Substitutionary Atonement is not the same as Penal Substitution. Sub Atonement = Jesus died for us. Penal Sub = Christ punished in our place. The latter is a type of sub atonement but it is not the only one.
No price was paid for sin, the wages of sin is death, but Jesus knew no sin only death. Jesus just changed the covenant of Moses to allow repentance and judgement.

So what are they trying to say, that what Jesus did for all of mankind was merely a substitute for our sins? Sorta like a substitute teacher grading test in place of the Real teacher?
Jesus did not sin but he did die, he was raised so he defeated death, his death allowed the covenant of Moses to change. Jesus can take away death not sin. I have a Ytube video series called 'Myths in so-called Christianity', atonement comes by a profession of faith.

He did not take away sin he had not committed, but redeemed himself as a man sanctified in his covenant made due to his death, there was no atonement of sins at the Cross, but because he was perfect he could justly go to heaven. For true believers who have the Spirit, Jesus is the way because he did not sin, however our atonement is guaranteed in his covenant as our past are forgiven at baptism into his church, but if we sin by lack of faith then we break the covenant.
