    Parabéns, Liz! All the best to you, your husband and your puppy! I feel your struggle with bureaucracy, it's just never easy and you need a lot of patience. And yes, good lesson for anyone, that you learned the hard way: always check any legal documents very carefully...
    Also thank you so much for all your videos! They've really helped with my Portuguese learning!

    Congratulations not only on your beautiful wedding but your success with the various bureaucratic agents. I feel your pain. We've learnt 'the rule of the camera/IMT etc'... that is: expect at least three visits even if you have all the correct documentation. I think it's a condition for such agencies to not accept/grant anything first time. It was hilarious on one occasion when we given the usual "Não volte outra hora" when the 'mean lady' asked "is it your first time here?", we explained it was our third she reluctantly said oh okay then you can have said document. I think I may just tell them it's my third visit next time I need to apply for something! It's exhausting. Glad it all got sorted in the end for you and wishing you a wonderful future together.

    Parabens. I trust this will make me patient in any interactions I have with Portuguese bureaucracy (I'm waiting to get an appointment in London for a Cartao de Cidadao). I'm also glad that I have an advogado as a good friend, and others who would help me out if I need it. Having said all that, thank you so much for sharing your experience, dreadful as it was. All the best for the coming days!

    hi Liz, don't feel too bad. Sadly this is more normal than not. I feel your pain and stress though..I had a very similar experience when I registered my marriage here in Portugal too. My husband is also American..you would think me being Portuguese would have helped in the process, but it didn't. In our case, the American postal service messed up... took forever to get the apostille..then numbers didn't match on the translations either.. (stupid me for not checking either)..I was heavily pregnant and few days to go on my husband's last visa extension...talk about stress.. Anyways, I'm happy it worked out in the end and you had your special day. Congratulations e Muitas Felicidades para o futuro!

    That's wonderful news, congratulations! I got married in Guinea-Bissau (a Lusophone country in Africa) in the mid 90s, and I'm going to go out on a limb to say that that was an even more arduous experience in many respects, but even so, I look back on it very fondly. (To be fair, unless you're fabulously wealthy, having a big wedding just about anywhere is probably an enormous pain.) From your video it looks like you had a lovely time. All the best to you and Mike, Liz! Muitos parabéns e muitas felicidades!

    Complaints: I've used that method in the UK! I needed to sort out an extension to my lease so I could sell it. The law says that the leaseholders must permit it, and even how much he should charge me - but he was getting more and more difficult about it. So I pulled back, and suggested I buy him a beer in a nice local pub. It took half an hour to sort, and I had a good agreement.

    Thanks for sharing your wedding story/saga! Congratulations and well done. I love personal stories of content creators. In addition, even though I won't need to plan a wedding, this story is actually very helpful to understand bureaucratic processes in PT as well as possible creative work-arounds that I wouldn't have considered (like hiring a virtual assistant and seeking out online options to purchase things you've tried on locally, e.g. your dress). Well done and again, congratulations. Blessings to you for many happy years to come!!

    Thank you so much for this video Liz and a massive congratulations to you and Mike. My partner is Portuguese and I’m British and we are doing the crazy thing and getting married in Portugal. Firstly thank you for posting the apostile service you used in Portugal for translation and notarisation which is really helpful. Please can I ask where did you get your document of single status. The government site says I don’t need a certificate of no impediment but I’m unsure what I do actually need. Can I ask what document did you use? Obrigada xx

    Parabéns pelo o casamento lindo! We have lived in Portugal since 2014. It has many pros! However the major con is the simply awful "customer service" (quotation marks necessary!) It's very true as you say that wages are meager and working hours quite long. HOWEVER - those wages are badly needed and are dependent on how happy you keep your customers! Especially in small family owned businesses, yet they simply don't seem to be bothered. We've had treatment that is basically just rude in small and large businesses - all we want to do is give them our money!! Those working in government offices are sadly the same.

    • @Maria-js9ou
      @Maria-js9ou 2 роки тому

      The cause of bad customer service is not low wages but a culture, see ppietra p's explanation, seems pretty good to me. As for "all we want to do is give them our money" it's not true, you want to get a service (which can sometimes be provided unwillingly) in exchange for your money. You are not giving alms, nor are they beggars!

    • @mlk1965
      @mlk1965 2 роки тому

      @@Maria-js9ouWe want to exchange our money for services or goods. That is a normal exchange between people in every land. As we try to be pleasant customers, it would make their day and ours happier if the employees managed to give at least willing service. We all have experienced bad days at work but as you can see from the experiences here, many Portuguese seem to be determined to be surly and unhelpful. Nowhere did I indicate that the employees are beggars.

    • @Maria-js9ou
      @Maria-js9ou 2 роки тому

      @@mlk1965 Now you're saying the same thing as I did, which is different from what you said earlier

    • @mlk1965
      @mlk1965 2 роки тому

      @@Maria-js9ou I also thought that @ppietra made a good point. I think you misunderstood my comment. When I said that " we want to give them our money " I was emphasising that customers are vitally important to every business and should be treated as such. This would benefit the business owners, the employees and the customers.

    Thanks a lot for this! My wedding is in Sintra, Colares (Portugal) this year (September) and it has been stressful, so the honesty in your video is much appreciated because I can relate!! I was born in London and my fiancée is Portuguese - we submitted our documents to the Portuguese embassy in London last week but I didn't need a recent birth certificate, nor did I have to get anything legalised or notarised! It took us 10 weeks to get the appointment so we are cutting it fine but we were given a code which we now need to present to the registry office in Sintra and pray they have availability for someone to legalise the wedding! It almost sounds too straight forward so I am dreading more hiccups a long the way! Surely it can't be that straight forward. Fingers crossed anyway! Did you have a celebrante? Xxx

    Congratulations Liz. Sounds just like Spain. My daughter wanted to get married here but it was a bureaucratic nightmare like the one you described. But it's even worse here as all civil documents can be no older than three months!! The offices tend to open ten minutes late, and the 'funcionarios' go for a coffee after half an hour. In the end they got married in London and just had a ceremony in Spain. I feel for you!

    I believe those unfortunate situations have little to do with salaries or being undervalued. It has roots in the culture, of how people expect some level of respect in many relationships, even when they screw up, and how they approach criticism and professionalism. It doesn’t matter if they are well payed, an employee or the employer, in many situations the first reaction will be to try to shift the blame to some other guy, company or situation, or even say that you are wrong, they don’t like to be put on the line. People let those feelings get the better of them, and you might actually see some passive aggressive behaviour, mixed with inferiority complex.

    I knew I wouldn't understand my car insurance document, in Portuguese - but I should have checked the address! My Cartão never arrived. The day my car's inspection was due, I found out why - the car's documents would have gone to an address that doesn't exist. A lot of driving around, between the garage and the Registro, €35 for a 'change of address', and I finally got the right document to get my car inspected.

    Education in Portugal, and I am not talking about school, rather education at home from parents, family and social envinroment will make people despise the idea of the customer is always right and reinforce defensive behaviours. if you as a foreigner try to address the situation in the typical anglo saxonic manner in an envinronment and culture that is relatively emotional, pushing back harshly will not have the desired outcome, and if you think calling the manager or the boss will present a solution, nope, it can actually make things worse, as generally the boss will be far more arrogant and even blunt .
    That said I have lived in England and the USA and I also need to note that the way customers , paritcularly british and american usually address problems does not really work with latin based mindsets ( and by latin i mean where the romanic legacy is very persistent, portugual, spain, italy greece, certain areas of france even). in fact and while it was not directed at me, i have seen how often customers would behave with employees on stores and such and again while those situations were not even directly related with me, as a half portuguese i often started to think that if they would be talking with me in the same manner i would have extreme problems to not blow up and start knocking people around using many of the things I did learn as a private miltary contractor in Somalia, Iraq and so on.
    That said because the portuguese mindset is considerably more based on emotions than what one can expect, being extremely pleasant and nice, using expressions as "por favor" " se nao fosse incomodo" and alike will often result in people going above and beyond expectations - a large amount of people will go out of their way to "repay kindness" in a manner than again, is unusual in the anglosaxonic envinronment.

      @vervideosgiros1156 Рік тому

      Saying "por favor" , "bom dia" "obrigado/a" isn't some kind of a favor: it's a question of politeness and social courtesy. If you start being a Karen and treat people like if they were your slaves, of course that people get annoyed. It's not because you, as a costumer, are in a position of power, that it gives you the right to be rude and unpolite! Probably Liz had bad luck with the people she encountered, because she's very nice, so I bet it wasn't her fault.

    Would you suggest getting a lawyer to assist with the process of getting getting married in Portugal from another country.

    Oh dear sounds like a nightmare, though not overly surprised as even getting served in a busy supermarket bakery can be traumatic there 😂 ok, exaggerating a bit, love the country. Glad my hometown came through with the dress 👌🏼

    Congrats Liz! As an Iranian living in Portugal for 6 years, I totally understand all the difficulties you have been through. For every step taken in the bureaucracy process in Portugal, I have suffered a lot, I have faced mean people and I have cried after leaving the place. I do not like to be disgraceful but that´s a reality that has occurred to me. I wish people were at least a bit more friendly.

      It's possible that people had less patience with us because of that, yes. But it was only 2 people out of MANY that we had a bad experience with, mostly people were wonderful!
