Thanks for this! I’m a newbie and learn so much from all your videos. I have old sports injuries from basketball and volleyball and am just over 50 so I really need to get my arms and back ready for longer paddles. I’m still using rental gear and over padding on rec kayaks so arm fatigue is an issue for now. These exercises will really help!
Thanks Dan, just what I was looking for. I'm 67 and have been managing my stiffness since I turned 30. It doesn't get easier but I paddled 10 miles yesterday and I'm feeling pretty good today. I'll also add that a magnesium supplement can help with stiffness and soreness too, but stretching and strengthening will always be needed. I'll add these to my routine.
Perfect timing. I recently was given new physio exercises for my damaged shoulder, and I practise both shoulder and scapula CARs on the advice of my kinetic therapist. Yoga is my most important tool, but the idea of specific warmup and cooldown exercises is an excellent idea. Thank you!
Excellent exercises! You may have some upper cervical issues with the anterior weight bearing and superior (upward angle) sight line Dan. Your upper neck muscles (suboccipitals) were working overtime for you, could see it in the opening side posture view while you two were conversing. Often see tension headaches with this too. Maybe check in with your chiropractor for this one! You certainly have a keeper physio 👍
Great series of stretches! Some of those I do, some were new and I'll definitely try them. I got 10 years on you Dan, and yeah, the stiffness problem only gets worse!
Really excellent advice. Particularly the bit about better to do a little of this than not doing a “great” complex warm-up. Need to modify a bit for my wounded shoulder. But I’m gonna be doing this.
Dan, love your vids... very informative. But, I have a question for you... I don't mean to go off topic, but after watching and rewatching your vids, I've found myself a tad disoriented. I have plans on buying a FF kayak. I live in a condo with an overzealous HOA. Hence, I can only store the boat at the local reservoir. However, they insist that all boats be 12ft or more in length. Finally to my question.... I'm only 5'8" .... Do I need the Moken 12.5 or the Lure 13.5? Will the Lure be too big for me? PS.... there aren't any FF dealers close by , so I don't have any ops to try them out. I'll have to order it. Thanks for your help 👍
Helpful. My shoulders can give me some pain. I hoist the kayak up on my car racks and I think this hurts them. I know I should tilt it up, but I sometimes I dont. My holly grail is getting a super light kayak,...I already have a 40lb kayak. So, I think I'm already about as light as its gonna get.
I've been wanting a kayak my whole life and want a pedal drive kayak, but my parents say they're too expensive, and every night I wish I had a kayak even though I probably won't ever get one
I'm not an expert but if your seat is adjustable at the front, try lowering it. I've found this helped me with leg circulation., I think the idea of supporting the legs by raising the seat front can cut off some blood circulation. Just my experience.
Hey Dan, so I'm curious, have you experienced numbness in your feet while kayaking? I'm having that issue and even after watching your video this morning and going to kayak, still, numbness. Any suggestions for a solution to this?

Useful and timely, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
My wife has replaced both knees. The position for the hip flexor with the knee on the ground she can't do. Is there an alternative.
Great video, but just wait 'til you reach 50... Lol!

Start to do things to earn money around your neighborhood
I want to ask every time I go out I always end up with my left foot numb how can I prevent that
Warm up those hip. People don’t realize how active your hip flexors and butt muscles are when you’re paddling.

@ninenine8546 My seat only slides front to back. I didn't know some adjust up and down.
