The tune at 1:53 and beyond played through my mind to help push me through OCS because I knew that song is the one they would play at our graduation. When I finally heard Navy Band play it at graduation I had chills down my spine that I'll never forget. It's amazing the impact music has on someone and how it can drive you. The song has an amazing power to it that is truly motivating to me to this day.

That so-called “trio section” that begins at at 1:54 is awesome. It’s actually played on its own when leaders, dignitaries, or even the color guard enters or exits important events.

Our High school band played this through a five mile parade. Better to play one song perfectly than five or more poorly. No music required it was automatic by then. We had about 130 band members for the big annual event. Six or seven Sousaphones in the back row.

@@savvyhowe1646 BOO! It's a great one for sure. I read up on its history - even though EE Bagley wrote it, it was one of Sousa's top 4 favorites. And Bagley tried to throw out the score after he had written it (didn't like the ending or some such nonsense). His band rescued it from the trash, unbeknownst to the composer, and surprised him by playing it at their next concert!

I just compared the US Air Force Band's version with this. Both are excellent. I prefer the Marine Band version by a small margin. It's a little tighter and cleaner. What the Marines handle especially well is the section beginning at 2:00 and repeating at around 2:34 -- the steady drumbeats and strong, dark tones, low rising to high, a touch menacing, as if to announce the arrival of a new imperial power on the world's stage. And then the return to a lighter, more exuberant mode. "We're pleasant, cheerful Americans, but we can be damned tough if we want to." It was composed in 1902, and maybe the nation was preening after the Spanish American War and the composer was joining in.
