      I personally prefer to believe that Puss and Goldie were lying about the birthday wish rule because they didn't want any one to know their wish. While Death was great, seriously, his whistle still sends shivers up my spine, the character I loved most in this movie is Perrito. His backstory is so horrible and sad, yet he still has so much optimism, appreciates all the good things in life, and just wants to help people. Nah people understand the lesson but it's always frustrating to see WORLD CHANGING POWERS turned down because of a lesson. Okay so Puss realizes he doesn't need more lives, good for him, what's his second choice then? How about a nice house on the countryside to share with Kitty? What about a cool weapon, since in the end they continued the outlaw thing? What about ensuring Perrito is free of parasites? Anything is better than nothing, and they'd be avoiding a potential catastrophe by using the wish before Jack even had a chance to. It's an amazing movie from a meta perspective, but judging the protagonists' decisions in universe I think they were pretty foolish.

    • @aaronsan6488
      @aaronsan6488 Рік тому +550

      @@7ofspades7 I think there wasn't any other choice but to destroy the wish. It's not like they had downtime to sit and discuss whether they should make the wish or not, and then they decided to destroy it. They destroyed it so Jack Horner wouldn't be able to use it.
      At first they wanted the wish for themselves then Puss overcame death. Then for a few seconds all of them realised they don't need the wish, Jack comes back out of the bag, and was gonna wish for all the magic.
      Correct me if I am wrong, but in those sequences, I don't think there's a moment for them to use the wish for something else.

    • @7ofspades7
      @7ofspades7 Рік тому +22

      @@aaronsan6488 There wasn't a lot of time to be fair, but I still think when they saw a huge man crawling out of the bag they could've made a wish then and there, riches or something would have been easy. They also had the whole fight to think of something, if they were able to come to terms with destroying the wish in that small moment where everyone held it, they could have easily formulated a plan that *didn't* involve destroying it. Why not let Goldi take it, and distract Jack while she wishes for the luxuries her family wanted to begin with? In the end my main point is just that, it's completely fair to be disappointed nobody got the wish. The whole movie built up to it and it's hard to believe the characters themselves weren't at least a little disappointed they didn't get to grow wings or something. Feeling that way about the how things turned out is not failure to understand the movie.

    • @aaronsan6488
      @aaronsan6488 Рік тому +184

      @@7ofspades7 ah that's where you got it a bit mixed up. It took the whole first fight for Goldi to figure out she didn't need the wish and then Puss overcoming death for him to realise he didn't need the wish, which gave Kitty a person she could trust, "no magic required".
      Making the wish in the 10 seconds that Jack Horner came from the bag is unlikely. They were SHOCKED Jack emerged in giant form, so maybe they didn't have the presence of mind to think of making the wish to make sure Jack couldn't. It's 10 seconds.
      After that, Jack immediately snatched the wish away, and would have gotten what he wanted if Perito didn't distract.
      And once they got the map, the fastest way to get rid of it is to destroy it, so they did that. The whole thing took less than two minutes.
      I think it's not that you don't get the message, but you seem to miss how they really had no choice but to destroy the wish.
      On another level, them making the wish in the examples you gave would have messed up the tone completely. Jack emerges, and immediately they have the presence of mind to make a wish? That messes up the setting up of Jack as a threat and greatly lowers the stakes of the fight.
      If it was during the fight, how low of a threat would Jack have to be if they could just make the wish then and there? Again, lowers the stakes. A low tension fight is boring. Even if it is short.
      In terms of storytelling, destroying the wish is satisfactory because the heroes are sacrificing something (the wish, whether it's for riches, or no parasites or whatever) to achieve victory against Jack. The victory feels earned because there was some sort of sacrifice.

If this were a typical animation something would've happened like Jack Horner would've wounded Softpaws with an explosive poison apple, Death would've showed up to take her away and Puss would've used his wish to bring her back to life. Instead the filmmakers chose to subvert that and go with our heroes realizing they already have everything they need. I really am glad they kept the dog as upbeat as he was and there was no crazy twist with him being secretly bad. Same with Big Jack Horner and his role in the movie as a straight irredeemable villain. With as many characters as they had, they gave a good character arcs making you care about them and none were ignored. Honestly a brilliant movie and was so surprised when I was hearing good things about it and finally went to watch it when I wasn’t going to watch it at all. All the Easter eggs from other animated and live-action movies were well done. There was a part at the start that reminded me of some shots in Attack on Titan the way it was directed. I think since Kitty Softpaws overheard Puss talking about the church and wanting to be there, she lied that she wasn't there as a sympathy knowing that Puss actually felt bad. You can tell her attitude changed a lot after that as well. Just so much to love about this movie. Unless it is dethroned, this is my best animated movie of the year. It's very Oscar worthy.

    Heeey ! So glad you guys finally covered it ! This movie sucker punched me in the best way possible ! I had no will nor curiosity watch it for the longest time, but I just continuously heard great things about it, so I went to the cheaper smaller theater around me, dragging my feet to go watch it... and I came out with my feets flapping on a little cloud !
    This movie just made my eyes twinkle with pleasure and pure joy !
    As an animation film director, this one is easily in the top 5 Dreamworks of all times, with Prince of Egypt, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 and How To Train your Dragon 1.
    This movie was definitely Dreamworks's answer to Spiderverse !
    Like KungFu Panda, this movie is pure comfort food ! I've seen it twice in theaters, and watched countless reactions and reviews about it, and probably still going again for a 3rd time with some other friends before it leaves the theaters. If it still plays at your place, go watch it in theaters, it's really a movie that's much more appreciable on the big screen.
    As for the villains, sure, Death is the absolute standout that will go down in history as Dreamworks's best and most iconic villain ever, but Goldilock and the bear family and Jack Horner are actually great on their own, each for their own reasons, the 3 of them working in tandem to be the perfect antagonist (Death is philosophical and the one that kickstarts the whole movie, Goldilock is the sympathethic one with a redeeming arc, and Jack Horner is just pure evil human greed personificated, which reminds me a lot about the animated short Man, from Steve Cutts, without a shred of redeeming qualities). The fact this story was able to juggle all 3 of them so easily (when other big movies like Spiderman 3 failed) shows how hard this shit is to manage, and this movie makes it look like so effortless !
    Part of why it works so well, I believe is because it this story is built on mirrors :
    If Death is Puss's arch nemesis, philosophically speaking (Death, as opposed to Puss's 9 lives), Goldie is Kitty's opposite (she already has a "family" she can trust, even if she doesn't yet realize it, which is something Kitty never had and is desperately yearning for, to the point she hunts down the wishing star for it), and Perrito is the exact opposite of Jack Horner (Jack had everything ever since his childhood, but always wants more, while Perrito had nothing from its youth, and is perfectly content like this and wishes for nothing more), having this perfect symmetry of 3 good guys/3 villains that just balances the movie perfectly !
    It's even shown since each one of these opposites has at least a single vs moment against the other ! It's not a coincidence if the last vs of the movie is Perrito vs Jack, with the contrast between them being that Jack, who started with an army of minions, is now all on his own, having dispatched all his army, while Perrito, who began the movie solo, has the support of all the friends he made along the road.
    The more I watch this movie and understanding the craftsmanship that went into it, not just the art, the animation, and the voices and music, but also the writing, the more it's blowing my mind.
    Some movies just click, and it's just obvious when you watch them, they just feel right ! You're blown away, don't see anything to complain about, and everything just falls in place.
    In my life, I've had that feeling with Star Wars, Back to the Future, Princess Mononoke, Amelie Poulain, Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2, How To train your dragon, Kubo and the 2 strings, Into the Spiderverse, Everything everywhere All at Once, and now this movie. It's the kind of movie that can be watched over and over and over again.
    Definitely looking forward to whatever this specific team among Dreamworks and this director is up to next (I know he's gonna direct Kung Fu Panda 4, which I'm REALLY looking forward to, now !)

      Death is powerful yes, but he is just a celestial, God, whatever name you wanna give death that means a higher life form. The star is also a higher life form or a magical device of sorts from a higher life form. And given all scenes death was in nobody else but Puss was able to see or hear him. I also only knew of him because of Adventure Time, even more so considering I'm from Brazil and few English nursery rhymes are popular here. However, the film's depiction of Little Jack Horner is actually pretty fitting with how the nursery rhyme has been used: due to the "What a good boy am I!" verse, the poem has been used to criticize spoiled child behavior and satirize self-congratulatory greed of politicians in political cartoons. In fact, some suggest the modern version of the nursery rhyme was created in the 18th century as a parody of the rhymes made for the children of the elite. So Big Jack Horner being a bratty, selfish and greedy businessman who pridefully recognizes his own cruel deeds at the same time that he never takes fault for anything he does doesn't come out of nowhere. The artbook even says they wanted to replicate 18th-century English architecture in his town to fit with when his nursery rhyme was first recorded.

    The whole point of the wish, storytelling wize, was to be the methaphor for a 'magical goal' we often put to ourselves in real life, the magic fix to our lives' problems and what we blindly go after without realising we already have what could make us happy around us. But we're ignoring or taking it for granted while trying to seek something huge and most times irrealistic.
    At the point where Jack comes out of the bag, they all have realised they already had what they wanted and no longer need the wish anyway, they destroy it so the one truly evil person can't get it given that Jack's truly selfish and irredemable and it would be best for everyone to get rid of the wish.
    So yeah, I know it could be frustraiting that no one got it but it's a lot deeper than just magic world with magic star wish.

    One of my favorite little details about this movie is how, early in the film Kitty Softpaws says "You can't tell anyone. Birthday rules" and later in the film every single person tells someone else what their wish is.

    The movie was a 10/10 for me, man. Definitely a fresh breathe of air after almost all the shitty animated movies in 2022.

    The wish would just fuck up everything. You are a bad person if you dont wish for ultimate happiness for everyone (no hunger, disease, etc). The way the handled it was VERY GOOD. A threat is here. making the wish takes time you don't have. And you NEED to keep the wish away from jack. So destroying it and sacrificing your own desires for the greater good is the best choice

    Death in the movie isn’t really a villain at all but doing his job as a Grim Reaper himself, he only wants to collect Puss In Boots last life and that’s it.
    Wagner Moura plays Death

    This is by far the best movie in 2022, This was so good. DreamWorks carried cinema in 2022 with bad guys and This. Both easily 10/10 films

    Best of the franchise since Shrek 2 and best animated film of the year with GtD's Pinocchio. Funny, Touching, and amazing animated. The Wolf is one of the best villains in an animated film. Hope they make Puss In Boots 3 With Shrek And Donkey.

    Honestly, I avoided this movie ever since I learned of it because I didn't think it would be good, but I just watched it today and it was amazing
    However how is momma bear alive? She was turned into a rug for Farquad in the first Shrek movie. Did they retcon that or are there multiple versions of the fairy tail characters?
