    We have used our Trangia style burners inside parts from a stainless steel gasifier twig stove for many years. The upper parts from the twig stove make an excellent windscreen/pot stand and as you stated, you have the ability to collect and burn free wood. We have also used other alternative fuels from bulk gel alcohol, assorted fuel cubes, and sterno chafing dish refills that are inexpensive in SE Asia. The concept you have presented is proven. Your new combination will be a blessing to those committed to ultralight weight hiking adventures. No one ever needs to fear running out of fuel on the trail.

    If it fits use the cross bars under the burner inches stove to raise the burner height

    FYI .... Did you know if you put a pinch of salt in to the fuel for your cooker you will see a yellow flame. So you can see it is lit.

    On Amazon there are Lixada stoves. They are small foldable stainless steel wood stoves that fit in a small carry pouch. There is a plate that you can insert that has a hole that your trangia stove will fit into. Plus being in the stove gives you a small wind screen. I have had mine for years and it is convenient to use wood or alcohol with the same stove. Amazon has them for $25 and I think you will like it way better than the Hex stove. I hope this helps and I am sure you will be glad that you checked this out. I enjoy your videos and wish you best of luck in the future.

    I've been using my Trangia and Esbit clones with the Esbit Triangle stand. It keeps the stove off the ground so it can heat up quicker and better in cold weather and snow. It provides a partial windscreen, but I still add big chunk of heavy foil like you do on your standard Trangia setup. The wind screen keeps all the heat tight around the pot and conserves a lot of fuel.
    The Esbit Triangle stand also has a little round plate that you can insert in place of a Trangia and provides a platform for the hexamine solid fuel tablets. You could also make your own fuel cubes using wax and cotton. That way, I can go with a quick fuel cube just to heat up a cup of tea.
    The triangle stand packs flat and thin.
    I also have a Lixada folding/hinged wood stove that accomodates a Trangia spirit burner or hexamine tablets for a 3 fuel option.

    The Firebox Freestyle can be used for that and as a gas stove and other wood configurations, especially with a second one

    For best efficiency, you want about 1.75 inches between the top of the alcohol stove and the bottom of your pot, so you may want to add a spacer to move the stove up a little.

    I do this with a small lixada titanium wood stove. It has a Trangia holder plate and in the stove, the pot stand will fit insice, even with the top. A great combo. I put the stove in the bottom of the wood stove, and set a soup can directly in top for a low heat "simmer" almost none of the lable burned and it came up to heat slowly and nicely

      I guess most of us use kinda the same kit for the same purpose. Depending of the time of year and fire hazards I use a titanium box twig burning style with yes the alcohol burner. But if I go to the highlands or in winter I use a very old Svea choe-choe stove in naphtha not the most I would say reliable beast but she fits just wonderfully in a titanium solo just like the old Colman did in a tobacco tin. We in the end are the same. Just hopefully stop poisoning ourselves with the old metals we used to use.

    Prefer the Trangia or new Pathfinder stove but they all work. The Vargo makes good windscreen, just got to be careful opening that door to keep the stove from disassembling.

    A few points that need to be mentioned here,
    1)titanium alcohol burners (alluminium as well) have a massive disadvantage in bloom speed and fuel consumption against the Trangia in cold weather.
    2)the design of that burner without a snuffer or simmer ring is a massive disadvantage.
    3)if you bring the burner to within 1-1.25" of the bottom of the pot it will boil a lot faster.
    4)there are a few wood burning stoves designed to also take the Trangia and solid fuel tabs that are a much better design than the Vargo.
    Still a good concept.

    This is a copy of the Evernew. Lixada does a version which includes a snuffer. You can invert the stove into the snuffer to reclaim any unused fuel and pour it back into the bottle. 👍

    I have been using the wood stove / Trangia combo for about 15 years. Why? It works. As far as the Kuvik stove replacing Trangia, without a lid or simmer ring, it sounds like two steps back and no steps forward. And wow, my Trangia does 1000 ml in 5 minutes using 1 oz of alcohol. Perhaps your alcohol has a larger water content?

    If your new stove had a sealed cap it would be near-perfect; maybe they'll do an improved version with that. This has been my trick in principle for a long time, but being poor has meant using other components and no Ti gear. A twig stove or hobo stove isn't what you want most when you're tired or out in a heavy rain but used like this it follows the "at least two purposes" rule and even though the pot is higher above the flames, you aren't losing any heat escaping to the sides so it's still efficient.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 4 місяці тому +1

    One of my main reasons for going with a Trangia or Esbit clone spirit burner is the ability to cook at different power levels using the simmer ring. I've gone keto, so boiling up a pot of noodles is not happening ever. In fact, most all boiled meals are off menu. I boil water for tea. The rest is more like cooking some steak, eggs, spam or corned beef. So having no simmer ring makes it useless to me. If it's just boiling water, the penny stove and related builds are clearly more efficient and cheaper. For just boiling, I especially like the vienna sausage can with 2 staggered rows of 5-6mm holes up at the top, since it starts really fast and doesn't need a pot stand. If you add 1/2" spacer points, it will burn isopropyl alcohol cleanly.

    The Swedish army mess kit allows the same functionality and then some by adding the simmer control capability. Admittedly it is not quite as lightweight but fulfills the same functionality. I guess the primary question would be around weight. Your system is all titanium with some limitations (functionality) versus greater options with greater weight (and functionality) ofthe aluminium of Swedish army trangia based stove which can also be used as a twig stove. I’m interested in your perspective.

    Looks like a copy of the Evernew Ti stove. In general, the Trangia out performs the Evernew, but if you're counting grams, then it may be a good choice. The cross brace pot supports are convenient but put the pot way too close for efficiency. The Vargo wood stove does the opposite, holding the pot a bit too high for an alcohol burner. The sweet spot is usually around 1" between stove and pot. Shouldn't be too hard to find something to put under the burner to lift it a bit. Have had my eye on the Vargo Hex for a long time.

    • @ThePreparedWanderer

      I think putting the included cross bars under the stove would raise it enough

  • @bjbackitis
    @bjbackitis 4 місяці тому +1

    I see Vargo sells an alcohol burner to go with that hex stove, it definitely raises it up higher. I think something below the trangia to raise it up to get to that magic sweet spot below the pot would fix the issue.

    • @ThePreparedWanderer
      @ThePreparedWanderer  4 місяці тому +1

      @@ThePreparedWanderer I was just responding to the issue raised by another commentor, but I agree that it seemed to work quite nicely as is. I have a different wood stove that I do this same sort of thing so I know the concept is sound; that hex stove is far more compact (and lighter) than my Canway stainless steel gasifier stove I use. The alcohol burner you showed is also quite intriguing, although the lack of a sealed cap is a potential issue. It's another great video, as I've come to expect from your postings, and much appreciated!

      @@RonOrud Yes, looking at it on Amazon it didn't impress me much except for how it hung from the top rather than sitting on the bottom. But the burner design itself looked marginal... thanks for confirming my suspicions on it!
