- I get a very rare opportunity at the Dewsbury bus museum open day to ride a very rare Guy Wolfrunian, with a Gardiner engine. These buses were way ahead of there time when new, though there was some minor faults which brought them down (which was a pure tragedy). ©️SB #guywolfrunian #gardinerengine #classicbus
Purrs along smoothly. So glad it was preserved.
Ah, that Gardiner sound; associated with many a type of bus...the acres of chequer plate and brown painted metal interior, powerful memories!
Oh, the memories!!
Great video! Engine note is nicely recorded, as well as the hiss from air suspension.
The Wulfrunian (there is a typo in your video's title and caption), launched in 1959, was indeed well ahead of its time. It features full air suspension, independent front suspension, all-round disc brake, as well as the Cave-Browne-Cave cooling system which is integrated with the saloon heating (that's why there is no radiator grille like other front-engined bus).
The front-mounted Gardner (another typo in your caption) engine not only makes the cab narrow and cramped, but also put a lot of weight on the front axle. The components and tyres of the front axle suffered a lot from that, and West Riding had to remove a few seats in the front section of the upper saloon to lighten the front axle's load.
Unfortunately we can’t see the driver operating the controls. The museum guy is in the prime seat ☹️
Roarty Gardner 6LX with a gorgeous backing vocal and hot shifting will f--k the box up, Guy over egged the pudding with the Wulfrunian, too tecchy , Bus operators want simplicity .
Wow, a Wulfrunian! Quite a nice noise, though you can see how awkward the entry is, being restricted by the wide engine. I think you are being a little over optimistic to say that they had a few 'minor' faults, and no-one else followed the front engine/front entrance route, apart from Ailsa. Thanks for posting
Leyland Victory too.
@@jamesfrench7299 Er no , a Guy Victory Trambus, another front engine double decker from Guy that worked reliably, Kowloon Motor Bus Hong Kong had a fleet of them.
Engine idle is sky high and racing through the gears which if pre select or semi auto you need to take time changing gear.
