    I think this was one of my all-time favorite episodes, because of both the sewing level of the participants, as well as how well-thought out all three challenges were. I don't usually care for the second challenge, but I do think combining two coats could have some actual practical application. If you have ripped or stained a particular portion of one coat (or it no longer fits, or if elements are out of style), this could potentially give new life to a favorite coat. I kind of wish I hadn't donated my expensive '90s wool swing coat to Goodwill last year...
    As a child of the '70s, I can say that maxi, midi, and mini (and don't forget micro mini) described only the length of the skirt or dress. I have a distinct memory of my mother explaining the terms to me after I'd asked her what they meant. The hippie-style voluminous maxi dresses might be what you think of when you picture a maxi dress, but really, it was the length that defined it as maxi. Maxi skirts were really popular, too, and those tended to be A-line skirts (popular hostess attire for dinner parties).
    As for the lace panels, that was machine-made lace. While lace *can* be crocheted, crocheting can't be done by machine. Lace can be knitted (which obviously can be done by machine), but most machine made lace is going to be done by a completely different process.

    When I saw that they were making a quilted jacket from scratch, I thought ‘no way!’ I’ve only ever made a couple of quilts but I’d need a few days for that pattern challenge. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who preferred the curved binding. I really wasn’t keen on Brogans maxi dress. I think Princess Diana wore a shorter, similar version as a maternity dress in the 80’s. I feel it’s still any bodies game at the moment. One bad week and anyone could go. I think the judges must’ve been watching this channel last year, because the judging does seem fairer this year. Take care x

    One of the things I would like to see is a change of models to men, and making mens garments, after all the men on the Bee are making women’s clothing, and in the balance of fairness. If we are trying to look at sewers skills across the board then this would be fair and add a new dimension.

    I made a quilted coat from scratch, self drafted pattern with silk batik fabric and I made it completely reversible with all hand sewn hidden seams… took me an entire week and six months on still haven’t sorted out the buttons… I have decided to title it.. Edge to Edge as they used to call it. Another great unpicking. I am not a quilter but I love to hear and watch others with their given craft. Thank you for taking the time to share.

      WOW Debra! all I can say is Get Those BUTTONS! All that hard work. Completely understand though, buttons can make or break a garment so you can't just chuck any on, but finding shops with a good range is hard. Even in my shop, I only carry a few ranges as it's space and money and looking at them on the internet isn't the same. Challenge for you.....get the buttons on and send us a pick by end of the series! Would love to celebrate it! Stuart :)

    Love the idea of a retrospective slipper 🤣. Go for it Ting! Lovely for you to have a challenge where you have expertise. I thought they did a really good job given they weren’t quilters but it did make me sweat watching them try to do all that in the time. I have some unused log cabin squares so I think a quilted gilet is in my future. The transformation was the best one yet I thought. I loved Annie’s red coat and I agree with Aine - it’s something home sewers could and would tackle when they have a coat they don’t wear any more. I hated Brogans dress - the duvet made me feel I’ll and the style overall was very old fashioned. Christians was fabulous, the fabric made it And the inserted turquoise took it up a level I felt. Gills was a deserving winner - loved the chevrons. As much as I hate to disagree with Ting a maxi dress is the length not the style - so there was one that was too short.

    I think after 4 episodes we can now all agree that they've been listening to our superior wisdom: we get the history bits, the explanations of sewing techniques, the "usefulness" of challenges...
    I thought the supposed simplicity of making a coat out of a coat was good. Taking the sleeves/collar/whatever from one garment and putting it into another might be something homesewers do more often than making a glamorous evening dress out of a teatowel and some old socks.
    Calling the next ejectee at 9.11pm is probably going to be a lot more difficult since all those who struggled from the start are out now (no offense to your Mystic Meg abilities, Ting!). And the ones who seemed solid in episodes 1-3 have had a wobble in this one (Marni, Man Yee), and the previously volatile ones have now come out top (e.g. Annie). I really like Cristians stuff, hope he goes far.
    Have a good week, can't wait for the next one with lovely Adam! That should make up for the dreaded kiddy episode.

    he pattern challenges this season because they are setting things up on a more even starting point: giving them wool fabric or a set of pre-cut squares makes that challenge more about following a pattern. I think Brogan's dress, because she used a vintage duvet cover, verged into costume territory.

  • @FizzBradley

    I always thought a Maxi dress had spaghetti straps, and sort of form fitted around the top, (not to the waist) but like a gradual increase in fabric from the neckline, with the bottom of the dress being quite full and voluminous but, I've just looked up the definition and it just states "a dress reaching to the ankle"

  • @teddy-3765
    @teddy-3765 2 роки тому

    I found it odd that they cut out the panels before quilting it too.
    The transformation challenge was very wartime make-do-and-mend. There are lots of survuiving examples, mostly of dresses, where two old dresses were remade into one new dress (in a newer style). For once I really liked the subject of this challenge, even though I didn't particularly like most of the resulting coats.
    On the whole I liked the duvet made-to-measure, having made garments from old duvet covers myself {looks at current work-in-progress - an 18th Century gown from an old IKEA duvet set}. I thought that, on the whole they had some lovely results (though I agree with Ting and Aine's comments about the well made but very horribly 80s "nan" dress by Brogan).
    I like the 11-minutes-past-nine calling it - I didn't think to try it myself buut will try to rememebr to do it for this week's episode.

  • @monicas2269
    @monicas2269 2 роки тому +1

    I thought asking them to do patchwork and make a garment was a bit much. I know it's all sewing but It's a completely different area to dressmaking. The backs of the jackets looked odd being plain.
    I didn't think patchwork and quilting were discovered in the USA, what about the UK doing it for a few hundred years.
    I don't remember patchwork in the 60s either.

    I loved the quilted jacket technical challenge as I am a quilter and I have made quilted jackets in the past; BUT, as everyone has said, the time element was not realistic. O, to have had just 45 minutes more would have made a world of difference for all the sewers--especially when it came to the binding. Cutting up two coats to make one had me cringing. Perhaps had they shown how worn out the coats were I might have liked the challenge. Hmm. The Made to Measure was fun. I liked the diversity of the used duvet fabrics and prints, and I'm glad Gil won Garment of the Week though I did like Christian's dress as well.

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  2 роки тому +1

      It was a cracking episode for sure but yeah, the binding alone would take ages....I loved the edit...'5 minutes left' and then one sewer was like....right just binding to go! hahah. If it only took 5 minutes hey haha

    If I had been given that quilted jacket challenge, I would have run out of the room. That would have been the end for me. I liked Annie's jacket colors with the black contrast. I think that binding gave them all trouble. I think they were all amazing considering the time frame they were given. I also liked Annie's transformation, it had a nice shape. I'm with Ting, I have my eye on Annie. On MTM challenge, I may be the only one who didn't care for Gill's dress here, the style and combo of fabric didnt appeal. I liked the style of Debra's and Christian's fabric combo was beautiful. Looking forward to seeing Adam next week!

    I thought the first challenge was so ridiculous time wise that I found myself being up for the 2 who didn't finished as it was so unrealistic, and I was irritated with the ones who did cos they made it look like it was a reasonable request , I was inspired by the idea though. I also felt uncomfortable with the idea of coats getting torn up when they could go to good homes. I agreed with Jill winning as soon as I realised she was one of the few who had actually dragged a worn out duvet out of the back of the hotpress rather than 'an online charity shop' Yea right!!! But love the show and your analysis.

    Hello hello! Late to the comments I know, but! I just watched your review with my sewing friend! The one who I couldn't be with during lockdown... which is why I first found your GBSB reviews! Full circle!
    Anyway, I thought the coat thing was silly. *Reduce* reuse recycle does not mean take two functional coats, discard half of both to make one single new one 🤦🏻‍♀️, completely wrong meaning of "reduce" lol. I like the idea of the quilted jackets (patchwork/quilter in a past life) but I did not like the fabric choices they were given at all. Although they did claim it was recycled waste from previous years? They were all very twee, or maybe it was the way they grouped the selections. Also, plain back? I don't think they were ever meant to be truly wearable items.
    Brogans dress was awful colour/style wise, I am finding the judging very subjective again. I liked Angela's best. Gill is awesome, I just found the stripes got lost against the bolder print so it looked washed out.
    Retrospective slippers r us.
    See you next week x

      Never too late for comments! It's just good to be talking sewing!! Yes, a lot of the patchwork world fabric can be twee. • @moory27

    Pretty sure those squares were not recycled fabric.... I did noticed the lack of chaining, it is a technique for speed in garment sewing but can only really be used in specific circumstances like making binding etc. or if you are making multiple of the same garment so it's not suprising that there was a lack of it. Transformation Challenge, Was more in-line with what people do do when transforming thrifted garments I just wish they had 5 hours as they would of been so much better. Made to Measure. I felt like Maxi dress was too loose of a brief. I feel like it should of been something like Maxi Length, w/ a Collar (not specifice just that it needs one), w/Sleeve Length, w/Closure type as some people did a lot more work than others but also how can you compare it otherwise. Annie's not sure why they said crochet when the technique was Lace Insertion which is a know and slightly historical technique. Gil's diagram had Bishop Sleeves so I was confused for a bit that they were saying cape sleeves until it was revealed and I was like oh the diagram was wrong! Loved Christian's, feel like he is the darkhorse in this series and thoguht it would be Garment of the Week. I won't say which ones I didn't like. I feel if Man Yee had done a little worst she would have gone but Steve was the right choice in the end. Here's the thing, "Maxi" just refers to length which I believe to be just above the floor length but I think it can be ankle too, that is the only thing it refers to anytihng else is fair game so sorry Ting I have to say your incorrect on that. Steve with the Sharpie I legit was like do it go on, do it, screw them as a last hoorah! Annie and Christain's are ones to watch.

    This is when I start abandoning the series. The judging is so subjective, clearly Patrick and Esme have favourites and that makes them very partial on the comments. The whole "Amish" looking dress was a big no. Immediately no. In the realm of MAXIs some were anything but that. Also its still very unclear the percentage that each challenge really has to the final choice. Not feeling very hopeful on the kiddy's week...
