The "same as it ever was" theme is PERFECTLY alluded to in the bass line. What really bends your ear is that through the verses and chorus's the bassline does not change one bit. It supports the I in the verses and inverted it supports the V in the choruses. I'm sure that is a Brian Eno move and it's just pure absolute genius!!

This is one of those songs that you hear when you're young.
    You like it.
    You may love it.
    It's catchy.
But then someday you get a little older and you're listening to it one day and you realize just how incredible this song is.
And then you start watching more Talking Heads stuff and then you realize that you were right there in the 80s when this dropped.
And you realize that you didn't fully appreciate them.
And you realize that it's just because you're old and stuff means different things to you and that your perspective shifts greatly across your life.
Then you just sit back and ponder life.
    I was there.
Then I was in another place.
    Then I was somewhere else.
    Now I'm here.
    Where will I be next?
    Where will I be next?
    Thanks, Talking Heads.
    You beautiful artists.

I don't think this song is about midlife crises. You can be any age and realize the absurd reality the vast majority of us have been forced into since probably the mid 20th century. Just utterly thoughtless and selfish, placated with sugary meals and entertainment. Joy redefined as acquiring a bigger TV or car or house. Made to believe life is only about pursuing short term joys and endless comfort.

It is. It’s about the days go by, water flowing underground, Alston! You know, those who are proud of Carlisle. But they’re daft, the river is holy to horses. Yep. It’s holy to a horse. But they’re not all loyal. I don’t know. Above ground rages a terrible fire, and that man was a parrot.

A small farmhouse with a big porch overlooking a beautiful flowing river.
I was 16 when this dropped and I had it on vinyl and 8 track. I listened to this song hundreds if not thousand times back then.
40 years later and listening to it after a long time,……I realize it’s my life’s anthem and the fact that I just bought a “shack” on a river to watch the water flow by is not lost on me for one minute.

    And you may find yourself
    Living in a shotgun shack
    And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
    And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
    With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
    How did I get here?
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
    And you may ask yourself
    How do I work this?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where is that large automobile?

Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
    Water dissolving and water removing
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Dixit David Byrne about the lyrical inspiration behind this piece : “Most of the words in ‘Once in a Lifetime’ [1980] come from evangelists I recorded off the radio while taking notes and picking up phrases I thought were interesting directions. Maybe I’m fascinated with the middle class because it seems so different from my life, so distant from what I do. I can’t imagine living like that.”
A myriad of musicians cite “Once in a Lifetime” as ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER RECORDED❗️
    Among those people :
Charlotte Church, who named it the first song she fell in love with : “The first time I heard it, my mind was blown. There’s magic in that song. I think David Byrne is an absolute G.”
Nick Fieldman of Wang Chung, who loves the “almost randomly cacophonous keyboard burblings, the wonderful bass line and rhythm section groove and David Byrne’s slightly preacher-like vocals.”
Glen Balard,, who produced and co-wrote hits for the likes of Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews and Aerosmith, stated : “That song can’t be touched. I listen to it like once a month because everything about it is so perfect.”
    A MASTERPIECE BY A MASTERMIND‼️ 💎🎶💎

I love this song but never knew the name. I remember dancing to this song and shaking my head wild, lol.😱 So, I was left alone on the dance floor, and remember Billie Idol's song, "Dancing by Myself?" He encouraged me to just to do that. 😉

Often when I listen to music, I will focus on different parts of a song.
This bass line is the same four notes, all the way through, never changes.
But all the other instruments around the bass give the feeling it's a changing bass line.
    Blows my mind.

Ok so I’ve always liked the outro sure but today I was in a mall-like place with that part of the song playing and it just struck me… that’s mindblowingly good… like imagine if they decided not to go with that outro/did something else. I played the outro over and over on the way home… I’m in tears. How is that sound being made? Is it feedback mixed with a synth? The outro elevates this song from a truly excellent song to masterpiece.
