Helen Mirren was perfect as Mrs. Stone who felt old, untalented, and lonesome for companionship. @@desertodavid I agree with you - Karen Stone was not stupid. However, I disagree with you about the choices she made. When her husband was alive she was adored by him. More likely she missed that feeling... So, when that young handsome Italian aristocrat came to her bedroom and was very tender with her, she liked it a lot. And day by day was getting addicted for his company and lovemaking. Many girls/women feel that way. No common sense here... And after being humiliated by her aristocratic lover, she chose the poor, homeless younger Italian who tried hard to seduce her sexually. Because he would never behave the way her titled lover did. And he would never leave her. But the ending meant that the aristocrat predicted her future. I bet he would kill her if it was based on a true story. Because he hated her and learning about her getting a younger handsome Italian would drive him over the edge...

I have seen this movie for the first time. It has deeply touched me, especially the end. I assume the young homeless man had been one of those young men used to charm wealthy ladies and he knew exactly what was going on behind closed doors. So in the end, he brought Mrs. Stone what she mostly needed and desired: to end her life which, for her, had no meaning any more since the moment in which she discovered that the love she needed so much was only an illusion. A deep insight into a society which only appraises the young and beautiful, the golden calf of vanity, ignoring the value of age and wisdom.
In addition to my first comment on this remarkable movie, I want to add this: I wonder whether anyone has noticed that Mrs. Stones marriage had been, in a physical way, unfulfilled. Yet, she loved her husband deeply, and he loved and protected her until his death. There is a scene revealing this issue, yet nobody has ever mentioned it, although, in my opinion, it has a lot to do with her longing for love after the loss of her husband. A love she had not experienced in her marriage.

Olivier Martinez not at all convincing as the Latin lover and the gay Tennessee Williams character is utterly redundant (in the novella and original film it was Karen Stone’s journalist lady friend). Loneliness is a very powerful physical and mental force that will become, along with heart issues and cancer another "disease" of the XXI Century. In this movie, Helen Mirren's role portrays the superficial, ephemeral and transitory world of entertainment, and a society where beauty and youth are objects of desire while experience and maturity are easily discarded, regardless of what they have to offer. This story is as old as the Story of the World - power will always overwhelm the powerless, and Mrs. Stone, an elegant and lonely woman, finds it and intends to use it, just like she was used. Helen Mirren and Anne Bancroft are superb in their interpretation.

Helen Mirren was fantastic in this role, she is alway great. The movie makes you think, we all become older and more lonely, before everyone likes you for your looks, when that is gone, your value is your money. I was a very famous model, now I’m old, so I felt the message, even you know it. Paying someone directly or indirectly would make me depressed, I prefer to be unhappy by myself than with someone I pay. What I liked in this movie was the elegance dresses and I think dressing you up helps your ego, as long you do it for yourself. When I look back in my life, all my partners was much older than me, I lernt from them and they was happy to have a good looking, younger partner for free.
    Great movie!!!

I'm sorry you have misunderstood me. I say regardless of his addictions and sexual preferences because a lot of people still find those two things damning. that's why I used the word "regardless" in other words they are of no regard to me. Society still isn't as tolerant and as embracing as we have been led to believe on the whole LGBT issue. It makes no difference to me whatsoever whether a man is gay, a woman is lesbian, whether they are bisexual or trans gender. WE live in a complicated world and people are all different. SO, "regardless" of who they are and what their personal lives are about is unimportant. I look for content of character. Tennessee Williams was a sensitive man, a very nice man. I can't say the same for his horrid father, a loud, hard drinking, abusive and vulgar man. Briefly talking about a famous man's history does not make one homophobic. Referencing someone's sexual orientation does not make one homophobic either. I have worked with gay people and one of them became a good and dear friend. .... He still is. What I was trying to say was it doesn't matter what goes on in your personal life.
Are you loyal, are you honest, are you humble, are you caring, kind and giving where you can? According to biographies I have read, Tennessee Willaims was all those things and more. He was also one hell of a talented playwright whose work I have always admired. Geez I'm sorry if you were offended in some way man.
Oh, and by the way a homophobic would never want to sit at a dinner table and spend a few hours talking to a gay man. Believe me, I have a few homophobic friends, they would decline an invitation like that, and retreat in horror, but I don't judge them either. Cheers mate you have a good day.

I also think that first scene with her husband when they first get to Rome, and his health is deteriorating and he's apologizing and she says if she wanted to live like an animal, she would have. Helen Miren is a pretty sweet and innocent lady, she's still so young in my personal opinion because she's a free spirit lady, her souls will stay young forever ı guess,ı really love her so much, sincerely from the bottom of my heart.

@@jochenstossberg5427I think they needed each other. Neither herself nor him were falsetto, was my take. She had a real life but after her husband's death she was playing a role to survive, a tragic role she wrote for herself. She retreated into the actress part of her life. She didn't seek love nor chase it because she still loved her husband & always would. They were soul mates & no one could take his place in her heart. However she sought companionship, but not necessarily love. She knew what those people were about in a short moment having been in the theatre she could recognize acting when she saw it. Her good friend warned her about the countess early on plus she was intelligent. Perhaps in the middle she was hoping he..her lover would cease to be playing a part...that he would be real & he approached that but withdrew. However had he ceased acting, then she could maybe find room in her heart for real affection for him. I think she even wanted him to do so she could really help him. However in the end he yielded to his bitterness at the loss of his former aristocratic life, like the countess who was bitter thru & thru, devoured from the inside out with vengeful regrets.
The boy who followed her understood I believe the game being played. The script mystified himself, as perhaps a creep or pervert but when she confronted him he cringed fearfully, almost like a child. That didn't seem dangerous to me, but rather pitiful. I think he sensed her need & knew his own to be real. The pressures of life weighing down hard on them both in different ways, circumstances that either of them had no way of changing.
The movie had twist & turns to keep from the audience from guessing what next.
I think at the end the two remaining, each had something to offer the other which was desperately missing. I think perhaps they could rescue each other from a grim fate. Build a relationship on mutual, authentic need & be grateful in goodness to each other lifting the other from despair.
Anyway, it was ended in such a way each person could decide for themselves how the story finished, I think that's referred to as a cliff hanger. It kept me on edge for sure, excellent portrayal how unexpectedly life can maneuver us to go in directions never thought possible. Tennessee Williams had a flare for writing stories that drew out intense sentiments from his audience. He kept them entertained & challenged imaginatively.

This was a powerful movie. Many may be able to relate it to real life in more than one way...there are those who may have all the things tp survive & live a comfortable life, yet they're missing/yearning to be genuinely loved romantically or friendly love of a brethren or sistren. In another light there are ppl who look & smile wt you, yet deep inside they envy you or even hate you for the things you have or have been blessed wt. You may have a genuine heart to give/ share wt ppl.....but the moment you don't (for whatever reason) you are the worst person in the world to them...a mentality that alludes to their true nature. My advice. Seek & remember the Word of God "do not become weary of doing good". Take a time out to clear your mind, to just be still & connect wt God....then you go again. Very important is NOT to become like those ppl.

Guess the other person gives them an illusion of happiness. An individual has to know their worth, and loneliness could bring you down to the gutter, because you could fill yourself with anything and accept anything, even commit suicide. You give life meaning and always remember you are beautiful. Things have a way of working out, be patient, and be happy in the now.

Tennessee Williams' novel along with his plays always provided memorable performances and intriguing plots. The 1961 film directed by the talented Jose Quintero enabled Vivian Leigh to give a luminous performance and allowed a young, handsome Warren Beatty to establish his international cinematic career (a far cry from TV's Dobie Gillis). Lotte Lenya's Brechtian training enables her to give a virtuoso performance that allows Leigh to bare her soul and every emotion. Mirren is good, but she's not Leigh whose pain, pathos and fragility have never been matched.

heheh I am 55 and normally my partners are way younger. Times change and society too. This story is old fashioned although it is always a pleasure to see Helen and beautiful Olivier.

I think this casting is actually better than that I'm the original movie, because Helen Mirren can be whatever class she chooses, constantly remains sexy, and has incredible inner strength. What was unbearable about watching Vivien Leigh was that she was in reality very mentally fragile, had been unbelievably beautiful when young, and when comments hurt her you shuddered. It was heartbreaking to see.
