You Don't Know What A Single Thing Is.

  • The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said that we exist within nothing but Language Games.
In our attempt to know any object, we can only create descriptions.
Scientific descriptions. Spiritual descriptions. Political descriptions, etc..
These descriptions create their own rules and logic contained within themselves.
    Like games.
The rules & logic of the scientific language game are very different from the rules & logic of the spiritual language game.
When one language game makes claims to be superior to another language game to know really What Is - there can only be contradiction and conflict.
Naturally … the rules & logic of the games are different.
No language games can reveal to us what a single thing IS.
The French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, pointed out a very similar idea.
Derrida said that no word is ever identical to its referent. Meaning that no word reveals what anything IS.
Instead, the meaning of the word is created in its difference from other words.
The word “dog” does not have meaning because it tells us what a “dog” IS but rather the word “dog” has meaning only because it is different from the word “cat” - and, of course, millions of other words.
Derrida said we can see this very clearly when we try to define any word.
Just for a moment try to define where you are.
You might start with your city. Where is that?
You might say my city is in my country. The Planet. The Solar System. The Universe.
Pretty soon you run out of referents!
In Thailand the cultural ideal or superior character to demonstrate in public is a person with very deep “Jai Dee” - that is a person who shows in all situations, even in incredibly stressful ones, that they have a “cool heart,” or lack of reactivity.
This is because in Thai society the Buddhist notion of Anatman or No Self is very important. And, has over many centuries, filtered down into the culture & society.
Therefore, the person who demonstrates a lack of Self or Self-interest through a “cool heart” is showing themselves to be of superior character, or highly ethical.
One can see why displays of anger in Thailand (and many other Eastern countries) are considered the actions of a very lowly-evolved person.
There is, however, a third type of ethics.
And, it finds its grounding in Not Knowing.
In Taoism ethics are based on natural spontaneity.
For the Taoist there is a very simple formula for ethical action:
Without the referents; without the “language game” of referents, where are you?
    You don’t know!

Let me change that: the wise man is you, and i and everyone else, this even when we don't know, or we think that we know. None of it matters one bit. There is no wise man. LOL :) Wisdom is perspective, it's belief, it's just an idea, that is, until we understand that no one experience is any better than the other; that all experiences are serving their own unique purpose, whether one is seen as a fool, or as an ignorant, or as an enlightened, or a wise man. :)

Although they did not reference his name in this video -- as they have done in several of their other videos -- the phrase "You don't know what a single thing is" was made popular in the 1970s by Adi Da Samraj (then known as Bubba Free John and Da Free John), see for example, The Paradox of Instruction (1977) and The Way That I Teach (1978), which culminates in the Way of Divine Ignorance. This video channel is wonderful and a great service to humankind! Since as Master Da explained (in 1978): "We do not know what anything is. The summarization of our existence is Mystery, absolute, unqualified confrontation with what we cannot know. And no matter how sophisticated we become by experience, this will always be true of us. This Teaching, then, will never be transcended. Upon this absolute Truth we must build our lives, and I must build my Church. This Truth is summary, unqualified, irredeemable, irreducible, and absolute.... Becoming submitted to that Truth is spiritual life." Praise Adi Da and the Wisdom Masters of humankind: listen up, hear their message, understand, and see the Truth of Divine Ignorance as our Enlightened Condition... and Be Love for we don't know what a single thing is, it just IS. As I got more ....hrm mature... I have learned some stuff, things I say I know, like hitting any body part with a hammer, well , it hurts.
Also, I think I know that nothing is real, our entire universe, at it's most basic level of existence is, um, 'energy'.
I believe it's all a simulation of some kind.
Because all our senses are flawed and rather limited- we really can not 'know' anything at all.

    • @tacista
      @tacista Рік тому +4

@@undernetjack Thank you for your answer. Sorry if it sounded as a nit-picking. What I wanted to say is that all our so called ‘not knowing’ is still in the domain of ‘knowing’. And, as you say, energy, senses, simulation and even ‘knowing not to know’ are still the things that mind does when trying to hammer a nail in the sky. And we cannot escape it - it’s just the nature of the mind to ‘know’. So, probably, ‘not knowing’ in only there when there’s nothing. But that once again becomes a concept when we try to contemplate or understand it, so we’re back to square one 😊

I love this. I've been living it for years since I was in early high school and it has helped me think and see more clearly, as well as assisted me greatly through struggles that would have seen me become attached to thoughts, ideas, and fake feelings that ultimately would have been reinforced by fear. I have lived for many years of the idea that "I cannot presume to know something unless I could legitimately prove that I understand the universe in its fullest" which I humbly accept that I do not and quite likely cannot. I follow a mix of this and the scientific method in that "I could deduce that with enough effort some creature/lifeform/soul could find the full picture, but to even begin to presume that it could be me is ultimately not productive or helpful in my growth or my helping of others." I have a love and desire for knowledge, learning, and wisdom and an alleged final goal to maybe see it all one day, but only to use that as a motivator that maybe it can be learnt (since there is no true proof either that it cannot be learnt as much as it can be) to encourage myself to always seek greater knowing, feeling and love, and not to set myself up for some sort of false pride in having 'got' there or 'almost' having got there. I am both humbled by my inherent ignorance and motivated by my passionate curiosity of it all. It is a joy to explore such magnitudes as a young collection of essence that is too short lived to ever be truly old. I get to say "What's that?" in amazed curiosity my whole life like a human toddler who just fell in love with colours and shapes. What a blissful expanse.

I have liberated the self within from all name and title. A panic of not knowing slowly began to chokingly tighten its grip upon the self. In a moment of desperation, sheer terror spreading like a wildfire, I surrendered completely all that I thought I knew. As if a deep relaxing meditation had consumed me, wrapped me in a warm blanket, I knew exactly what I was as it was implanted in my mind. I had become all prevailing consciousness, fluid like water in space, yet filled with pure star light. You know, for a brief, fleeting moment, I could see my reflection, as I looked closely, I seen Brahma. He smiled at me in the reflection, and just as fast as a lightning strike, everything was gone. I can only assume, that we are all just fractal versions of God alone, and much more than just a physical avatar that has been hijacked and forced here for labor and taxation. Look friends, there is no need to fear death or hell. This realm we are in now, is far worse than any hell or torment. If you are alive, doing well, and living in little stress, rest assured, you can survive anything the universe has to offer. Blessings

I’m reminded of the autistic spectrum when looking at this. The idea of ‘resonance’ with an enlightened state feels more accurate than a strictly linear progression. This is why you can get glimpses while not necessarily ‘living in an enlightened state’. It’s not so much where you are but where you ‘return to’. I guess you could argue that you are more or less in resonance with some states/stages more than others.

🙏🌺 Ancient Indian Tradition said : the Brahman (the Spirit) is THAT, knowing which everything else is KNOWN" ...
the mind does not know because it is an instrument that can't grasp (enter into) the Essence of things ...
the Spirit, that is the Essence of all that exists, knows all things by IDENTITY ...🙏🌺

    How do I know I don't know?

  • @liamp6491

I know where I am in relation to anything that exists within my understanding. My understanding so vast i could explore it for centuries and never grasp the full idea. The subconscious emotional reaction to surroundings and environment tells us how valuable where I am is. What it does for the bettermemt of me and my ideals. To destroy that and obliterate all those connections and desires is evil and selfish. This video is sinister.

We know ENOUGH. It is not like we cannot know anything or don't know anything actually if you start to know about anything in this universe you will definitely know what you want to know but there will be always something more to know even immortal cannot know everything. Knowing that know only that which is ENOUGH to live your life. Thinking about a cup what it is i think is the actual ignorance. "You Don't Know What A Single Thing Is" i think should be "You Don't know everything" and that's fine.

Do we know enough? If yes, why is there mass suffering in the world? Also, thinking about a cup was a dumbed-down example to make us know that we do not know. "if you start to know about anything in this universe you will definitely know what you want to know" But how do you know "what" you want to know? You assume your "knowing" before you know it? This is ignorance. A deep-rooted one.

@@karmapeople1735 Agreed. What @asangoham is trying to point out is that our knowledge is limited by the senses. We limit our reality by just what the senses show us.
Also, it's a direct pointer to "is-ness". The fundamental truth. The essence of this world. Something we can never know, as it's not an object to our senses. It is us. It is existence itself.
