When the album was released it sounded different. I never liked the album version as much as the songs on the cassette.
This is so amazing! I wonder if the band knows about this
do you still have those versions of the songs?
This SO perfectly captures the mood and feel and aesthetic beauty of that late 80s/early 90s alternative world.
So nostalgic watching this....jesus
dat bass
Bryce Thibodeaux is not just that. But it feels the bass became less prominent over time
Thanks for posting - Billy with hair....smile...
20 years later the Pumpkins still RAWK...
Love the color shots of her on the swing, really captures the feel of a winters afternoon in Chi Town. Great really captures the feel with the song
yes yes

Aaron Kerr
Holy cow you've had this video up 10 years already
Upload the album they gave you.
It's amazing how powerful they were musically even before being properly recorded.

@infoslinger All the drummer's I know make producers take all the reverb off a recording lol

Smashing Pumpkins fans would love to hear those songs. Thats a pretty rare cassette you have.
My favorite Gish song, and a wonderful version. Thanks so much for uploading this.

This is an amazing thing, Aaron. Thank you so much for making it and thank you again for sharing it here!
the bass is awesome in this song
Wow, TYSM for uploading this treasure for all of us! ☺
Yes it was a school project for a college lighting class.
It was never shown anywhere, not even sure if the band saw it. It's been a long time, I can't remember. :)
Amazing! Thanks for posting
Smashing Pumpkins 🎃 Forever 🧡
I come back to this every now again I like the cut off the bass track and vocals
Great job putting the video together!

thank you akerrwolf! for the video and the story behind it^^
This is so great and reminds me of everything of my middle school years.

Love this little jewel. Thanks!
Thank you very much..loved it..Great Song
Interesting version of this song, especially in comparison to the final studio version on Gish. I think I like the guitar solo better in this 1.
Wow, This is kinda historic! Awesome upload, thanks for sharing!!
It's the shots of Billy and James headbanging that got you the five star rating.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing
Love this song and damn good job by your friend on the vid...nice fades of the cam and great edits
Great video, thanks for posting it.
This is awesome.

Wow, thank you for finally sharing this!
Awesomeness
Have the Pumpkins ever seen this video? It really reminds me of the Rhinoceros video.
cool vid you get there...must bring back a lot of memories to you
wow and very nostalgic.
Billy with not just hair but long hair.
That's cool! That's really neat that you met them before they were big :)

@sigwart Siamese dream would also have to be my favourite too, Soma was the first song I learnt on guitar. so awsome.
awesome
this is awesome! thanks!
It's the Gish Demos that I believe HAVE been bootlegged and released. There's another great version of Rhinoceros with this crazy organ solo
Beautiful
Great job, this is awesome.
Luv this song and video SP are fuckin awesome. thanks for putting this on here Wicked Kool Cnt wait to see them 11/14 and 11/15 in Boston...

Nice! I love Rhinoceros.

It's really him singing and them in concert in Chicago, but we shot it on 16mm with no sound. We edited it later to a copy of the song the band gave us on cassette.
The footage I have is MOS (no audio) from the concert. This was back in the 16mm days. At some point I'll get the stuff converted to a digital format.
No better time than now!
Because I filmed it.
That's an amazing solo 3:18 - 3:42. Like a combination of Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
Groovy
How the fuck does someone write a song as awesome as this?
i like this version (the song), it's more 'shoegazing' in a way.. the album version is still best though,
nos bootlegs essa versao me levou alucura varias vzSSSSS
you recon that Billy Corgan was a fan of the telescopes (taste era)?
This is pretty cool. I would like to know more about this video. Where did you get the video clips from, did you shoot them yourself? How did you know of the band in 1989? Did you make this for school, or just for your own enjoyment?

The band gave us the audio. My friend Roger went to high school with James.
Aaron Kerr Do you know if this was recorded at that studio in Hoffman Estates?
@@davesims7917 I do not know

@@akerrwolf Aaron, do you still have this tape? And, would you consider selling it?
Very nice! Excellent choice of music too, I think I prefer this version. Did you meet the band or discuss anything with 'em?
Good Work!

Funny not hearing the tremolo in this version, I keep expecting it, having to remind myself this is an early version.
did anyone see the trees growing
where abouts were some of theses neighborhoods the girl was in? could be some of our old stomping grounds
The name of the song is rhinoceros
Is that girl connected with SP? I mean, there's only one... you-know-who.
No the young woman was a student at UWO. No connection the SP.
you recon that smashing pumpkin were into the telescopes (taste era)?
this is my fav pumpkins song ever. Which version is it?
What was the original song they were playing in the black and white footage?
It was so long ago I don't remember. Most of the music was from the first yet to be released album. Many of the songs like this one were different than the final version on the album.
You should upload this on their official website. i'm sure billy would be amused.
A Beautiful Song! They can Smash my Punkin any time!👍
@sigwart ROLLING STONE ranked it 400 something. LOL but I agree it is underappreciated
can someone tell me the name of this song please?
is there any way you could upload the unreleased version of the album?
Kinda looks like one of those random videos you make fun of as you sang karaoke.. Nothing personal.. Definite props though for seeing SP before they made it big!
thanks! you know the exact date of the footage? any posibility to see the rest of the register?

Long Live The Pumpkins!!!
Ironically, that's what the pumpkins turned into.
That's my favorite shot also. Funny part is I almost got hit by a car shooting it. :)
