Solitaire Fishing Challenge | Baitcaster VS Spinning On The River

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- This video has a fishing challenge, I am fishing against myself! Well kind of… I’ll be on the river and I’ve got 2 baitcasters and 2 spinning combos set up. The plan is 10 minute periods with each rod style. In the end the total weight of fish over 1lb wins! Not sure what it wins but it wins!!! Being on the river there’s nothing else I would be in except the Tracker Grizzly 1754 with my @MercuryMarine jet drive.
For any of the gear I use all season long you can get it here: www.basspro.co...

I live in NE Tennessee and my favorite fishing is river fishing for Smallmouth. One of my go to baits in cold water is a hair jig, especially when water temperatures get below 45°F. Since I tie my own flies and spinnerbaits I can tailor my lures to the water I fish which is typically the Nolichucky River. Really enjoy watching you fish our local waters.
Hey Doug I live in Blountville and I’ve been looking for someone to fish with on the Nolachuckey Holston Rivers if you ever want somebody to fish with just shoot me a message and I’d love to see what kind of stuff u tie I’ve been to moan jigs spinnerbaits!
These river fishing videos are the best. Thanks for all the insight, Ott. This looks like a fun challenge.
That’s a pretty slick riverboat you’ve got there, and living on that river too? I guess I could get accustomed to that life😂
Your property is absolutely gorgeous! Love your content!
you have the best content...love the camerawork too. have fun!
Ott, I love your river smallmouth videos! Please keep them coming!
Really enjoyed this one Ott. Take care
Great Video Ott! Good luck this season!
Love these long river fishing videos... Keep it up Ott. My Place in Parsons Tennessee is all about river fishing (Beech River & Tennessee river)
Finally got to finish video. Ha I sense you rooting for the spinning rods!!! They almost did it. Great video lots of fun I’m dying to catch a smallmouth.
Love the videos and all the tips help me a ton thank you Mr Ott.
What a back yard!! We spent a week in Dayton year before last and fell in love with Tennessee. Almost bought a house on the Cumberland river I think?? I bet there’s some nice arrowheads around that area if you look. Thanks for the video
We may have found a few…
You were 2 city’s down from me but you prolly wish you bought that house when our market went up 120% or more. But Cumberland river is the best trout river in Tennessee other than Center hill
I got a pretty good collection from here in Texas and New Mexico. I got a little screen me and kids dig for them occasionally. It’s good fun long as it isn’t too hot.
Really great video Ott. Love seeing you fish the Holston.
Keep up the great content Ott! Be safe this year on the tournament trail and good luck!
Sorry to see Ott loose, but grateful for Ott's win. Thanks and good luck this year can't wait for yall to kick off
😂
I would lean towards the spinning rod myself. Great video. Very entertaining.
I noticed you have your cooler strapped to one of your pods on the back of your boat. I like the idea, I may try that. I enjoy watching your videos. Good luck in the tournaments in 2022.
That was great!!!👊🏻 Nice to see how to determine what to throw or keep throwing!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
I was in a tournament on Sam Rayburn late spring...Picked up a spinning rod and some reason I tied a natural shad square bill on...
40 straight cast 41 lg mouth's..no BS ... biggest 8.49 we won the tournament and got big bass also...lol...
My buddy only had a bait caster but same bait....he landed 7 but 1 was a 4.5 lb. But the difference to me was the line and rod...that rod tip was really flexible.. almost to much but I think it gave a different action to the same bait...I also was using 20lb. braid that came on it....(the spinning rod was a gift from my wife).....lol...
Good video keep it up......
I've always wanted to fish the river there...
Spinning this time. Need to do for each season. LOVE you videos
Really cool video Ott! Awesome idea JD!
Great video ott ! you're great !
you're great with either rod. does it even matter ? Good luck this year in MLF
That was really cool. I'm going to do that. Maybe not every 10 minutes but I'll think of something.
Catching smallmouth in current is a lot of fun. They sure fight and feel bigger.
You sure had a good day.
Definitely spin in the rivers. Susquehanna aka Susky & also the Juniata, both here in PA. The Susky is world class smallie fishery.
Every time you say hey Siri you open her up on my phone! Lol Chad from Just Reel !
When I watched it the same thing happened 😂
Same
What a wicked setup ott. Is that your land. If so, freking wow my friend. Beautiful
Ott, doe's your property back up to the Holston river? Do you have your own land you can hunt on? Would like to see this challenge again when the water warms up. You are really blessed to have a river like this to fish close to your house. Be watching you on the MLF tour and praying that you have a great 2022 season.🙏🐟🎣
Yes it does and no we can’t. It’s in a subdivision and the covenants don’t allow hunting 🙄. I’ll have to try it again for sure!
That’s pretty cool Ott maybe some time you can give us a closer look at your baits you used God bless 🙏
The Holston River is an excellent destination, beautiful scenery, and awesome fishing. We call the East Tennessee area God's country.
Great video Ott-like the challenge! I’m trying to incorporate spinning in my fishing, just so comfortable with a baitcaster.. lighter lures and presentations available would be worth it I think. What jighead and plastic were you using on the spinning rod for that tight line technique? Thanks in advance
That’s when you use the stealth chatterbait when the water is with the speed craw, spunk Chad or kaitech impact. I’ve also come to find out when the water is real clear and not alot of grass the thunder kricket seems to do a little better for clear water.
Great video!
Hey Ott if you need to hire a camera man I am available, I believe yours is fishing MLF against you this year 😂😂 All jokes aside love the videos, very cool idea! God Bless!
When you swapped the swim bait off I thought for sure you were gonna put a #5 shadrap on or Tiny?
Great video Ott. Always enjoy when you fish the Holston. I was thinking the spinning rod would win. Do you think a little spinnerbait or under spin would have worked? Safe travels down to the tournament and hope you win.
Yes it could have for sure. So did I!
what action crankin stick are you throwing your bladed jig on? love your videos Ott! Best of luck on your up coming season!
River fishing for me definitely spinning rod!
I love fishing the upper James River here in Virginia, I have the same 1754 Tracker boat with a 60/45 Jet . I like to add pods on it? You think the medium size Beavertail has would work? welded on for more lift. boat is heavy in the transom. Thanks
Spinning of course
What lure did you use catching that first 2 fish?
Love seeing the bps platinum spinning reel and rod.
Thanks
That is a good stretch of the river to fish I fish it a lot
Have you ever used a pulse jig with pulse lures ? That’s an awesome lure as well wihen the bite is tough!
No I’ve not.
Just out of curiosity have ever considered a shallow water anchor on that boat?
Are you using braid to fluorocarbon now on your jigs and pitching presentations?
Yes I am. Love it.
@@OttDeFoeFishing anyway you could do a video talking about it? Seen a lot of folks doing that trend lately.
Content awesome as always. However every time you said “hey Siri “ my phone would activate a timer as well or at least respond.
What a perfect boat. That setup is great. How much does something like that cost setup the same way? 25k?
Boat motor and trailer yes. Been a lot of extras done that would make it close to 40 I’m guessing. Lots of fab work then trolling motor graphs etc.
Spinning rod!
That’s amazing. How much land do you have on the river? It’s beautiful
It’s about 14 acres and yes in this boat and some decent water flow I can get to Cherokee dam or Knoxville.
@@OttDeFoeFishing that’s so awesome. And the scenery is amazing
Ott would that arashi vibe worked today in your challenge or was it just a little to early for it ??
Possible. I bet it would have.
I've fished that river my whole life ive never caught a spot lol
What size and action cranking stick is that ? I love the grey and red ones I would love to buy them from you Ott or any one in the comments
6’6” medium. They are great.
Did you have the same speed reels for both styles
They are close.
spinning
What bps cranking stick do you use for chatterbaits?
For regular ones the 7’3” heavy. Like 3/8 and 1/2 chatters
What river ya fishing
To make it an even comparison, do you ever throw a jerkbait on a spinning reel? I've seen one pro in particular whose name rhymes with locket who swears the only way to fish a jerkbait is on spinning rod. I can throw a bait caster but I'm more comfortable in my advancing years throwing a spinning rod... seriously tho I love tightlining. I've watched 3B outdoors a ton on his tightlining. Do you tie a loop knot? And what bait so you use when you tightline?
I know guys who do that are great with a jerk bait. I just like it better on a bait caster. I don’t tie a loop knot but it does give the bait more action. It truly is the better way, just hard to break the habit of not. And I use the same bait as Nathan for it…
Cat bro why didn't you and cat daddy tell me bout that river when I was coming up an working lol
I think the baitcast combo would work better in a river.
If ita not, I'm going to find it and buy it. Geez
What’s the farthest you’ve ever ran from the house on the river fishing? I mean technically you could go all the way to Cherokee damn and down into Knoxville right?
I’m guessing spinning rod will win
A little help to the bait caster, you cast to a provided fish chasing your camera mans', that would not happen in a real event. But great stuff.
Wish I had a pole to fish..
Whats your address? I'll send ya one
Tell BPS to stop using micro guides. That's all.
