Greece is undoubtably one of the top countries to visit in Europe, but people often over look the island of Corfu in favor of some other popular destinations. Whether you're on a cruise or stopping over from Sarande, we put together an epic day in Corfu to highlight some of the best it has around Old Town. Check it out!
Our first stop in our day in Corfu was its Old Town. It’s located in a strategic position at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, and has its roots that date back to the 8th century BC & the Byzantine period. With the Old Town being around for so long, it’s no doubt taken influences from a host of cultures that’ve occupied the area. From the 15th century, Corfu was under Venetian rule for some four centuries, before being passed to French, British and Greek governments.
Next up was St. Spyridon Church in the center of Old Town. This Greek Orthodox Church was built in the 1580s & is the most famous church in Corfu. It’s named after the 3rd century saint who supposedly could work miracles. Within the walls of the church are a crypt to the right of the iconostasis where the remains of the Saint are kept in a double sarcophagus.
Between the Old Town and the old fortress is the esplanade, a long green square that’s a remnant of the Venetian fortifications in the 17th century. Here you’ll find a bandstand where there are often concerts, as well as a cricket pitch. The cricket pitch is a holdover from when the British held the island and is home to the only cricket team in Greece. This is the central square of Corfu & the second largest square in Europe. At the side of the Esplanade is the Liston. The Liston is a pedestrian area constructed in French influence & modeled after Rue da Rivoli in Paris. The Liston was constructed by Napoleon in 1807 in order to house the French army. The complex of buildings face the Esplanade, & the arcade is full of restaurants, cafes, & craft shops, making it the busiest area of Corfu.
We then headed over to what has been dubbed as one of the best fortification works in Europe. The Old Fortress of Corfu was constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of a former Byzantine castle. The fortress was connected to the land by a movable, wooden bridge. In 1819, the British replaced this bridge with the present stable pathway. The entrance is through the Esplanade we just went to & is carved in marble. In 1499, 1800 people were living in the Old Fortress. Unfortunately, an explosion in 1718 destroyed a large part of it and the church of Agioi Apostoli. The view from there is incredible, as you can get an awesome view of the whole town and Ionian Sea.
For dinner we went to a restaurant called Kokoria, a staple in Old Town for the last 30 years that's well known for big portions at good prices.
We wrapped up our one day in Corfu at a local place called Solo Gelato. It’d been a busy day with filming a vlog that morning and filming a vlog all day so we felt like we deserved the sweets. It's hands down the best gelato in Corfu & the service was so excellent!!

Oh man, that heat was NO JOKE! When we got off the ferry & reached our Airbnb that afternoon, we had this moment where we were just sitting on the ice cold laminate floor debating if we had the energy to film this vlog. Thank you Eric!!! Corfu is outrageously pretty. We're hoping to make it down there again in the future to actually explore the island. We've heard from some people that they have the best beaches in the country. No idea if it's true or not, but might as well try to find out!!🤣
Ya'll, I just love Greece ! The food, the landscape, everything!! I remember once a loooong time ago, my Russian great aunt came to visit for a month. There were no Russian Orthodox churches in Hsv, so the closest that we could find was a Greek Orthodox church. It apparently did the trick for her. Beautiful video.... sweat and all! 😂
That's so cool!!! Honestly I had no idea there was a Greek Orthodox church in Huntsville. We'll have to check it out when we're back during Christmas time!! Greece is just such a cool place. You've got to start planning your epic trip over there!!

(Health issues) since you've graduated, I've had neck fusions, back fusions, 2 total hip replacements, diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia and had an ablation done on my heart at UAB, now they've detected a possible blockage. I'm getting old, I tell ya and my body is giving out. That's why I enjoy your vlog so much! I get to see all these beautiful place and watch the enthusiasm is you and Hannah as you travel. ❤️

You gotta book that flight down Eddy!!!🤣 The food is just out of this world. It's kinda sad, but everywhere we go in Europe we tend to try and seek out a Greek restaurant just because we love it so much😂

Corfu is always great guys. But... Gyro in Corfu? Corfu is offering all those iconic, italian influenced dishes like pasticciada, soffrito or burdetto. Next time you will know.
