Follow up comment to my earlier post: I used the Canon Pro Print and Layout for my wife’s watercolor images to print on the Pro-1000. Absolutely unbelievable difference. I am no longer in printer depression! It’s so easy to make minor adjustments using the color management module to tone down magenta, decrease brightness, etc. I love the pattern print module. The overlying haze from lightroom is gone, meaning that contrast and black point compensation is working. You did not save my marriage - that’s stable after 49 years, but you did restore a sense of mastery in color managment and producing prints that are acceptable to my wife. When a perfectionist says, “that’s pretty good” I take that as a high complement. Many, many thanks!!!
Glyn, this is such a great and informative video. Thanks so much!
You're welcome ... great to hear it's useful
Glyn, great presentation of the topic. Thanks!
Glyn, great information in this video. I have a Canon PRO-200. I did a test comparing prints from Lightroom Classic and Canon's Professional Print & Layout using a Plus Semi-gloss photo paper on photo with a lot of contrast. In PP&L I ticked-on "Use contrast reproduction" under Print Quality. The difference is immediately noticeable with PP&L providing the better screen-matching and better looking print. I've had discussions with professional and enthusiast photographers about printing using Photoshop/LRC or the printer manufacturer's software. It was about a 60/40 split to use PS/LR. It makes sense to me to use the manufacture's software because they can better understand the underpinnings of their printers and are writing software for a limited number and similar devices. I was going back and forth on the subject and now I intend to primarily use PP&L as my preferred printing software. Thanks again for the informative video that directed me to do an informed comparison.
Glyn, excellent job covering many of the problems that come up when printing! I'm in the ProPhoto RGB workflow camp and have been getting great results printing to an Epson SC P800. But, if somebody switched all my apps to use Adobe RGB, I probably wouldn't notice anything.
Oh my gosh! I love your info Glen! Congrats to Steven too, I'm just learning macro and Steven's UA-cam home is one of my go to sites for learning macro. I saw when he posted the damsel fly image, also when it was featured on the Platipod site and now here he is on my favorite, your UA-cam as well. I guess I have some pretty good tastes after all.❤
Thanks so muchf or looking and for thr kind words ... means a lot
Thank you so much!
Outstanding demonstration and presentation! Thank you so much. I will certainly try the Canon software on my Pro 300.
A superb video, Glyn, and exactly what I needed. Thank you very much.
Glad to hear it’s useful Phil 👍🏻
Just caught up with your video Glyn........brilliant. So much information, but most important is that I now know " It's Not Me "
That's great to hear ... 👍🏻
What a wonderful video. This is absolutely nuts. Thank you for that. Only thing I would wish is, that there would be a shorter version of it with timestamps for coming back to this and looking up things in the future.
No worries ... I'll add time stamps in 👍🏻
Thanks Glyn for a great presentation on in-house printing and settings.
You're more than welcome
@@glyndewis Hi Glyn, after I watched your print test I checked my Canon Pro print app. There is now an updated version to include Photoshop 24. I have not yet test this version.
Cheers
Thanks Glyn. I have never been happy with printing from Lightroom. I shall try the Epson software now to see if there is a difference.
Hi Glyn, great video...did you know both Photoshop and Lightroom have the ability to show the out of gamut colours and view a simulation of the image printed on the chosen paper. That's where you will see the biggest change to the colours and adjust the image before printing.
Great video Glyn.
Thanks
I’m really struggling to color match my wife’s watercolor images on print, so this is very helpful. I’ll try the Canon software for my pro1000. Thx!!!
👍🏻
Awesome Glyn thank you very much. Have you tried matching the photoshop print to the variations from the canon software then adjust the CMY in the opposite direction on photoshop ie Canon says -10C -10M +4Y gives the Photoshop result so +10C +10M -4Y on photoshop might match the canon correct colour print. If the photoshop difference is universal across all prints then you would know the difference to dial in for each print.
A real eye-opener for me. Indeed i nearly stopped printing myself because i never get satisfactory results. So my Epson stylus Pro 3880 is mainly gathering dust. I therefor REALLY hope you can get results with your upcoming Epson and the software you get to accomplish results like shown here. Please do share your knowledge and experiences with the Epson!
I'll second this. I can't even figure out what, if any, software Epson provides for direct printing that is appropriate for "pros," meaning that it gives you full control. I can only find software for doing "fun layouts" and such. In my case, it's for printing with an SC P600.
Great stuff- thanks!
Glad you liked it ... thanks for watching
Fabulous information , thank you. Is the process the same for black and white printing?
Hi Jeff … Yes indeed, exactly the same 👍🏻
Hi Glyn , great video , received my icc profiles from Fotospeed for their papers 18 months ago and with your comment about os updates - I am now questioning if I should resend test sheets for updated profiles ?
Thnaks for that. Re the ICC profiles ... that wouldn't be a bad idea 👍🏻
Hey, first of all.. thank you for all the great informative knowledge sharing.
I have the * symbol and no matter what I try I can't match the colors. What am I doing wrong?
I was stunned by the results shown in this GREAT video! I immediately downloaded the Epson Print Layout software hoping it would have a similar (and significant) improvement over printing from LrC. Unfortunately, it supports only the new Epson "P" printers not my Epson 3880 Pro. ARGH! I'm wondering if QImage on a 3880 is significantly better than LrC. Any thoughts or experience?
Great music😊
Great video - you mentioned not using a wireless connection to the printer. I wonder if you could expand on this please
One of the main reasons is the chance of drying lines where the printer pauses becuase of buffering and then restarts. During that pause, the ink dries so when the printer carries on this can cause an obvious line. Also wireless on a Mac can mean using AirPrint and this is a definite no-no becuase it doesn't access the whole printer driver and prints look VERY different to what they should be.
@@glyndewis Thanks for that, also Air Print doesn't give you the options for all paper types....as I discovered before uninstalling it
I just wish that the "Canon Pro Print" add-on worked with my Pixma Pro-1 A3+ 12-ink printer. The printer is superb, but I have exactly the same problem with printing vivid red poppies, they print orange instead of the true-to-life red. Frustrating
Hi Glyn,
Out of interest, what made you choose Permajet over other papers such as Fotospeed?
Thank you
Always been very happy with the Permajet Papers but also the customer service. Great rnage of papers too with the new Heritage Range.
Thanks for replying and giving your insight.
The biggest problem i have with printing is getting the exposure right.. Most of my images come out too dark even with soft proofing on
100% that is because the luminosity value you have your display calibrated to, is too high. So often you hear to use values of 80 - 120 candela. For me that always produced dark prints so I changed to 60 and now they’re perfect.
Sounds good to me and I'm partially deaf.😊
Keep getting error message when trying to use Print Studio Pro on Mac. Any suggestions any one? Using Mac
You mention qimage. But it turns out there are two apps Qimage ultimage and Qimage One. Seem to be different companies, but both for printing. WHich one were you referring to? I'm printing on an Epson printer, so the Canon SW is not helpful so looking for another alternative.
Yeah I mention that in the video … QImage for Mac , QImage Ultimate for windows
In full colour
Yes all ok
I do not recall having to jump thru as many hoops from my dark room days (I was formally schooled in photography) as I do for making a digital print. I feel digital printing is in dire need of AI or some cleaning up. Your Canon print software appears to be the most simple and intuitive in that regard - but still a degree in software engineering would be handy (exagerating a bit on that).
To be honest it\s pretty straightforwed once you have the basics ... i think the first few times it can seem a lot but then so did dark room delveoping with trays, chemicals, drying times etc ...
This is why photographers freak out whenever a new operating system update is released that breaks Canon’s software, and then Canon drags their heels providing an update. Wish that wasn’t true, but I’ve been burned enough times to wait a few months before upgrading to ensure Canon’s software doesn’t break.
Soft proofing ?
Yes ... in Lightroom
@@glyndewis also available in photoshop too, isn’t that the way the print industry checks what they are going to get out of the printer ?
Hi glyn
