Its an excellent setup. You could consider making some bcb baskets and put it in the last chamber for additional biological filtration and once the bcb baskets matures and develops anoxic bacteria, it will even breakdown the nitrates.
I mean it’s not a thing of absolute beauty but it’s ingenious and the fact it’s completely DIY, makes it extremely impressive. The aquaponics system for the plants was also a great idea. I’d love to see you rake another shot it some day to improve on what you learned with this build. Great job though. Super nice 👍🏼
Love the set up I’m greatful go see how you made this filtration system. I’m planing on building a koi pond at some point soon so it’s helpful to see video like yours. Great video and those koi are beautiful.
@@neilryan9664 Hi there i want to thank you for such insightful video on filters. I have a question i hope you might help me out. I have just build a pond without bottom drain so im now looking to fit a retro bottom drain, after looking at one of your videos explaining the difference between gravity fed and pump fed system, im comfident i can achieve a gravity fed system similar to yours. However, my question is it possible to fit gravity fed system to retro bottom drain using just 1 large filter box such as a waste bin containing the bio, mechanical instead of using 3 buckets or drums like you done yours on the above video?. Sorry it probably sounds like a stupid question. Thanks
Lovely fish, I'm no expert, but the koi look well selected. You must have a good eye. I would love to see these, once you have grown them on. I noticed that the small UV is doing well, zapping the single celled algae, (green water.) I noticed the brush algae is thick in the pond. Normally my fish devour this as it grows.(You must be feeding them really well;-)) This type of algae will only do your water quality good, so no worries. You asked for ideas. This is mine: How about building a nice wooden housing for your filter? It will be more pleasing to look at?
Cheers for the feedback. To be honest I know very little about koi selection and picked them solely on what I thought looked interesting, glad you like them👍 thanks for the suggestion... a filter enclosure is something I have considered before but I might have to relocate the pond soon so I'm gonna hold off until that happens.
@@neilryan9664 ah I get you. So there's a method in your madness then. The whole set up will be so much more esthetically pleasing, when you get it housed. Tbh I was wondering, why build a good formal koi pond, and put so much thought & work into building an excellent filteration system, it's obviously been a labour of love. Then not house it. Although If you're moving the system there's just no point at the moment. I used to manage a tropical fish and cold water wholesaler's. We used to sell a lot of koi. I Know absolutely nothing about show specifications. Yet I was told a couple of times, by koi dealers I had a good eye for selecting Koi. Apparently some people have It, and others don't. Going by your fish, I would say you have it. Good luck with your hobby. BTW if you seen what I use to filter my little pond. You would probably laugh... 👍 Ps. Love your fluidised bed. K1 Media is great stuff.
One of the nicest thought out filtration systems I’ve ever seen. Love the t-joints for customisation and adding in parallel UV and Aquaponics. Since it’s gravity fed do you find the vortex on the settling chamber a touch slow? Only modification I’d make is chucking in a bag or two of lava rock or alfagrog in the last chamber- much much higher surface area than the k1 and would complement the fluidised bed chamber nicely.
Cheers. The slower the vortex the more efficient it is. I had a pump fed vortex previously and found that only a fraction of the waste settled out. Yes lava rock would be a good addition 👍
Hi there ... great setup. Only part about your pond that I'm still trying to figure out is how is the retro fit at the bottom of the pond pulling water out of the pond into your first container? Been watching your video over and over and can't seem to figure it out. Maybe I'm thinking to hard. Not a expert at plumbing here, clueless as to how your water leaves the pond with a verticle piping like that. Explanation would be greatly appreciated. I like to setup the same thing on my pond.
@@neilryan9664 Tried looking for examples of your vertical gravity fed pipe. I'm unable to find one. I understand about the bottom gravity fed system but "vertical" I'm lost LOL Any video that you can recommend to can explain your vertical setup? It be very much appreciated.
Being a gravity system, how do you calculate the flow rate to ensure the electric pump extracts equal vol of water ? Maybe you can install the whole UV into the brush system - Less piping and it kills off the algae much earlier and your vessels will be free of algae
I have the same question, surely if the pump is more powerful than the amount of gravity fed water then the pump chamber will just empty itself? Perhaps this is achieved because the output pipe to the pond is smaller than the 3" intake? Perhaps just lucky it equals out.
Yer very true. Is hard getting them to equal out. I know it might sound crude but if you have a pump that’s to powerful you can send the water through a copper or stainless pipe and hammer the pipe down to restrict the flow bit at a time until you get the flow right. Or jubilee down to smaller pipe bore. This is exactly what we do on the wash system in our milking parlour.
with 4 inch pipes water level be same in filters as pond, also u need much more pre filter brushes or you can setup alfagrog chamber as pre filter for better quality filtration, hope it helps
Hi mate this look amazing, your filter system look great, I did the same thing with my pond, there is no bottom drain in my pond, where did buy that kind of bottom drain from, I’m planning to do kind the same set up, secondly any tip you could give on building one, I seen the prices for the nexus and that far too expensive for me, looking forward to hear from you soon mate 👍
It has been fantastic to be honest. Only thing I have had to do is more regular water changes but that is due to fish growing in a small pond. The only thing I would change is build it bigger!
just wondering if you corrected ur filter system, you need all pipes to b 4 inch, from pond to filter chambers, all the way, sorry its a bad system without 4 inch pipe
Hi Neil nice setup love the home made filters worth a sub from me I'm playing with gutter leaf brushes in my vortex right now and some proper vortex brushes as well and getting good pay back from them they would work well in your 2nd brush pot what part of the world are you in Martyn
Hi Martyn. I'm in Perth, Western Australia. Brushes are a very effective mechanical filter imo and easy to clean. I occasionally pop a 50 micron aquarium filter sock in the opening of the outlet pipe exiting the brush chamber and what escapes the brushes is very minimal. I'm new to uploading so thanks for the sub👍
It would overflow the filters if the capacity of the “sump” was exceeded but I doubt he cares being this is completely outside. Just as long as his drain is above the floor a foot or two the fish would be ok.
You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. The bottom drain stays right at the bottom of the pond to get rid of all the dirt and as long as your filter system is no lower than the pond water level, the water will just level out and remain in the pond
Its clean, neat and looks like you know what your doing..but its a bit small for Koi. Maybe two and some great long finned Goldfish..Or the two Koi are Butterfly Koi. You might make a matching cover around the filter. Tie it all together.
Some pipes could be just too small. i think that is restricting the flow. Especially the one that brings the water through the bottom drain through the wall. If you would drill the holes lower you wouldnt achieve anything as the water would just be pumped away and you would have the water levels even lower.

"Dark and murky" really? The water looks pretty clear to me, maybe clean your specs mate. At the start of the video you can see the fish clearly. Personally I couldn't stand looking at that ugly filter system but it works
Some really cool system you got there mate, I will definitely add the parallel connection for the uv light.

Good vid! Really like the aquaponics set up
Retro > vortex > brushes > moving K1 > static > UV/Aquaphonics. How cool is that!
yeah i also use just regular bins for my filters. mines a bit more low tech but it works, its cheap and easy to build,./ awesome system., cheers mate

Nice setup. Would suggest adding fresh water mussels snails and possibly shrimp if they survive, try take care of that algae.
Great sir! you have one of the rarest koi coral the black and orange one
Nice set up
nice set up

Thanks for sharing good luck 👍
I think you should put the UV light between the mechanical filters.🙂 Beautiful set up.
Thank you. I haven't actually ran a uv for over a year now. Water stays clear
Nice pond!
Nice setup! I think if you use bigger diameter pipes between the chambers, the water leveling will be much better.

Not sure what you mean about the flow rate. I have a 5000lph pump and that's how much water I move. The uv does not kill string algae.
I have the same question, surely if the pump is more powerful than the amount of gravity fed water then the pump chamber will just empty itself? Perhaps this is achieved because the output pipe to the pond is smaller than the 3" intake? Perhaps just lucky it equals out.
@@foxyben1212 You're right... Plus the return pipe back to the pond have too many bend which restrict the flow of the water.

Nice system
Nice one 👍
Nice one
great pond.. how i wish i could build the same way. by the way my pond is filled with tilapya

Is everything connected by 3" pipe? Can you let us know what power your pump is? Thanks!
Very nice
Bro how did you make the pond? Is it concrete or is there a pond liner?
Nice set up! Great and inspirating DIY work. How does the system perform on the long run? Did you have any issues yet?

Neil, how much & how often do you change water in your setup?
Once a week in summer. Ifs a small pond and the fish are getting bigger so water changes are now a must
Verry good...
Are those just normal wheelie bins youre using?
like this setup what are the dimensions of pond & size of filter boxes
Pond dimensions are 1200x2400x700 deep. The black filter bins are about 60l each and the drum for the vortex is about 200l

What do you think about shower filer ?
Will it be automatically resume the flow of water when there is power interruption
I like it

No. The filter chambers are the same level as the pond

How many l/h it is?
Whats the dimensions?
where you put uv light?
I guess the pond is placed under a roof so there isn’t direct sunlight that’s causing algae problems🤷♀️ but that’s wat I think
Why not just keep the fish in the wheelie bin too?
Could do but the pond is overstocked as it is unfortunately
