Helen Mirren can do no wrong - even now, 20 years after this film, she is still stunning. She is one of Britain's finest actors.
I don't think I have seen a single movie where Mirren's role isn't outstanding. One of the finest actors to ever live.
Tennessee Wms stories are the most dramatic and riveting they really explore the depths of human passion. Helen Mirran was terrific in this and beautiful as well. could not stop watching!

The role of her life. Bravo Helen! She is great, the movie is geat. My favourite movie for now. Tennessee was really fantastic. Must read it. It is all already written and filmed, all our lives are already written and filmed.
Helen Mirren
and
Anne Bancroft....both excellent actresses! What an absolute gem! This movie is definitely worth watching....more than just once.
Helen Mirren was perfect as Mrs. Stone who felt old, untalented, and lonesome for companionship. A sad story showing how others can take advantage of older women pretending to flatter and to genuinely care for them. Excellent acting by all, nice scenes of Rome, and music throughout. When you find real love cherish it.
@@nicolarollinson4381 yeah I don't think that was the case at all. Karen Stone was not stupid and she could see through all of these male suitors. Why she chose to have an affair with the latest one is a mystery and also when I clicked the movie off in disgust... well, after what's his name disrobed in front of her hoping to make her want him. How ridiculous.
@@desertodavid I agree with you - Karen Stone was not stupid. However, I disagree with you about the choices she made. When her husband was alive she was adored by him. More likely she missed that feeling... So, when that young handsome Italian aristocrat came to her bedroom and was very tender with her, she liked it a lot. And day by day was getting addicted for his company and lovemaking. Many girls/women feel that way. No common sense here... And after being humiliated by her aristocratic lover, she chose the poor, homeless younger Italian who tried hard to seduce her sexually. Because he would never behave the way her titled lover did. And he would never leave her. But the ending meant that the aristocrat predicted her future. I bet he would kill her if it was based on a true story. Because he hated her and learning about her getting a younger handsome Italian would drive him over the edge...
@@sweetvictory5643 that tramp was a twisted pervert. Who deliberately stands next to a woman and urinates ? you dont seduce a woman by disgusting her. He is going to rape her, kill her and steal what he can. And paolo has torn her down so much, and made her feel like disposable garbage, that that is all she thinks she deserves.
Thank your very much for the upload. The movie was full of metaphors… like the setting, Rome, she lost her Empire during the war, the main character (Mrs Stone) had lost her dignity when her husband died… the social ills, hypocrisy masked by the materialistic world. And the cast, each played well his/her character. Bravo!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The magnitude of Tennesse Williams, met two magnificent Actress: Ellen Mirren and Anne Bancroft. This teatrical piece is well acting, so sad and reflect totally the tormented soul of❤❤❤ Tennesse Williams. In some of the final scenes, Ellen Mirren remind me as Gloria Swanson in

Tennessee Williams never disappoints! A great novella and a great film. And Helen Mirren is one of the finest actresses ever Absolutely love her.
No amount of social engineering can alter the fact that polished gems like Helen Mirren possess countless attributes that women of every age can't help but envy.
@@maryhalverson5713 sorry couldn’t agree with you there! She’s magnificent and we all love her for it. Don’t see how ‘envy’ gets in here!

Watch the expressions of those around her when she enters a room. She has the same ageless glory that only a precious few have. Tina Turner, Sean Connery, Denzel, Susan Sarandon are among a handful who spring to mind. They inspire a complimentary form of envy that's completely natural to have in the presence of such greatness.
I'm pretty sure I saw a documentary that said Tenessee Williams battled for years to make this book a success, it was a flop the first time published, took 20 yrs.
Helen Mirren is one of my favorite actresses she is so talented. I love watching her on film, This film was very good and she was wonderful as Mrs., Stone, Her costumes in this film were just beautiful.
Incredible cast. Mirren, Bancroft, Martinez and Santoro plus Brian Dennehy. This classic screen adaptation of one of Tennessee William's finest works is hauntingly beautiful.
Helen Mirren is always brilliant in any picture she starred in, her performance is always breathtaking.🥰
Such a great movie in everyway possible, this is my second time around watching it, all actors are fantastic & played their parts so well. A very lonely & lost woman who needed love & understanding after her husband died, she was sent her lover/s found companionship, happiness, love, fights, humiliation, & heartache all rolled into one.
You forgot acceptance that this is what life will be like for a little while until she gets over her husband's death. She just wants to be loved and that Guy will definitely make her feel loved unlike the Male whore the Madame set her up with. He's being passed around and doesn't even realize he's aging. He's got a good 6yrs of that mess left.
I have seen this movie for the first time. It has deeply touched me, especially the end. I assume the young homeless man had been one of those young men used to charm wealthy ladies and he knew exactly what was going on behind closed doors. So in the end, he brought Mrs. Stone what she mostly needed and desired: to end her life which, for her, had no meaning any more since the moment in which she discovered that the love she needed so much was only an illusion. A deep insight into a society which only appraises the young and beautiful, the golden calf of vanity, ignoring the value of age and wisdom.
In addition to my first comment on this remarkable movie, I want to add this: I wonder whether anyone has noticed that Mrs. Stones marriage had been, in a physical way, unfulfilled. Yet, she loved her husband deeply, and he loved and protected her until his death. There is a scene revealing this issue, yet nobody has ever mentioned it, although, in my opinion, it has a lot to do with her longing for love after the loss of her husband. A love she had not experienced in her marriage.
The homeless man was a pervert. Look at the scene again, where you find him next to the door, after that Mrs. Stone shouted for help.
@@TheVafa95 Yes, of course he was, and probably also mentally disturbed. However, it is not clear whether he had always been like that, or if something had happened to him. What is clear is that he was the one predicted to put an end to her life., and she knew it.
@@42kellys She killed herself, as we saw her taking sleeping pills and drinking alcohol. The homeless guy was there to show without a moral compass how degenerate we can get.
Surprised this movie did not win award. So beautifully written and executed. Helen Mirren at her finest - figure of class, elegance and wit. Everyone was so well casted.
It's a Very cheap remake of the 1961 classic film with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty. Olivier Martinez not at all convincing as the Latin lover and the gay Tennessee Williams character is utterly redundant (in the novella and original film it was Karen Stone’s journalist lady friend). Only Anne Bancroft is worthy of mention here; but still Lotte Lenya as La Contessa was superb in the 1961 original and should have won the Oscar.
I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS VERY WATCHABLE - HELEN MIRREN - OUTSTANDING - ANNE BANCROFT - FABULOUS - OLIVIER MARTINEZ - VERY CHARISMATIC!!!!!
Oh, this is just great. I've got the old movie version with Warren Beatty and it is great but this televisión adaptation with the "flawless" Helen Mirren looks great as well. Thanks so much for uploading this film
Tennessee Williams is an icon and a master. Though his works lend themselves to a level of a deep soul depression and human poverty. They are often difficult to watch. The entire cast was fabulous but I have a special thing for Brian ❤😢
l, too, love brian dennehy..! soo Handsome. and Tennessee Williams drank alot..!!
This actress is absolutely gorgeous. I enjoy this heartbreaking story just because of her.
This film strikes me as a metaphor. It was more about this last guy and his passion for Helen, and with his dedication, he eventually achieved what he desired. The keys to the door were tossed at him. He made his desires a reality. ❤
@@user-rs1vr8rp5h why do you think that? I watched the movie years ago and can’t remember. But I think he was a mental case.

Yes, a lot of people just don't get the ending. The boy in the street is desperate, hungry, and envious of Paolo's financial success with Mrs. Stone. He also believes that he also has what Mrs. Stone needs. When Paolo moves out, which is the moment the street boy has been waiting for, he seizes his chance, and Mrs. Stone, throws him the keys to her apartment. He then takes Paolo's place.

Loneliness is a very powerful physical and mental force that will become, along with heart issues and cancer another "disease" of the XXI Century. In this movie, Helen Mirren's role portrays the superficial, ephemeral and transitory world of entertainment, and a society where beauty and youth are objects of desire while experience and maturity are easily discarded, regardless of what they have to offer. This story is as old as the Story of the World - power will always overwhelm the powerless, and Mrs. Stone, an elegant and lonely woman, finds it and intends to use it, just like she was used. Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft are superb in their interpretation.
I love this film! She had made a statement about the eyes and when she looked into the homeless man’s eyes she knew he desired her deeply.

I watched that movie fifteen years ago and I'm glad I watched it again. It seems to me, that some scenes are missing here, which I remembered very well. The scene on the terrace and half-naked Helen under the fluttering curtains. An extremely effective scene showing Mrs. Stone in her full, mature physical beauty.

Beautiful outfits and interiors. People wore amazing clothes back then. So classy!
Helen Mirren was fantastic in this role, she is alway great. The movie makes you think, we all become older and more lonely, before everyone likes you for your looks, when that is gone, your value is your money. I was a very famous model, now I’m old, so I felt the message, even you know it. Paying someone directly or indirectly would make me depressed, I prefer to be unhappy by myself than with someone I pay. What I liked in this movie was the elegance dresses and I think dressing you up helps your ego, as long you do it for yourself. When I look back in my life, all my partners was much older than me, I lernt from them and they was happy to have a good looking, younger partner for free.
Great movie!!!

I have not seen the original movie with Vivien Leigh in the role of Mrs Stone. However, the performances given here by Helen Mirren and Ann Bancroft were superb. I was only vaguely familiar with the story. I had no idea of the ending. It was truly tragic especially the last 3 minutes of the movie. What a moral social and psychological descent. I found it disturbing.
Well, that's Tennessee Williams for you.
Thank you for this video.
l met Tennessee Williams decades ago in Key West, FL.. it was the very early 8Os.. he was soooo intoxicated..
@@BEAUTYnIQ Thank you for your response. Yes, I know he was an alcoholic, among other things, but I won't go there. I think his upbringing was very difficult. However regardless of his addictions and sexual preferences, the man was a brilliant writer. I think he would have been a fascinating guest at a dinner table. I would have loved to have spent a couple of hours talking to him. Cheers.
@@andrewmiller4885 Regardless of his 'sexual preferences'? Homophobic are you? Williams was gay. Williams IS 'Mrs. Stone'. He is writing about himself. He wrote about himself in all of his leading female characters because it was the only 'acceptable' way he could write about a man who loved men. Apparently, to some, it is still. 'Regardless'.
@@JamesBrown-ij1px
stop attacking . no one said anything 'homophobic'.. you seem to be looking for a fight.
how insecure.
Key West had more gay-to-straight ratios of men, than even the 'gay capital ' of san francisco at that time, and for many, many decades.. l knew gay friends that werent just your bartender or hairdresser.. they were your bank teller, asphalt paver, or RE agent.. all of this during the nascence of the scarey AIDS period.. when it started rampantly spreading..
also @andrewmiller4885 said nothing wrong either, and the way you singled him out was vastly prejudiced. you owe him an apology..
I'm sorry you have misunderstood me. I say regardless of his addictions and sexual preferences because a lot of people still find those two things damning. that's why I used the word "regardless" in other words they are of no regard to me. Society still isn't as tolerant and as embracing as we have been led to believe on the whole LGBT issue. It makes no difference to me whatsoever whether a man is gay, a woman is lesbian, whether they are bisexual or trans gender. WE live in a complicated world and people are all different. SO, "regardless" of who they are and what their personal lives are about is unimportant. I look for content of character. Tennessee Williams was a sensitive man, a very nice man. I can't say the same for his horrid father, a loud, hard drinking, abusive and vulgar man. Briefly talking about a famous man's history does not make one homophobic. Referencing someone's sexual orientation does not make one homophobic either. I have worked with gay people and one of them became a good and dear friend. .... He still is. What I was trying to say was it doesn't matter what goes on in your personal life.
Are you loyal, are you honest, are you humble, are you caring, kind and giving where you can? According to biographies I have read, Tennessee Willaims was all those things and more. He was also one hell of a talented playwright whose work I have always admired. Geez I'm sorry if you were offended in some way man.
Oh, and by the way a homophobic would never want to sit at a dinner table and spend a few hours talking to a gay man. Believe me, I have a few homophobic friends, they would decline an invitation like that, and retreat in horror, but I don't judge them either. Cheers mate you have a good day.
Tennessee Williams sure had some incredible psychological insight into some female psyches. I also think that first scene with her husband when they first get to Rome, and his health is deteriorating and he's apologizing and she says if she wanted to live like an animal, she would have. I believe she loved her husband very much.....and was lost when he died. Love Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft, and the other actors, too. And great musical score. And love your channel. "Drifting......."
Yes it was sad. She was lost losing her Husband. I would have been lost losing that big Teddy Bear "Brian Dennehey also. I've never seen this before. Now in the comments thanks movie buffs, I am remembering the one with Vivien Leigh.
Hi, ı'm Napoleon Bonapart and just watched a nice dramatic theater play adabtation, thank you so much for this free movie, no dancin' but fishing no smoking but Rock 'N' roll, this play is an image taken from the real life that is trying to depict the weakness of some real life charachters against the irresistible charm of money and power, of course all those problems are caused by the capitalist economy system by the way, their passions, greed and sordidity lead a lot of conflicts in their private lives and finally the old lady figures that wisdom is not something for sale. Helen Miren is a pretty sweet and innocent lady, she's still so young in my personal opinion because she's a free spirit lady, her souls will stay young forever ı guess,ı really love her so much, sincerely from the bottom of my heart.
This film is a depiction of love and lost.knowing when something is'nt right but still doing it anyway, she knew that he was fooling her but she wanted to feel loved at any cost, but letting the homeless man in, is probably the best thing that could happen to her
I do not think he is juzt a street man...I think she lets in a young Who has been used and discarded as she was. He had probably worked as an escort before, and fell in disgrace!

Thanks for the upload and based on the reviews I'm excited to watch this movie 🤗
Tennessee Williams always hung up on age. He thought he understood women, but he always underestimated us. In reality we don't prefer death to living with a loss of beauty, we evolve into something more.
He's writing about a different time just after the war ended. And nobody understood women more than he did. Uncomfortable isn't it? And death's got nothing to do with this story. The street boy is not coming to kill Mrs. Stone - he's going to replace Paolo.
I'm guessing that Mrs. Stone is really a fill in for Tennesse himself and some infatuation with a younger man. I agree: with age, we can evolve into something more.
@@jochenstossberg5427I think they needed each other. Neither herself nor him were falsetto, was my take. She had a real life but after her husband's death she was playing a role to survive, a tragic role she wrote for herself. She retreated into the actress part of her life. She didn't seek love nor chase it because she still loved her husband & always would. They were soul mates & no one could take his place in her heart. However she sought companionship, but not necessarily love. She knew what those people were about in a short moment having been in the theatre she could recognize acting when she saw it. Her good friend warned her about the countess early on plus she was intelligent. Perhaps in the middle she was hoping he..her lover would cease to be playing a part...that he would be real & he approached that but withdrew. However had he ceased acting, then she could maybe find room in her heart for real affection for him. I think she even wanted him to do so she could really help him. However in the end he yielded to his bitterness at the loss of his former aristocratic life, like the countess who was bitter thru & thru, devoured from the inside out with vengeful regrets.
The boy who followed her understood I believe the game being played. The script mystified himself, as perhaps a creep or pervert but when she confronted him he cringed fearfully, almost like a child. That didn't seem dangerous to me, but rather pitiful. I think he sensed her need & knew his own to be real. The pressures of life weighing down hard on them both in different ways, circumstances that either of them had no way of changing.
The movie had twist & turns to keep from the audience from guessing what next.
I think at the end the two remaining, each had something to offer the other which was desperately missing. I think perhaps they could rescue each other from a grim fate. Build a relationship on mutual, authentic need & be grateful in goodness to each other lifting the other from despair.
Anyway, it was ended in such a way each person could decide for themselves how the story finished, I think that's referred to as a cliff hanger. It kept me on edge for sure, excellent portrayal how unexpectedly life can maneuver us to go in directions never thought possible. Tennessee Williams had a flare for writing stories that drew out intense sentiments from his audience. He kept them entertained & challenged imaginatively.
@katella Yes, love that comment. There is also still beauty but it's a different kind of beauty IMO.

The no name strange man has passion for her since the first sight. The ending is that she realized he was the right one for her and finally accepted him. I love the last part of movie, especially while their eyes contacting, it’s the most beautiful moment, it’s very touching!
But he is a killer, came to kill her. You did not understand, he is not fun of her.
It was an illusion, not love. She felt she had nothing left to live for and invited him in to kill her willingly. She smiled at the invitation of death, not a lover.
Happy end is not possible because of the enormous contrast between their social backgrounds. It's not the 2000s.
I agree the poor homeless guy became her next lover. The physical sexual attraction for younger men who needed financial support fulfilled her her sexual needs. She called her addiction. Her late husband had a illness that prevented him from fulfilling her sexual needs, probably impotent, low libido... he admitted this defect when he apologized to her. And Rome obviously had a good supply of young handsome males with huge libidos and hunger pains... so if she was accepting death, then whateva blissful glow shone on her face, I believe death by vaginal orgasm does exist, and by the look on her face, it does... 😊😅❤
Wow ..Great cast ..and that Beautiful haunting face of the street Man small but Massive part ..Love Helen and Ann ...wooo weeee
This was a powerful movie. Many may be able to relate it to real life in more than one way...there are those who may have all the things tp survive & live a comfortable life, yet they're missing/yearning to be genuinely loved romantically or friendly love of a brethren or sistren. In another light there are ppl who look & smile wt you, yet deep inside they envy you or even hate you for the things you have or have been blessed wt. You may have a genuine heart to give/ share wt ppl.....but the moment you don't (for whatever reason) you are the worst person in the world to them...a mentality that alludes to their true nature. My advice. Seek & remember the Word of God "do not become weary of doing good". Take a time out to clear your mind, to just be still & connect wt God....then you go again. Very important is NOT to become like those ppl.
I can truly relate because I am one of the many you are referring to. And that hurts.

You could be alone but not lonely. As humans, some people yearn for compionship, no matter if they know that the other person is using them. They lose their sense of pride and dignity. Guess the other person gives them an illusion of happiness. An individual has to know their worth, and loneliness could bring you down to the gutter, because you could fill yourself with anything and accept anything, even commit suicide. You give life meaning and always remember you are beautiful. Things have a way of working out, be patient, and be happy in the now.
So proud of you, Rodrigo!

Tennessee Williams' novel along with his plays always provided memorable performances and intriguing plots. The 1961 film directed by the talented Jose Quintero enabled Vivian Leigh to give a luminous performance and allowed a young, handsome Warren Beatty to establish his international cinematic career (a far cry from TV's Dobie Gillis). Lotte Lenya's Brechtian training enables her to give a virtuoso performance that allows Leigh to bare her soul and every emotion. Mirren is good, but she's not Leigh whose pain, pathos and fragility have never been matched.
@@jayneterry8701 It might be available on UA-cam or a streaming service. It's shown every now and then on TCM. Vivian Leigh's performances are indelibly etched on the minds & hearts of those -- like me -- who have seen her numerous films. Waterloo Bridge & A Streetcar Named Desire showcase two of her greatest, poignantly painful performances full of heartbreak, despair and pathos.
Yes Vivien Leigh was suberb. She had the vulnerability and stillness which Mirren couldnt match. Leigh was of course, like Mirren a consument Shakespearean actress but Leigh because of her life experience subjectified and carried off the role with ease.
Yes, Vivien Leigh nailed the touching vulnerability of the character - but this more explicit version makes the arc of the story clearer. The street boy's not planning to kill Mrs Stone. He's going to be the next in line to benefit from her generosity. I really like this lush more cinematic version of the story - but Helen Mirrin vulnerable? No.
I did see that, I recalled it at your description. Have to say I like them both, but often times the first takes a special place. Strikes the deepest chords of sympathy in ourselves. 👍

I believe Pualo actually was in love with Karen but didn't want to admit that to her!
Very Great Movie! Thank You.❤
Tremenda película! yo sé que Tenesse Williams es grande pero no sabía de esta pelicula, que terrible que no la haya conocido antes, es de lo mejor que he visto este año... y sí, yo sé que no es del 2023
I think this casting is actually better than that I'm the original movie, because Helen Mirren can be whatever class she chooses, constantly remains sexy, and has incredible inner strength. What was unbearable about watching Vivien Leigh was that she was in reality very mentally fragile, had been unbelievably beautiful when young, and when comments hurt her you shuddered. It was heartbreaking to see.
An emotionally exhausting movie...does not sugarcoat relationships...and shows the many types of hunger we experience. And how the need for acknowledgement is exploited. Helen Mirren is timeless.
Heli, love your analysis..won't read any others😊, thanks 👍
