I'm amazed by how many woman rulers Japan has had. It's really outstanding for the time period and seems like things got more sexist as the years went on to the warring states rather than less. I blame Confucius.
@@Linfamy I find it extremely strange however that Heian Japan, at least as described in Genji Monogatari, could arguably be considered more sexist against women than a muslim caliphate. How did this change come to be? In Genji's times it was considered taboo for a woman to even show disapproval at her husband having dozens of affairs (as was the norm), a female noble whose husband had died would not even be obeyed by the servants of the house anymore (they'd all just go find another male lord, leaving their lady to live alone in a decrepit mansion that would often be trashed and robbed as nobody was afraid of the authority of a widowed woman), women were not allowed to look at or even stand up and walk in the presence of men outside of their family, and they were generally regarded as second class citizens meant to do nothing but indulge the desires of powerful men around them. (At least based on tale of Genji - I don't know much of pre-Meji restoration Japanese history) So my question would be what caused Japan to become so much more sexist in the Heian period, or whether we have any written sources describing the life of other women (not imperial concubines or empresses) in the Nara period?
@Vict0r1984 maybe the influence of Confucianism and Chinese culture. But even in the Nara Period men had multiple wives. And I think women had it pretty good compared to other cultures. You couldn't be physically violent to a woman, they were able to own and pass down property, ownership of the house was usually given to the women.
@@Linfamy I just read tale of Genji a few years ago, not history books, so my source is one account that is also a fiction book, but I have read some Chinese history books and I think that at least in comparison to Heian Japan as described in Tale of Genji women had it better in China even during the most neoconfucian dynasties like Ming. In China rape is always treated as this egregious crime bringing dishonor to the family of the woman, whereas in tale of Genji all men in positions of power rape women whenever they want and it's treated as them just having "an affair" or the men "visiting them". Consent is almost never asked of women and their families never even see it as an insult. Compare that to Tang or Song China where even prostitutes could have a patron legally banned from their brothel if said patron had sex with them without consent... Also, what worth is legally passing down and owning property if you can't ever hire servants for that property unless you have a husband and if the servants will only obey your husband anyways? You won't be able to even live decently without a husband, let alone use "your property" for economic activities to make money like a European widowed noble lady could for example. The only way in which I'd say Heian Japan fared better in women's rights than China or Europe is that all noble ladies seemed to have been taught reading and writing, which wasn't the case anywhere else. Also, you said that in Nara men still had multiple wives - that was pretty much always the case in East Asia, but would men also have dozens of affairs (many nonconsensual) with other women that society just accepted like in Heian? Would servants obey/work for a female lord? Are there any English language works you could recommend possibly dealing with this issues in the Nara period?
Not sure about sources that specifically talk about those issues, but there's a pretty good paper on gender issues in Nara Japan. It has a section on marriage. www.jstor.org/stable/25066400
You forgot to mention that Komyo is the first non-imperial woman to bear the title Empress Consort. Prior to her, only women from the imperial clan can become the empress consort. She had a son prior thats how she become the Empress. However the son died, so she used her influence to install her daughter as the Crown Princess to succeed her father. (Despite knowing that as a ruling empress, her daughter could never married)
In the names in the beginning I’m interested at how there is a “missing” character for no (の). For example 藤原仲麻呂. I noticed because the reading for the character 仲 would be “Naka” since that character is followed by 藤原 it would appear that there is a missingno. However if I type it on my phone regardless of the no it will give me the same characters. I’m guessing this was a style back in the day because I don’t think there was hiragana yet and definitely not for names. Secondly back then the last name signified your clan so 藤原仲麻呂 would be Nakamaro of the Fujiwara clan. Again thanks for providing the kanji. Quite interesting.
Yeah, from what I've read, the の is implied. I never see the の on names and yet most books I've read include the の in the romaji. Interesting note: Yes, people only had one name, your "last name" is your clan name. Members of the Imperial Family only had one name, no clan name. In fact, they sometimes "demoted" entire Imperial lines by giving them clan names, making them non-royal (no longer part of the Imperial House).
It's a missingno. I understand what you're saying and it's interesting and all but I'm still laughing because that'd be a damn smart pokemon reference.
Enjoy it while it lasts, because after the Nara Period, there are no more :D There would be 2 more empresses, but by that point, emperors had no power.

Not really , retired yakuza are mostly left alone because they are no longer "players" on the criminal game and nobody could gain anything from messing with them , in fact it is frowned for an active yakuza to mess with a retired one , because they are still under his former clan protection , but the retired one can no longer have anykind of illegal bussiness or asociations to any active or related criminal group
Note that it is very difficult to leave your clan due to obvious reasons , so anyone allowed to retire has gain that privilege.......................if there is personal issues/vendetas and a rival clan member takes action/attack the retired one , he is disavowed by his clan and become a free target or his own clan present him to the retired yakuza clan as a peace offering
