It's sad to see his grave untended. He was a great portrait artist and a great Bohemian! He used to pat children on the head in the street 'it case it's one of mine'! He was fascinated by Romany gypsies and learned to speak their language. He used to travel around the country with his family in a Romanian caravan and live their way of life. I've always been fascinated by him. Thank you for this video.
I have never heard of this chap, but obviously a natural and talented man and deserved more recognition with a will to travel and followed my comrades for which l thank you sleep tight my freind rest in peace 😢😢
I brought an apartment in Victoria Street Tenby, four doors down is where John lived with his wife for a period of time, it has the blue plaque with his name
Don't know anything about Art, although respect those who are Artistic, but one thing for sure respect the Art of Unusual Things....Another Great Video of remembrance...
✨ Hi Paul hope your well 😊 I'm afraid I've never heard of Augustus John but may he rest in peace god bless him 🙏🌹🕊️ 🎨 thank you Paul for showing this great video 🤳😃👍✨
A artist 🎉who could paint really great 🎉 sadly missed by family friends another great video from the great English 👍 utuber always humble kind human being have a great day always 👍😊🇬🇧🇺🇸
Very talented man and also a colourful character ! A good friend of both Dylan and Caitlin Thomas plus I have a huge admiration for Dylan Thomas"s work . Under Milk Wood a play for voices -1953 - is my favourite 💚
I also have never heard of him. Your video has now opened my eyes to who he was. I like learning about people and your video does that. Thank you Paul.
Hi Paul always look forward to your videos I’ve never heard of this artist but I’m sure he was a very talented man I love to paint I find it very therapeutic and I’ve gotten quite good at it I like painting pictures for people to brighten up their day so far they have been received and appreciated you should have a go doesn’t matter what you paint as long as you like it take care Paul luv ya ❤️😊
I'm from Brazil and I really like your videos. I appreciate the beauty of cemeteries and tombs around the world. I'm waiting for a video of Chris Cornell grave, I'm a fan of his.
Thank you for covering this prolific, bohemian painter's extraordinary life! Augustus John's portaiture and landscapes are phenomenal..He understood his subjects and this connection was evident in all his stunning portraits. I saw his beautiful painting 'Reverie', (the tired climber Dorelia), at the Art Gallery of NSW a few years ago and it is unforgettable..Paul, I find Victorian era bad boys soo fascinating..May I suggest another incredibly gifted, gorgeous man - Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton..He was a dashing 19th century British explorer, soldier, scholar, travel writer, iconoclast, sexologist, mystic, multilinguist and translator of erotic novels such as the Karma Sutra and Arabian Nights..His 'tent tomb' at Mortlake London, is just the most amazing monument..Sir Richard is buried with his wife, Lady Isabel and you can actually climb a small ladder behind the structure and look into their Mausoleum.. It contains artifacts from his world-wide adventures and I've never seen anything quite like it! Anyway, it's just a suggestion..Have a great day Paul.☮️🇦🇺
Another good presentation. I had heard of Augustus John, not so much for his works but for his very bohemian life style, he allegedly fathered many children with different ladies, possibly a bit on the seedy side but absolutely we shouldn’t judge, he was a revered artist - I think that making videos does show an artistic streak, - we cannot all oil paint, or sketch but it comes out in other ways. - You are producing something that many like to watch.
Es ist immer schmerzlich zu sehen, wieviel von einem so großartigem Menschen übrig geblieben ist. Er lebt weiter in der Erinnerung 😮 Dankeschön für dieses Video. Paul 👍👍
I had never heard of this artist before, not through ignorance, but I was not allowed to choose Art in high school and my life did not continue on a path that included much Art history and famous artists. But I did watch your video and found it very interesting. I am compelled to watch many videos about “ people I’d never heard of” because I’m not going to hear about that persons life, their story, and I believe to hear of someone for the first time is to be educated! I have looked up some of his work too 😊 Thankyou for another great video, Paul. The countryside⛰🏕 is so beautiful and peaceful. I imagine if one wanted to rest in peace, they would definitely do so in the middle of that green landscape-simply gorgeous! ❤ I hope you are doing well Sir👏🏻👏🏻 x
I know quite a lot about Augustus John, somewhat of a dodgy character but I like his paintings. His sister was an amazing artist too, he said himself she was better than him. 😊
Great videi paul never heard of augustus john alas but my brother .might have he is an artist and a very good one at that Sad to see his grave in such a bad state anyway you found it which is the main thing What a beautiful artist he was and glad he had a long life as well cheers for now paul R i p augustas 🙏🥀
Hi Paul. Thanks for this one. It’s odd but I think I had heard of him at some time in the distant pass but I can’t say I actually knew anything about him of have knowingly seen any of his work. He certainly led a very unconventional life by the sound of it! I will have to take a look at some of his works. As always, keep ‘em coming! Kind regards, Mark
Hi Paul. Very old plots here , all overgrown or sunk beyond recognition. Nice that the lawns are kept nice though. Ive never heard of the artist, but he seemed to like the lady's lol.
Thank you for sharing that. No I don’t think I’ve heard of him when I go to the gallery because we got a lot of hearts and galleries in Liverpool. I’ll have to have a look got one big one by the docs thank you for sharing that you take care. keep safe drive carefully 👍🙂
Hi Paul and another great video especially of a home grown artist, one of my hobbies is drawing geometric portraits using draughtsman and technical drawing on paper, I'm just an amateur but Augustus was an absolute master, thank you again for another cracking video....like deployed and I've shared it too....👽🤘
Augustus John was a magnificent painter. How his wife Dorelia put up with his many affairs l do not know. Definitely a saintly lady to embrace all his illegitimate children, together with their own. We would have had more of his work if he had not decided to be THE GREAT PAINTER, which involved being a great drinker around town, but putting the painting to one side.
I've never heard of Augustus John until now. A very interesting presentation about a very Bohemian character. I wonder what happened to the painting of a naked Miriam Margoyles?
I'm bummed I've never heard of Augustus John before. I thought I had, and thought he was Dutch. Then realized what a dumb assumption that was because he's in an English cemetery 🤣 but love the art world, great job.
Hi Paul. How about visiting the grave of Tom Pryce the Welsh racing driver killed at the 1977 South African Grand Prix. Tragic story. He seems to have become a forgotten man.He is laid to rest at St Bartholomews church Otford Kent near Sevenoaks.
I think perhaps Arthur Joyce Cary's novel, "The Horse's Mouth", may have been influenced by the life and times of Gerald Wilde, the abstract surrealist painter.
Apparently I’d heard or read somewhere maybe in a biography about Caitlin Thomas (Dylan Thomas’s wife) by George Tremlet, he ran over one of his kids in his Bentley who sadly died but as he had so many children he didn’t notice 💭🏴🆗
Ps Also when being interviewed by a journalist outside the BBC one day he affectionately patted a passing child on the head and arrogantly said = ‘One never Knows!!’
He was an amazing man I could tell you any number of things about him lets start with one in 1913 he was in Paris he went and purchased a number of stone heads from Amedeo Modigliani there is a photo of one of these head in his house these heads today with be worth a lot of money whats interesting is that Modigliani in 1913 was not an artist whose work commanded a lot of money.
Hi Paul. Got to admit was looking forward to your new video. But got to say disappointed as not got a clue who this person was. Not sure who recommended, but definitely not one of your good ones. Appreciate you can't please everybody.
Yeh sadly there’s not always going to be big names to visit. So I have to take what and who’s about to tell their story when I’m logistically in a location…. Sadly that’s the nature of the beast with this sort of thing. 🙏
I think every video you do Paul and have done are fantastic admittedly some more than others but never have I felt disappointed I enjoy every single visit you do. Thanks mate 🙏🙏
Not my cup of Tea on this one. If you were to ask a Yorkshire person "which part of Yorkshire do you grow your Tea"? And you would get the Famous Tom Hanks puff ball face reaction. LOL
Great video! I once did a radio show about this great man. He's still talked about and remembered.
It's sad to see his grave untended. He was a great portrait artist and a great Bohemian! He used to pat children on the head in the street 'it case it's one of mine'! Hi Paul how you doing had any problems of that nutty woman 👩
Apparently I’d heard or read somewhere maybe in a biography about Caitlin Thomas (Dylan Thomas’s wife) by George Tremlet, he ran over one of his kids in his Bentley who sadly died but as he had so many children he didn’t notice 💭🏴🆗

OM - Order of Merit, RA - Royal Academy

I’m surprised he had time for any art with all them kids 😂
