In the Torah God foretells the coming of a Prophet like Moses from among the brethren of Israelites: *I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. [Deuteronomy 18:18]* Jews and Christians typically interpret the mention of “brethren” as a reference to the Israelites themselves, i.e. the future Prophet will be an Israelite. This interpretation is nonsensical because the brethren of Israelites are not same as Israelites themselves. This is further supported when we examine the language of Deuteronomy 18:18: *“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers…”* Notice that the prophecy mentions ‘their’ (“from among their brethren”). To whom is “their” a reference? The two verses which precede this verse make it clear that the context is all of the tribes of Israel who are being collectively referenced: *For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The Lord said to me: “What they say is good” [Deuteronomy 18:16-17]* Here the mention of “the day of assembly at Horeb” is a reference to a incident in which all of the tribes of Israel camped at a mountain and they heard the very voice of God. Therefore, the Prophet like Moses cannot be a reference to the Israelites themselves, as God is referring to the brothers of all of the tribes of Israel when He spoke this prophecy. It does not make sense to say that the brothers of the tribes of Israel are the tribes of Israel, so the brothers must be a Gentile people. Moreover, another reason why the Prophet like Moses can't be an Israelite is because it causes a contradiction elsewhere in Deuteronomy: *“No prophet ever rose again in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew with such great intimacy” [Deuteronomy 34:10]* As you can see, interpreting Deuteronomy 18:18 as a reference to a future Israelite Prophet causes a contradiction with this verse which states that no Prophet like Moses would ever arise again from among the Israelites. In its commentary on this verse, the Jewish Study Bible acknowledges this contradiction that is created when Deuteronomy 18:18 is taken as a reference to an Israelite Prophet: *‘Never again’: Note the discrepancy between the perspective of this verse and the divine promise to Moses that the line of prophetic succession will continue in the future: “I will raise up a prophet for them…like yourself”* *- The Jewish Study Bible, commentary on Deuteronomy 34:10, p. 450* Since the Prophet like Moses cannot be from among the Israelites then it must be understood as a reference to a Gentile nation. In fact, there are Jewish Bible commentaries which interpret Deuteronomy in a way that leaves the door open for a Gentile Prophet. The respected Artscholl Chumash commentary states the following: *The Sages note the Torah’s statement here that in Israel there will never be a Prophet like Moses implies that among the non-Jewish nations there could be such a prophet…* *- Artscholl Chumash Commentary on Deuteronomy, p. 187* However, this cannot be a reference to just any Gentile nation, as the usage of the word “brethren” in Deuteronomy 18:18 indicates a people who are closely related to the Israelites. According to Hebrew dictionaries, the Hebrew word for brethren that is used in Deuteronomy 18:18 which is ‘ach’ can mean “brother of the same parents”, “half-brother” or “relative”. With this in mind, brethren can refer to Gentile people such as the Ishmaelites and Edomites who all trace their lineage back to Abraham and are therefore related to the Israelites. For example, the Bible explicitly refers to the Edomites, a Gentile people who lived in ancient Palestine, as the brothers of the Israelites: *“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother.” [Deuteronomy 23:7]* So we can see that “brother” in Deuteronomy 18:18 can refer to Gentile people who are closely related to the Israelites. Furthermore, the Prophet in Deuteronomy 18:18 not only have to be from the brethren of Israelites but also have to be Prophet like Moses. When we compare the lives of Moses and Muhammad we find many similarities. For example, they both received a new law from God, they both took part in an exodus as they had to flee their places of birth to escape oppression, and they were both statesmen. In fact, historians who have studied the lives of Muhammad and Moses have remarked upon the many similarities between them. The late Reverend James L. Dow (1908-1977) who authored the Collins Dictionary of the Bible, wrote under the entry of ‘Moses’: *“The only man in history who can be compared even remotely to him is Mohammed.”* *- James L. Dow, Collins Dictionary of the Bible, p. 403* In summary, the book of Deuteronomy foretells the coming of a Prophet like Moses from a Gentile nation who are the brethren of Israelites which is a reference to none other than Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him. In the Torah God foretells the coming of a Prophet like Moses from among the brethren of Israelites:
*I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. [Deuteronomy 18:18]*
Jews and Christians typically interpret the mention of “brethren” as a reference to the Israelites themselves, i.e. the future Prophet will be an Israelite.
This interpretation is nonsensical because the brethren of Israelites are not same as Israelites themselves. This is further supported when we examine the language of Deuteronomy 18:18:
*“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers…”*
Notice that the prophecy mentions ‘their’ (“from among their brethren”). To whom is “their” a reference? The two verses which precede this verse make it clear that the context is all of the tribes of Israel who are being collectively referenced:
*For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The Lord said to me: “What they say is good” [Deuteronomy 18:16-17]*
Here the mention of “the day of assembly at Horeb” is a reference to a incident in which all of the tribes of Israel camped at a mountain and they heard the very voice of God.
Therefore, the Prophet like Moses cannot be a reference to the Israelites themselves, as God is referring to the brothers of all of the tribes of Israel when He spoke this prophecy.
It does not make sense to say that the brothers of the tribes of Israel are the tribes of Israel, so the brothers must be a Gentile people.
Moreover, another reason why the Prophet like Moses can't be an Israelite is because it causes a contradiction elsewhere in Deuteronomy:
*“No prophet ever rose again in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew with such great intimacy” [Deuteronomy 34:10]*
As you can see, interpreting Deuteronomy 18:18 as a reference to a future Israelite Prophet causes a contradiction with this verse which states that no Prophet like Moses would ever arise again from among the Israelites.
In its commentary on this verse, the Jewish Study Bible acknowledges this contradiction that is created when Deuteronomy 18:18 is taken as a reference to an Israelite Prophet:
*‘Never again’: Note the discrepancy between the perspective of this verse and the divine promise to Moses that the line of prophetic succession will continue in the future: “I will raise up a prophet for them…like yourself”*

Since the Prophet like Moses cannot be from among the Israelites then it must be understood as a reference to a Gentile nation.
In fact, there are Jewish Bible commentaries which interpret Deuteronomy in a way that leaves the door open for a Gentile Prophet. The respected Artscholl Chumash commentary states the following:
*The Sages note the Torah’s statement here that in Israel there will never be a Prophet like Moses implies that among the non-Jewish nations there could be such a prophet…*

However, this cannot be a reference to just any Gentile nation, as the usage of the word “brethren” in Deuteronomy 18:18 indicates a people who are closely related to the Israelites.
According to Hebrew dictionaries, the Hebrew word for brethren that is used in Deuteronomy 18:18 which is ‘ach’ can mean “brother of the same parents”, “half-brother” or “relative”.
With this in mind, brethren can refer to Gentile people such as the Ishmaelites and Edomites who all trace their lineage back to Abraham and are therefore related to the Israelites.
For example, the Bible explicitly refers to the Edomites, a Gentile people who lived in ancient Palestine, as the brothers of the Israelites:
*“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother.” [Deuteronomy 23:7]*
So we can see that “brother” in Deuteronomy 18:18 can refer to Gentile people who are closely related to the Israelites.
Furthermore, the Prophet in Deuteronomy 18:18 not only have to be from the brethren of Israelites but also have to be Prophet like Moses.
When we compare the lives of Moses and Muhammad we find many similarities. For example, they both received a new law from God, they both took part in an exodus as they had to flee their places of birth to escape oppression, and they were both statesmen.
In fact, historians who have studied the lives of Muhammad and Moses have remarked upon the many similarities between them. The late Reverend James L. Dow (1908-1977) who authored the Collins Dictionary of the Bible, wrote under the entry of ‘Moses’:
*“The only man in history who can be compared even remotely to him is Mohammed.”*

In summary, the book of Deuteronomy foretells the coming of a Prophet like Moses from a Gentile nation who are the brethren of Israelites which is a reference to none other than Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him.
