Man, the Sumo videos are always fantastic! I have gained SO MUCH respect for Sumo wrestlers from these videos, it's crazy. I respect all martial artists, but until this channel displayed it, I was completely unaware of how athletic and flexible you have to be to compete in Sumo.
i knew a japanese sumo and i can say they are extremely atletic, the " fat" is an " armor" but they need extrem muscles power en precise technique upon that, but what he said is right about sumo " it's a sprint not a race!" with sumo matchs they are short but intensive they have extremely hight strength and technic but they need ( for the heavy part of the sumo) to use every things to move their weight so it's short! but believe in me in a short one one one match against a sumo that will be hell for their oponent it's just with their intensive use of their muscles in a short time + their weight they will tire up quicker! And one more thing, sumo have weight category, for exemple i thing the atletic black guy for his way to fighting in in one of the low weight categories
Yup. Contrary to what is commonly thought, being obese doesn't mean you are not athletic and strong. You can be both. That said, being so strong AND big/heavy, doing those explosive feats day in and out can really do a number on your joints and tendons.
It’s so cool that one of the fun “let me try this random martial art” videos turned into a serious love of and participation in sumo! Love these sumo video.
It’s really cool that you made this video to showcase everyone else at Raijin Sumo and how you’re not the only one full of surprises. This was a brilliant idea, looked like a lot of fun, and really came together well. Also, good luck at worlds!
Challenge for sumo players, I remember long ago in one Japanese variety show, they were challenged to imitate Japanese idol's dance sequence. Some of them did very great, even the idols were surprised!! So how about challenging your sumo partners to dance like k-pop LoL
I really like Eric. He seems like such a kind and gentle soul, but at the same time he's very intimidating. I'd not want to face off with him. 😬 All these sumo related videos have really begun to open my eyes into the interesting world of sumo. This is an interesting journey you've embarked upon, Seth, and thank you taking us along for the ride! Also, good luck at worlds! 😁
Duuuuuude! Alright! After seeing this badass video with all of my friends, and realizing we know the same folks in the Sumo World, you gotta let us interview you! I'll hit you up later! Man, this whole video gave me the WORST FOMO! The Raijin camp looked so fun!!! Sabrina and I were planning to attend, but we had just moved to another city and we were broke! And look at Edo throwing salt in your jumping game! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I love how every look into these various martial arts disciplines on this channel is a look at a whole world and subculture I never would have thought existed
All kiding aside, I watch a lot of martial art videos, I'm a bit of a nerd. These Sumo videos are the only ones that make me consider getting back into it. Not sure at 51 if my body would allow it.
Hey sensei Seth! I'm here again to ask u to do a kendo episode!!! I will ask every video till the end of time till u finally do it. Also I love all ur sumo videos 😊
Thank you so much for showing Sumo properly! As you said it's probably the least respected Martial Art in the west but it's so cool. Also nice to see those people who might be easily stamped off as "fat" somewhere else, be shown to be really damn athletic people. A lot of Western thinking is really narrow but we are working on broadening it and you are doing your part in that! Thank you for that!
Another coincidentally timed upload Seth! The Aki Basho is about to start today at ~5:00 PST. Wishing the team all the best luck when world comes around!
I really like this vid. Would love to see a compilation all the martial artist you know and do just athletic endeavors. From boxing, BJJ, capoeira, Muy Thai, sumo, karate, etc. Do calculations and metrics to see the similarities and differences.
Yes! Sumotori are as strong as powerlifers, with extra pading. And a lot of pro sumo are very flexibel. And as quick as charging bulls. Look at the "skinny guys" in this vid. Still muscular. 💪 Did the sumo crew grow? Much more people this time. 😊
When I saw the small guy, I understood immediately. That's the body you get when all of your opponents are 2 to 3 times bigger than you, so you have to have. Pure explosive power to protect against to redirect. I have quite a bit more weight on me now. But when I was training regularly. Everybody that I was paired with was twice my weight. And like the only exceptions were people younger than me. So when we went full contact, I had to do a lot more to not be flung around. I learned to do a lot of check kicks (low sidekicks) and for me they were ways to measure distance. I had to evade while at the same time get a feel for the direction their body is going. Some people will use a jab in a similar way. You just kind of have to rely on various techniques that allow you to take control of the direction things are going in. It wouldn't surprise me if that guy does calisthenics or some hybrid. I guess in a way, practicing this martial art requires you to develop that way and to be able to hold your own against people several times bigger than you.
Ive been watching you for awhile now and your genuinely a great UA-camr don't know if you like that term but whatever your awesome and so are your videos hopefully you get the channel growth like you deserve (same for icy Mike hard2hurt)
Wow absolutely fantastic. I never thought Sensei Seth would be such a leader in promoting sumo but I am here for it, these athletes have always deserved so much more respect outside of Japan. Love to see it!
Sumo is important because American Folkstyle Wrestling has a weight limit of 285lbs, so those who want to Wrestle & weigh more can compete in Sumo or other tradition Wrestling styles without weight limits instead.
Its just like when someone who knows nothing about BJJ or Wrestling, they think its goofy nonsense. If you have no idea what youre watching it looks ridiculous. Same thing happens with sumo, if you study it a bit you start to see whats going on. Its a sweet martial art.
Became a Sumo fan like a year ago, and i fucking love it now. But it was hard to find initially, i know this isn't a hardcore sumo vid but i do think it's important to have videos like this exposing people and piqueing (is that a word?) Interests
Great video Seth... speaking of grappling - you gotta tell me if you and Craig Jones were siblings separated at birth destined to dominate the martial arts world - with you becoming the striker and he becoming the grappler - your philosophies bound to collide with Icy Mike refereeing and the fate of the UA-cam martial arts scene hanging in the balance.
Judo will help you get a "feel" for people pushing into you , which can translate into doing Sumo throws. That being said our club has several members with no martial arts background that do well in Sumo. Learning sumo without having to unlearn another martial art's way of doing something is probably the best way to go.
@@ohayosumodayton1226 Absolutely. We get guys with wrestling backgrounds who want to throw people everywhere. They get a real eye opening at the tachiai. We keep telling them more sumo less wrestling.

That flexibility part was wild! Flexibility is really important on sumo. I saw a match where the loser ended up doing the splits, but he tore a muscle in his groin when it happened. 😰 When you have a 300+ pound man falling on you, that flexibility is gonna be invaluable.

Some all-you-can-eat restaurants ban such sport clubs because they gettin' broke letting them in.
