This is how my husband talks to me. He doesn't value me but I am reminded to be responsible for my own happiness and not relying on him for it.

Mom & Daughter - I wish no one ever experienced anyone speaking like this to them. It is very hurtful, isn't it? :( We must carefully weigh what others say to us and discern, with the help of the Bible and God's Spirit, whether what people say aligns with God's Word and truth or not. And if it does not, we don't need to absorb it. I have a video about insults that may be a blessing. And some posts on my blog that may be a blessing. peacefulwife.com/?s=critical
Our contentment and ultimate identity must come from Jesus, yes. Not from imperfect people.
A resource that may be a blessing is Nina Roesner's eCourse Becoming a Woman of Strength and Dignity. It's very good for wives in such a situation to find healing and wisdom for themselves and their marriages.

What a good reminder! I have been trying so hard to use my words to build my husband up. I also make an effort not to stifle my praise and appreciation. It is humbling to see how much of an influence I have in his life!

Love that! Thank you so much for sharing. It's easy to not really pay attention to what we say, our tone, or our body language. But when we can be intentional and seek to bless... it is so beautiful.

A big part is to stop excepting negative thoughts about our husbands. Then you will start seeing the good and saying positive things to them easily. Even if it might feel strange at first. I remember when I started putting out dinner for the whole family to eat together it felt very off. Then I overheard my husband telling his friend about it. Since he was happy about it.

    • @AprilCassidy

Yes! When we cultivate negative thoughts against our husbands, we invite the enemy to do a lot of damage in our own minds and hearts and through us. But when we develop the habit of thankfulness and gratitude, we see so many more good things and don't notice the negative as much. (Of course, if a wife is in an abusive or dangerous situation, she may need to reach out for help.)
Yes, changing our habits and approach can feel foreign and awkward at first. It did for me, too. But as we settle into new healthier habits, the new atmosphere begins to feel like home and everyone enjoys it.
Thanks so much for sharing! Blessings!

This was great! I loved watching the skits for each way a wife can behave when interacting with their husband. Hopefully watching this will allow some wives to see ways to be a blessing to their husbands in ways they never have before!!

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I think it can be really powerful to actually see examples. I remember when I was trying to figure out how to stop the wrong things I was doing and I wasn't exactly sure what to replace it with. At least, this may be a starting place. Blessings, sweet sister!

Wow. I needed this. I have felt a lot lately like my husband and I are just too different, got together so young and so many years later are different people…but this helped.

It is our differences that attract us, most often, in the beginning. It's okay that we are different. We can still be a strong team. Blessings!

The first time I watched the skit with the complaining, I cried. The second time I watched I just shut down and tuned out. Now I see from my husband's side.

I think if we had to see ourselves on video, we might be shocked. We can't always see what our actions and attitudes look like from our husband's perspective. For so many years, I couldn't see what I was doing and how much damage I was causing. But maybe some of my skits will help shine a light on our hearts and invite the power of Jesus to help us to heal and change so that we can act in His Spirit and love and we can treat all others, including our husbands with honor that glorifies God. Blessings!

Hey April, my husband and I have been married for two years now. We have been attending a Nazarene church since. I am fairly reformed, but he was raised catholic. This church has surrounded us with such love and my husband has been growing so much there and is now being discipled by the pastor. My husband wants us to join the church but I have reservations due to things I have heard the pastor say regarding being in favor women preachers, support for the Catholic Church as a whole, and the role of wives to their husbands. Apparently some board members were trying to get my husband in leadership but recently found out he is not a member yet. My husband won’t become a member unless I do. I have been feeling very conflicted about this. I want to honor God by submitting to my husband. But I don’t want to dishonor God if I am joining a church that doesn’t align with His Word. Could you please help me or guide me to certain verses, etc? Thank you for your work April!

theM Cooke - Hey! Congratulations on your marriage. Ultimately, a decision like this will be one between you, the Lord, and your husband - and, of course, a matter of much prayer. How about send me a message privately on my blog and I'll respond via email. Blessings! peacefulwife.com/contact-us/
