15:55 there actually is a racing series featuring electric vehicles - aptly named "Formula E". Hasn't existed for very long, first season was in 2014. Not quite as popular as Formula 1, but there is no telling how this is changing as electric vehicles are becoming more important in real life.

actually electric cars are more wasteful than combustion engines. the production of the batteries is very wasteful and polluting + the energy used for these cars mainly stems from coal power plants and gas power plants. in the mean time we develop efuels which will make combustion cars go netzero in terms of co2 so fuck electric cars
The teams budget is $140 million ,that's for everything like staff wages and development, literally everything.
Where as it's $15 million to build the car on its own.

Note: a Formula 1 car engine is known as a power unit. It is hybrid engine, meaning it has a normal F1 v6 engine with an MGU-K and an MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit-Kenitic and Motor Generator Unit-Heat). These two forms the energy recovery system or ERS. You can Google how they all works. So the F1 engine or power unit is very very complex.
Trust me when I say the budget for your Department of Defence is over $1 trillion. Even here in the UK it is in the many billions of £. OH and that $140 million cap is for everything not just for the cars.
The electric FIA race series will be Formula E. It's more about efficiency than maximum speed.

Driving was like bumper cars, the cars sounded awful, the tracks were shit, and the format was absurd.

The fact that the cars are destroyed in the event of a collision is a very important factor for the safety of the pilot.
The kinetic force of the impacts is so high that it would disintegrate the pilot… this way, instead. it is dissipates destroying the car's structure.

F1 won't ever go electric - they're hybrids and going towards using biofuels (these are being heavily developed by the likes of Porche and give 0 carbon emissions) Loving the F1 reactions!

Yes! Red Bull do manufacture their own car but they used differrent engines manufactured by other companies until 2022 they manufacture their own engine and actually won the both championships.They recently announced that for 2026 and onwards they are going to use a engine manufactured by Ford.
actually they use Honda engines at the moment, just rebranded as "Honda Red Bull Powertrains" until 2026 where they will be making their own engines and Ford is providing backing and most likely the electronic parts

This video came to mind as I was watching. A really good follow-up to what goes on behind the scenes to keep F1 rolling.
I must confess that as a European, I find some of the questions asked by US Americans slightly stupid. This also applies to the question "What is Formula 1?"
It can't be that I, as a viewer, especially on this channel, keep coming across questions like that. It seems to me that many US Americans really do live in their very own, American world.
By the way, the next US Grand Prix - a Formula 1 race - will take place on October 22 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin in the US state of Texas.
When you see the cars as you say explode it looks very scary but they are designed to brake apart like that so it absorbs the energy of the impact and doesn’t go into the driver where the driver sits is very strong it’s like sitting in a bombproof bath tub
Hi, all teams including Red Bull have to build their own cars, its mandatory.
Exceptional to some parts such as engines are alowed.
To eado, chassis and suspension a limited and certain parts copy is alowed if a team donates it to a other team but this is to help beginning and "low" budget teams.
Top teams mostly design everything themselves becuase they are the ones with the big research facilities like wind tunnels for example.
Formula E is the EV version, all so in the UK nurse's starting salary is 35k, the problem you will find with Auto cars in Europe is finding them, Auto in Europe is as common as stick shift in the US and is only in expensive cars
The cars "explode" like that for safety. They're actually INCREDIBLY strong, but there's just that much energy involved thanks to the high speeds.
It has probably been pointed out before: Automatic is still not the norm in Europe, but it is available. So of course you can drive in Europe if you can't drive stickshift. But when renting a car, you do need to make sure that you are renting one with auto transmission, as the default continues to be stickshift.
This is of course going to change over time as electric cars are becoming more and more the norm - electric cars don't have transmissions at all, so if and when gasoline driven cars die, so will the stickshift.
There are *some* electric cars with transmissions and gearing.
But there's a lot less need for them then with ICE cars.

And as far as rental cars are concerned - that will happen much faster. At least in the EU, less than 20 years from now finding a gasoline car for rent will be harder than finding a stickshift car for rent in the USA is today.

Even in europe manual shifters become less and less common... many of the young generation opt to not even learn manual shift driving.

One thing F1 cars are not naturally aspirated, they are turbo charged according to the current engine regulations.
The number of laps depend on the length of the race track i.e Monaco being the shortest has 78 laps but Spa in Belguim (The greatest circuit) has 44 laps. Formula 1 struggled in The US until the last few years but now its really taking off helped by Netflix`s Drive to survive Program that shows behind the scenes footage etc. The more you learn about F1 the more it will blow your mind.
A F1 race is always somewhere near 300 km in length

and yes and no for the struggles in US, they used to do alright there for many years until the Tyre war saga coming to a really dangerous end in the Indianapolis 500 which was so bad that F1 has barely raced on any US track apart from the Circuit of the Americas, until last year when we got Miami (the track sucks sorry to say) and this year when we will have Circuit of the Americas, Miami, and Vegas... yeah we probably wont see any good racing in 2 out of 3 of those tracks..

@@fep_ptcp883 correct. monaco's gp length is.. 260KM length ((taking into consideration that a gp cannot be longer than 2 hours and ... Monaco being the slowest grand prix... :)
F1 cars are NOT natural aspirated, they are small turbocharged engines plus an electric engine (Hybrid). Mainly the electric engine is only used to boost for some short period to boost the power for e.g. overtaking actions.
I couldnt get my head around how you said your expected salary for being a nurse is $70-100k (£58,000-83,000) thats ridiculous. here in the UK junior/graduate doctors get around £29,000 ($34,000) sometimes less if outside London...

Because of this in Italy or UK its as sacred as football, in the rest of Europe is a quite popular sport and in the rest of the world was unknown until now.

No, stick shift is faster at getting up to speed in the first place for a experienced driver, although the advantage is shrinking as automatics are getting better.
For your average Joe automatic has already been faster for a while as the people designing them already knows a *lot* more about what's optimal then what *you* do.

The reason the extremities of the cars come apart quite easily in an accident is because they're designed to, and also because they're built with a very low factor of safety to keep the weight as low as possible whilst still performing their function.
Average car structural components will have factors of safety of 2 or more. So it takes 2 times the load the component is expected to see for it to fail. F1 will have factors of safety of like 1.1. This keeps the weight down, but also means that even minor accidents can easily destroy them.

i will answer u a few questions :) Each Race has different amount of laps based on the Track, the maximum time for a race is 2h, mostly its about 1,5h per race.The 140 mio are not the Car its for all the research and development and stuff like that. on the rearwing u have DRS (Drag Reduction System) i s a driver 1 second or less behind a other on he can use DRS and open the wing for less downforce on the straight and close it for more downforce in the corners. The padel shift thing is actualy a semi automatic gerabox mostly in sports cars or race cars. The engine of a F1 car today is not more naturally, they use a 1,6 l v6 Turbo Hybrid engine with about 1000hp and these cars have 200 sensors on it to have all the data they need. The last thing is the Electric stuff, F1 will not go full elecrtic they have a special fuel wich is made with bio fuel, there is a Formula serie called Formula E and these cars are full electric. i hope it will help u a bit more understand F1 ^^

Hello from Switzerland, when considering the cost of a car, don't just consider the pure production costs, but also the development costs. The vehicles are state-of-the-art for certain components, which causes corresponding development costs, and there are also various ancillary costs. There are usually 2-3 updates per season, which doesn't make it cheaper either.
And no, it's not just about entertainment, it's also about research and development for future production vehicles.
As far as the tires are concerned, it can be said that everyone has the same tires and can choose between different degrees of hardness (each car has to use 2 different hardness sets of tires for each race).
Incidentally, Red Bull is a complete rarity in F1, the company as such has nothing to do with motorsport, neither with the manufacture nor production of any cars, but they still run 2 teams (Rad Bull & Toro Rosso). Sure, the company is more concerned with advertising/marketing/presence of the brand; but apparently the concept works and the successes are there.
Formula 1 in electric is currently equivalent to Formula E, which consists of very similar vehicles with electric drives.
People go for electric cars, not because the cars are better for driving, but because burning fuel is bad for the earth and the climate. With electricity the power may come from a wind/solar/water plant

Btw number of laps varies. They have to do a certain distance, so number of laps depends on the length of the track. Also the whole race cannot go over 2 hours. So if there are delays like a bad crash or rain, they may have to end the race early if they're about to go over the 2 hour limit. Whoever finishes in the lead at the end of time (instead of the given number of laps) wins the race.
21:00 Most F1 cars nowadays are hybrid. They have an Electric motor they can "charge" during the race to get a speed boost whenever they need it.
The teams aren't in it for the money. At least.. not directly. Since a company like RedBull uses it mainly as marketing for their brand.
The reason cars break so easily is because the intire car is under so much air pressure that just a little more pressure can break it, you can see in demonstrations in the garage that they tried hitting is with a hammer and it didn't budg but put it on track and it can break easily
Sidefact about the future of gasoline-engine cars and electric cars. The European Parliament decided, that from 2035 onwards, only emission-free cars will be registered in the EU.
Maybe in 12 years E-Cars would be much more affordable than today.
By the way don't underestimate the insane acceleration of E-Cars. 😉
For example the E-Car "McMurtry Speirling" can speed up from 0 km/h to 100 km/h (60mph) in 1.4 sceonds.

The point of electric cars is not to save money (which they do) or get increased mileage, it is that they don't pump toxic gasses out of your tail pipe directly into your towns air for you and your neighbours to breath. If the cost and mileage is the same then there is no point in driving petrol, diesel or hybrid cars.
You should really react to the F1 2021 season battle for the championship, in my opinion the best season I have ever seen and possibly the best one in history.
Ev only household here but rearly need to charge in public have battary storage and solar PV so for £50 a month I cook, heat and run my house and power 3 EVs used to spend £120 a month on petrol for 1 of my old cars, yes system was expensive (26k) in 2018 but has half payed for itself allready and with current prices will fully pay for itself in 2026, so for some they are well worth it would love to see your reaction to my 1st EV the Renault Twizy, still have it 10 years after I bought it

its easy to think F1 cars are fragile because how much they brake in crashes, but consider the speeds at wich they crash, at those same speeds street cars would become unrecognizable metal mush.
Automatic cars are quite popular across Europe and the UK, so no, you don't have to learn to use a manual gearbox, but it's still a good idea, just for the experience.
Not so popular depending on the country. If you want to rent a cheap small car you will have problems getting one with automatic. And it will probably be more expensive. But E-cars and hybrids start to change the situation even here.
@Markalola 70% of cars in the UK are manual. The 30% of cars that are automatic tend to be bigger luxury cars.
You do get smaller hatchback cars with auto boxes but they're not very common.
It's much easier if you can drive a manual car if you want to drive in the UK.
@@paulfletcher3998 Automatic cars are still fairly easy to get. This isn't the 90s anymore. While manual transmission is still the norm in the UK and the rest of Europe auto cars are becoming more and more common (even in non luxury cars). Every car manufacture has an auto option. Plus every hybrid and EV is an "automatic". A visitor from the US can easily rent an auto car in the UK as you'd be hard pressed to find a car rental company that doesn't give you an option.
The F1 is high end in therms of technology, them is use in daily cars - Something Europe invented to make their car industry on the best of the world

Mercedes is big to "The Mercedes-Benz Group's marques are Mercedes-Benz for cars and vans (including Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach) and Smart. It has shares in other vehicle manufactures such as Daimler Truck, Denza, BAIC Motor and Aston Martin etc :)

Just the latest in a long line of incremental gains our species has made as a result of the tippy top of motorsport.
F1 helped build the modern world. F1 will continue to make the world a better place. Next up, net-zero fuels, because electric cars isn't as green as the hype would suggest.
just one correction: when you said one teams budget was equivalent to your military budget, unfortunately not even close:
1 F1 team was 400 millions, while your military last year wasted 700 Billions. almost 2000 times more.
Little bit of extra info but if memory serves correctly, in 2026 F1 will shift to 100% sustainable fuels so in a way, F1 is going their own route that isn't electric.
the cars arent cheap cuz they fall apart. they are made to do that. When they fall apart this remove some of the car's kinetic energy reducing the impact on the driver MOST TIMES SAVING THEIR LIVES.

The F1 cars are so expensive due to the fact the cockpit and most of the car is made for carbon fiber and. The seat is custom made for the driver the car can protects the driver in a smash up hitting speeds of over 160mph. + Enabling the driver to walk away after a crash
It was kind of popular in America in around the 2000s when they raced at Indianapolis and in 1970-1980s when they raced in Vegas and Long Beach and etc. Now they are trying to get more fans in the US by bringing in 3 races: Miami, Texas, and Vegas, with Vegas being the newest in 2023. Another way to get more people interested is the Netflix show Drive To Survive, which is basically Formula 1 simplified. I wouldn’t recommend watching it though, because they are making it seem like the teams and drivers have these cutthroat rivalries, which they dont. Also, now that Logan Sargeant is racing in F1, fams would probably root for him.
140 million dollars is the maximum teams are allowed to spend (driver salaries excluded). Few seasons prior to that rule some teams sometimes spent triple that (for example Mercedes)
PS: F1 engines are no longer naturally aspirated. Turbo engines are in use since 2009. And essentialy hybrid is in use for the past several seasons with ERS (MGU-K and MGU-H) esentially bing a hybrid add-on to the ICE.
Like NFL or NBA teams, F1 teams are funded by their owners and that's not some government, but some company (like Red Bull or Mercedes) or some private person.
Btw, some of the "poorer" teams are also funded by their drivers. The best drivers get paid millions for driving, but if you are not along the best but still want to race F1, you may buy yourself an F1 cockpit, if you happen to be a millionaire. Not a very competitive one, so you will certainly not be racing for the title (and be lucky to even finish most races, let alone high enough to earn points) - but I guess that doesn't matter if you are very rich and very much into motor racing.

The amount of laps in every race depends on how long the track is, a shorter track obviously means more laps and vice versa.
There is a series allready for electric formula cars, it is called Formula E.

There has been an American Grand Prix for decades; at the beginning, only Americans competed in it, and with their own cars that were different to Formula 1.
When the F1 'Circus' truly went world-wide things changed.
There are now three Grands Prix in the Northern American Continent, and probably another in Canada, it varies.
There used to be one in South Africa, but that went away with sanctions against apartheid many years ago.

I definitely recommend next doing a reaction to formula E. I’m really into both of them now but in the near future FE is definitely the way to go. Especially with the version three model that has just recently come out on the racing circuit.
Racing with electric cars regardless would probably help by pushing battery and cooling tech forward to benefit "normal" electric cars. So that would probably by itself be a good thing. Acceleration if done right is down right much better with electric cars as well so that would also add to the exitements to F1 cars as well. There is Formula E already, check that out.
Making the F1 cars electric wouldnt improve the excitement at all, a lot of the fun is in the sound, a little bit more of acceleration isnt gonna make it, also it would make the cars far heavier, which would slow them down
There is no car "searies" faster than F1. They have multiple engieners just to change the tires. Now, over 4 seconds to change all the 4 tires is considered so bad and ridicoulus. They have so many scientists and engeners... it is insane. They all even have their own meteo stations with radars and stuff.... insane ! But yes, a lot of the thecnology in your cars come from F1. (sorry for my english, just learning)

The teams are all working with fuel companies to develop and use more biofuels, so it's more sustainable, and they are aiming for Net Zero emissions in 2030.
The tires are also getting improved every year. new compounds of rubber are designed, making them not only more durable, but to improve grip and control and longevity.

The big issue is not what fuel the cars use as its not that much, there only 1.6L engines, the logistics about travelling with all the cars trucks and planes is the real issue.

Electric cars make a lot of sense IF you have enough electricity, which currently, we do NOT. Also they need to get a lot more accessible in price and in repair bills. Plus they need to work on making them more secure in case of fire. Because without electricity, you are stuck in a burning car if there is a crash. And it would be great if it does not burn down your garage and house over night.
