First Austria stamps were issued on 1st June 1850. An imperforate issue of 5 different values proved popular amongst philatelists for the different types and shades. In 1854 a different paper was introduced. The postmarks found on these imperforated stamps are also of great interest. Some issues from 1867 - 1871 were for the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire. Collections of both countries can include the same stamps. During the 19th and early 20th Centuries the main area for philatelists is a wide range of perforation gauges and paper types.
