I thought employers automatically provide short term disability by law. I don't understand why the video says to "consider" it.

Employers in most states aren't required to provide it by law, but many automatically enroll their employees in it at no cost unless they choose to opt out. Only 5 states have laws requiring employers to offer short term disability. Those states are California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Complications from an elective surgery. Surgery is performed but then there is a health development from that which keeps a person off longer than I anticipated. Are you qualified for short term from the complications of the surgery afterwards. Unforeseen health issues created after the surgery that was elective surgery. Other words you elected to have the surgery but you did not foresee or anyone for saw the complications and you become disabled and need more time off. I need some general advice

You should be able to qualify for benefits if you meet all the qualification and you were enrolled in a short-term disability insurance plan ahead of time. To meet short-term disability qualifications, you need to have a qualifying medical condition that's severe enough to prevent the you from working for a limited period, requires on-going care by a doctor until you recover, and the medical condition can't be related to your work environment or job-related responsibilities. The fact that your health issue manifested from a surgery you elected to have doesn't matter. They only need to know about the actual health issue (diagnosis) that is preventing you from being able to do your job. How or why you got it is irrelevant.
