‘I had this idea for ‘the court will rise’ chorus, so it became a free-form, impressionistic lyric that connected to justice, but there’s a sense of urgency there. A lot of life is a struggle between order and chaos and in some senses the justice or legal system is something that we impose to try and bring some element of order to the chaos. That’s often abused, it’s often unfair and discriminatory but at the same time it’s probably an essential part of a civilised society. But we do need to think sometimes about how that is actually realised and employed.’
Written and produced by Peter Gabriel, The Court was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London, and features contributions from Brian Eno alongside Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché, as well as backing vocals from Peter’s daughter Melanie Gabriel. The orchestral arrangement is by John Metcalfe with Peter Gabriel and was recorded at British Grove Studios in London with a number of players who previously featured in the New Blood Orchestra.

The song is partly inspired by the work of NAMATI whose mission is to provide people around the world access to justice they may not otherwise be able to afford. ‘I recommend you check them out,’ says Gabriel. ‘They do a brilliant job assembling teams around the world to help with different issues.’

This media era is so priceless...go back a decade, 2 decades, 3...people never had the opportunity to communicate their artistic process in this way. Their fans could only get their album, go to their performance, read a short magazine piece or see a short interview on television. Now u can sit here for free and go in depth with artist and what he wants to show and say. For people over 30 yrs old, it's so wild.

That’s actually an excellent point although most artists wouldn’t go into detail of the process that Peter does
You are very correct. There are 2 things happening. One is that you can more easily connect with and understand an artist like never before. At the same time we are seeing AI tools that can and will be creating music and other forms of art with minimal effort. That connection with the artist will be what people value even more as AI starts creating music, visual arts, etc.
Genesis did document the recording of their 1983 and 1991 albums, if not in depth, on a feature film length you can hear the songs take shape

I didn't realize how far away I've been from Peter Gabriel. I mean, I'm still in the world of the albums, Security, So and Us (I often play the Security album a LOT of times). I haven't kept up with him since. I knew he was into international sounds and exploration, which I love! But wow, this was so refreshing and a joy to feel reconnected. I look forward to catching up if you will, and learning about all I've been missing.
Peter's music got me through high school and beyond. I would play his music when driving to live in another State at night. I would daydream and disappear in the adventure in my mind. Peter's music helped me feel safe to do so.

So true for me also! I was telling a friend last night that his new album has rekindled my OBSESSION with his music, and reminded me of how important it was to me in my formative years. But with 21 years since his last full album of new songs (excluding soundtracks and OVO) he'd fallen out of my consciousness, replaced by artists like Steven Wilson, Marillion, and even Babymetal (yes!!!). But now listening over and over to the 11 tracks he's released from I/O, and seeing him live in both Seattle and Denver on this tour, it's all come back to me. I told that buddy last night that when I first got clean 36 years ago (alcohol & other drugs) I was encouraged to find a "higher power" that I could lean upon when recovery gets hard. Being an atheist that was a bit of a challenge, but then I decided that Peter Gabriel was my higher power. I'd COMPLETELY forgotten this but it reminds me of just how important PG's music and persona was to me when I was just a lad of 26, with a lot more hair than I do now. But now that he's firmly back in my Personal Pantheon, I only hope it's not too late, and he's prepared to follow through with all the music he was unable to provide us over the last 21 years. :)
P.S. - I'm firmly in the belief that this "next project" he kept referring to during the shows (in regards to Road To Joy and Olive Tree) is an extension of the MOZO concept/project. Now I beg of thee Peter, keep to your word and get that "next project" out to us sooner rather than later!!

I cannot believe it is fifty years and a couple of weeks since i saw Pete and Genesis for the first and only time but i have been hooked ever since and have followed the careers of every band member. What an absolute honor it was to see them live at the De Montfort hall in Leicester on a miserable February night. The fog was so thick we drove off the road twice and had to have one guy sit on the hood to give directions because i could not see shit, but it was worth it all . If any of those idiots are still alive today they may remember it but i doubt they lived this long .

The Universe has a strange way of giving us special messages. I have always loved the magical, inspirational lyrics, voice and music of Peter Gabriel. Now in my early 60's I go through phases of listening to my favourite artists for a few days at a time. A couple of weeks ago I was on a Peter Gabriel kick. Listening to Biko, Salsbury Hill, In Your Eyes, Don't Give Up etc. I spoke to my boyfriend about the brilliance, power, passion, conviction & beauty that Peter always manages to put together in his music. I explained how every lyric, note, instrument moves through every nerve and part of my brain and body. I am one of the lucky one's that can feel music. I kept questioning how Peter put his music together. To take a meaningful, important topic and create a musical classic. How does he do it?
Low and behold I found this channel and listened as he spoke of the complexities, and gave so many others credit for adding special qualities to his new song. Even a history lesson and what is in his minds eye! I am amazed and spellbound by the perfection and detail it takes for him to put a composition together. Thankyou Peter! You answered my questions and wonder of. Your amazing, meaningful music. I just wish I was much younger so I could've possibly produced such beauty for the World to hear and pay attention to. You have honoured so many and we are very blessed to hear you speak with such knowledge and love for humanity and our Earth. 💞🌟🫂🎶💖😍🌅⭐️🪶🙌🧚🏿♀️🌟🌠

It is with such hope that I feel this.... Again, my belly turns and is grateful for Peter's offering. Indeed, we are all "a little lost" with the devastation from the lack of justice. As I speak here in the US with such brutality as civilian against civilian gun brutality rages almost weekly.....YET, as NAMATI proposes...May we all takes steps for justice for ALL!
