I grew up with the original and i honestly loved the remake. Its one of those things that the internet dogpiled on from the first trailer and the group-think made it impossible for anyone to say anything nice about the game. They associated it with "mobile game" graphics when people were getting reallybsalty about phine gaming threatening thie consoles (at learmst in their minds). But honstly the art style just matches the original art and sculpted models thst can be found in the SNES manual. I thought the game looked great and it had a a lot of quality of life improvements over the original. Its nice to see someone play this one first without the nostalgia glasses and "old man yelling at cloud" energy just giving it a fair shake. I do think the Trials of Mana remake did a much better job, but this one was great as well.
Hey, what's up Gen!? Hope all is well. I played the SNES version of Secret of Mana back in the day, and I've also played through the Remake. I enjoyed them both quite a bit. My favorite thing was always checking out the new weapon charge attacks with each upgrade.
I've been considering getting a new game for my PS4 and I've also thought about playing the original Secret of Mana on SNES. I think you've sold me on this version! :)
I have played the original first as it was one of the few RPGs that was on the SNES and while the remake did have bug issues(I encountered a bug on the Vita version which froze my device and forced me to reboot it... three times) I did enjoy the game a bit. Trophy list is short but my god the grind is real. :( If you haven't played any other Mana games yet, I strongly recommend the Trials of Mana 3D remake. It's really great.
Played this version too though on Vita (haven't played SNES version yet...probably should sooner or later...maybe the first 3 games in 1 that released on Switch). Story's fairly decent, combat's...probably below average if I'm being honest (some aspects felt far too slow, especially with the gauge with the % under your character), areas could be annoying at times, and a few other nitpicks such as not liking the camera angle and a few others. Overall it's a decent to good game though I think I'd probably prefer playing the OG more with this camera PoV Imo the game needed a more Trials of Mana style remake if anything in terms of combat and camera PoV. Granted the game that needs a far more extensive work with its remake would be the first game as Adventures of Mana was not particularly fun imo (not surprising as it was mobile originally) and not just combat wise but the maps were annoying with how they were designed (not sure if they tried to 1 to 1 remake it like Trials but if they did they shouldn't have done so and just remade it with new map layouts but putting the locations in roughly the same place). On top of that the story could use quite a bit of a rework with more side quests, plot points and dialogue with npcs, maybe give actual party members/options to save some characters, etc. I definitely probably would only recommend the OG game or the first remake (Adventures on vita/mobile was 3rd...2nd actually also lets you play as the swordsman and heroine and not just the swordsman apparently...never played that version though and think it's on GBA or some other older console so finding a copy may be hard or you may need to set off to the high seas to find it I guess...also can't remember if it was localized or not so you may need to find a fan sub as well). Now for Secret and Trials and maybe even Visions based off the demo they really need better dialogue writing and voice acting direction (and it's not like these VAs are bad, I've heard them do good work in the past so it's probably the VA director not directing them right). Right now I'm finishing up Falcom's The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak (on finale chapter and halfway done the final day which leads into the final dungeon) and hoping to get it done before Thursday as Visions of Mana releases then (hopefully its good...the demo was OK, could've been a bit better with combat though...we'll see I guess...I did debate on skipping it though as the PS4 was digital only and that ticked me off a bit (if they're gonna release it on the platform make it available both digitally and physically and not just one way or not at all...especially as they have physical for PS5 (and maybe Xbox...is it coming to Xbox?) so it's not like they didn't spend cash on discs anyway. Granted I actually wanted it on Switch for the portability but of course no Switch version even though the console likely can run it as the PS4 runs games like Tales of Arise, Dragon Quest 11, FFVII R part 1, FF XV, and many other higher budget/graphical quality games just fine and they're likely far more intense on the PS4 than Visions will be)).
I used to play the Snes and Remake versions with my brother all the time years ago. Never beat it myself though. The Snes version is definitely worth trying at least once though! My favorite Mana game is Legend of Mana, I recommend it if you want more Mana. You got the Platinum in this? That's impressive if you did, some of those rare item drops are insane. XD
The remake's a banger! Especially on PS5 it runs with zero hiccups. I really like the original, and the remake actually improves some minor issues the original had with combat. Whiny entitled babies made a stink when this came out, and it's a crime this game didn't get the attention it deserved. Total hidden gem!
I played it on PS4 at launch and I only "whined" because the game would crash and need to restart about every 30 minutes. Patches fixed this later and I would have had way less complaints if I played it after.
@@262mad well that's a valid complaint. I can get behind that. What I'm referring to are the turds who didn't even play it, saying it looks like a "PS2 game", and that it ruined their childhoods. Whack jobs.
Are you familiar with PrimalLiquid, famous for brutal challenge runs and his 'overpowered' series? You sound like you have similar accents so just curious if y'all from the same area.
I actually Prefer the SNES game sure the remake has AUTO saves but some area's like the Haunted forest in the remake those bow monster users at lv 10 with ALL of the Gaia's Navel Armors equipped will still KILL you in the remake IN 1 hit.
@@GenesisVII unfortunately he's right. Mobile phone graphics, some great and many super weird remixed music. And no, it's not about every Mana-fan hating on remakes cause the Trials of Mana-remake is very much loved. Still happy you enjoyed SoM! It's probably my favourite game of my life.
Has anyone actually played the Remake before the OG? Or is that just me?
Don't forget to LIKE the video! It really helps!!
The remake isn’t bad, but maaaaaan they did the music dirty. The original had one of the best OST’s of all time.
Yup
I loved the secret of mana remake 😊
You need to cast examine on the orb and it tells you what element triggers the orb to go off.

All is good! Hope you are also doing well! Yeah I think I need to dive into the OG at some stage!
I'm having such a hard time deciding if I want to play this remake next. Thanks for making the review.
No worries!
Yes, the minimap shows the original background from the snes ;)

I enjoyed my time with it, not really any issues at all!

I played the SNES port of from the Collection of Mana on the Switch and really enjoyed it. Wouldn't mind giving the remake a go.
I've not actually played either but they are low down on my wish list. So so many games, so little time!
I was planning on starting this game in a few days after I beat sea of stars

Yeah I know Primal haha, met him a few times now. He's a great dude, we're both from UK so that might be it lol
Lol yes, that was my first question. I feel the original SNES version is best.
I played the remake as well so I have no nostalgia and didn't think the game was worth the hype. I enjoyed trials of mana a lot more.

It was meant to be played multiplayer but you played it solo? 😭
I read on the back it was multiplayer but thought nothing to it haha
LMAOOOOO! Why would you play the remake over the SNES version?
I think I explained it in the first 30 seconds of the video!
@@GenesisVII I Know I was only being cheeky since you said you could see your comment section saying exactly that

Didn't even like the original. Both are trash😊
I've only played a mana demo forgot which one but always coming here for positive JRPG news 🗞️.
