One of the best reactions so far IMHO. Even Nemophila's fans have been taken by surprise with DISSENSSION. And they played it live recently during their last online concert - flawlessly. I love that they don't take themselves too seriously but are in their music at 150%.

It's named after the Nemophila flower (All people from the UK and Europe seem to add an extra "i" for some reason lol). A 5 petal flower (5 members) that originates from North America and known for its Bright Baby Blue color. There is a park in Japan where they are grown and when they bloom, it turns the whole park Blue.

Yeah. Why do so many who reacts to N E M O P H I L A say it wrong ? Several American reactors also do it. And its not all people from Europe and US who do it (UK is still part of Europe you know).
That being said. This band is awesome to say it mildly. So many really good bands from Nippon. Specially female bands. They really kick butt :)

Nemophila have five petals, like Lovebites' Pentagram is symbolizes they are a group of equals. If you see the members' names you will surely recognize some of them: Gt Saki (Mary's Blood), Gt Hazuki (ex-Diqualia, Lisa-X Band), Dr Tamu Murata, Haraguchi (ex-Hölderlins) and Mayu (ex-Lipstick). They are experimenting a lot and Mayu uses a number of singing styles, but the large amount of screaming is new. They have yet released just a handful of songs and a good number of cover videos that are all really fun to watch. But with their collected expertise i have high hopes for the things to come from them.

These guys merit a deep dive. This single isn't especially indicative of their output to this point, it feels more like an experiment to see if they could do it. They are easily the most fun band I've seen in ages. Apart from the lead guitarist, the rest of the members are all from defunct girl metal bands. The singer was doing some small solo shows in the summer of 2019 and just collected some musicians to play for her and they really *REALLY* got along and decided to make a go of it. They released a bunch of live studio covers last year that are a hoot and they clearly just love playing together. If nothing else, check out their debut single OIRAN, and maybe their BABYMETAL Megitsune cover. In both cases, watch for the bassist busting out laughing whenever the singer starts screaming.

I love this band, Dissension is their heaviest song so far, Mayu screams more here than she does on all of their other songs combined. Strangely the solo section reminds me of early 2000's Dream Theater, you could probably fit that into The Glass Prison quite easily.
You were actually spot on with the meaning of the band name Nimophila (it's also a flower), if it ended with philia that would mean an unnatural love of nature.

No country is keeping the flame of rock burning brightly quite like Japan. The number of great bands is staggering, the level of virtuoso musicianship is ridiculously high and the number of kick-ass and bad-ass female rock musicians and all female and women-fronted hard rock and metal bands is unrivalled anywhere else in the world. Women in metal in Japan is a tradition that goes back to the 1980s and the band Show-Ya.

Absolutely love this band! I am with you on the screaming but I love her screaming at me! Part in that even if I could clearly hear the words, it is in Japanese and I still wouldn't understand it but it just sounds sooo good! Mayu, singer, has an awesome voice and this even took me by surprise and I have been following them for a bit now. Thank you for reacting to them! Some originals to check out are Raitai, Soria and Oiran or a ballad called Life.

A fellow brit and seen a lot of metal over the years (was around in the 80/90s Birmingham) these are very good there musicianship is off the scale .This latest MV has a lot more of the harsh vocals in it .I suggest going over to there YT channel to look at and react to more of this band you will be surprised they can and do play any thing .only been together 18 months but come from some well known bands in japan .You only got a fraction of the fun side of this band there always smiling (drummer and Bass nicknamed laughing thunder) and both guitarists are world class with as you look R Saki and left Hazuki google Suki guitarist to see how active and impressive she is there all unbelievably talented .3 online concerts have been very impressive as they went into Corvid conditions just after forming .Try Oiran or Raitei or go look at one of there covers Iron Maiden's Trooper as 1.4 mil views do bare in mind Mayu can not speak English and tried very hard with the covers .She is 23 and trying hard with the English .Saki tends to be the English spokes woman in the band .Thanks

"Making a splash" is a nice way putting it. Nemophila is considered a supergroup with members of various other groups. They are getting out there in full force. When I watched their first two cover videos that they made as a fun side project I hoped they'll do more. One year later and three amazing live streams and three original songs, there is no going back for them as a fun side project. They are getting there amongst the best like Lovebites, Band-Maid, Scandal, Aldious, BabyMetal. Many are going crazy for them as am I :) Heck they made Nickleback song be amazing.

"phila" does derive from the Greek philos (loving), "loving" so "woodland- loving". It refers to the flower having a preference for woodlands. This is their hardest song, they have metal songs with less harsh vocals. The absolutely silliest cover they have done is a metal version of the "Banana Song" from the Minions "Despicable Me 2" movie. This is a band that has fun together.

  • @fightrashovar4578

Oh, so nice, Hedgy gets speechless! I follow your channel quite a time, and I appreciate your approach to music and your analyses anytime. When I saw you took a look at Nemophila's new song, I got triggered instantly, as imho this band is outstanding. Each of these women is incredibly skilled, there's no doubt about that, but their musical virtuosity alone wouldn't make them stand out as much as they do. The band matches up appropriate musicians perfectly, well-versed musicians who even seem to be real soulmates - you'll see that when you get to listen and watch more videos.
Any judgements on Nemophila are provisional. The band is quite new, it exists since fall 2019, and it has a narrow repertoire of original songs - not more than seven up to now, and these songs are quite different in their use of styles and sounds respectively. But put them together with the nearly 20 covers (of songs all the way through the history of heavy rock music since the 1970s plus two hilarious trashy fun songs), and you can see clearly how much joy they have while playing together ...
Do I have to stress the fact that I'm a huge fan of them? I had the same feeling of surprise that you obviously had, too. Not just once. And listening to the same song again won't be boring or disappointing, the subtlety of Nemophilas heavy music is astonishing.
Finally some fun facts: the term "Nemophila" doesn't denominate "a genus of plant" alone, with it is meant usually the "(Baby-) Blue-Eyes" flower which is related to the Forget-Me-Nots. It is blossoming in masses in April, which makes it very popular in Japan with it's flower craze (for pictures, search for Hitachi Seaside Park or Osaka Maishima Seaside Park). Concerning the band Nemophila, they have the "N. maculata" depicted in their band logo, the five petals representing the bandmates.

    Great to see you surprised.
    Founded 2019. Supergroup composed of:
    Mary's Blood guitarist Saki
    ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu
    ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki
    ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and
    ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam.)
This started off as a side project, co-organized by Saki and Mayu. It is fair to say that other than Saki, none of them had been with a breakout band, despite having insane chops. Putting these five together clearly was the trick-they are just exploding. It was not clear they would be a long-term thing, but it looks more and morel likely they're going to stick with it.
They initially did a bunch of metal covers of well-known rock, pop and metal songs, and posted them on youtube. Then they began posting originals, starting with “Oiran” ua-cam.com/video/eyb2NtPwcxc/v-deo.html Their originals show a clear trend toward harder and heavier.

Hedgy, nice review. You already got the background on the band from previous commenters. But I want to elevate praise for Tamu. She has been a very successful session drummer, and TAMA drums feature artist for years.
As mentioned before you Should check out Oiran or Raitai. But one song not mentioned so far that is really my favorite - is new song 'Fighter' -- old school hard rock feel to that song -- a cruising down the road with windows down and music playing loud sort of song.
And one last thing, if you are doing another Japanese week -- you really (Really) check out Sokoninaru and D_Drive. For Sokoninaru I would try either 're:program' or 'Lament Moment'.
And for D_drive try 'Begin Again'.
I am extremely curious about your thoughts on these 2 bands.
I live in China and late night it's nice to see reviews of other hard rock music fans like you. Thank you.

Whenever you get a group of Japanese girls together there's bound to be a bit of 'kawaii' thrown in. I think it's their need to appeal to not just the 'metalhead' market but to a broader public to some degree. I loved the harsh vocals here and the guitar playing. btw I bought the Swarmageddon cd and I'm loving it. Cheers Hedgy.

You'll need to go over to their UA-cam channel and check out what they have to offer. A wide range of covers..... they do Linkin Park Given Up better than Linkin Park. More original songs performed live in their studio. It's basically a group of girls from other bands who got together to jam and it turned into something. Their covers are everywhere from Old School (T-Rex, Kiss) to straight Pop they've given some teeth to (Pink), an outstanding cover or Iron Maiden The Trooper... to Helloween, XJapan, and (yes) Babymetal (Saki, guitar player is a Babymetal fan.) But if you intend to do another opinion video, another of their singles would be recommended. A song really shows what they are about... called Oiran. ua-cam.com/video/eyb2NtPwcxc/v-deo.html (this is the "live studio" version, there is also an MV). They basically release something on UA-cam every Friday.

    • @fightrashovar4578

I think that’s a misperception driven by the preselection through UA-cam, the viral spread (sorry!) of sensational phenomena in the internet generally and our own expectations of and prejudices towards the japanese culture.
Take a closer look, and you will soon see that there are lots of well-versed female musicians in Japan, no matter what genre you are examining (I think that has to do with the role music plays in the education from early on, and the importance it has in popular culture and the society generally - take Karaoke, the idol phenomenon, anime music for instance). But I’d always claim that the business there is still dominated by men, the society there is somehow conservative and patriarchic all in all.
In such a surrounding, subcultures will be particularly strong (it's obvious that applies to Japan), and given the fact that the position women are assigned to by ones who have the say (mostly men) still is quite an inferior one and sometimes frankly insulting (take for instance the two recent cases of verbal abuse of women by high ranking representatives of the organisational committee of the Olympic games), it should be no wonder that women will devote themselves to alternative cultural niches in particular numbers, and organise strictly in their (female) peer groups.
So with the years there developed an all-female branch of J-Metal, with some individuals and groups that served as „amplifiers“ - Show-Ya, Destrose, Aldious, or even Kumi Adachi, Rie a.k.a. Suzaku, and the likes.
So yes, in comparison with other countries in Japan you’ll find many female rock musicians, quite a lot of all-female bands and groups, but the same applies to male musicians, mixed and all-male bands, who outnumber their all-female counterparts clearly. Yet the (exotic) appeal of the all-female bands is significantly higher.
