  • Why has there been such a perceived opposition between the Catholic Church and the modern world? And what is "modernity"? This lecture traces the history of this relationship through the nineteenth century, looking at the pontificates of Pius IX and Leo XIII, and concludes with a discussion of Jacques Maritain's landmark work Integral Humanism (1936), which opens new avenues that lead to the Second Vatican Council.
