PM Trudeau comments on B.C. marine protection, Toronto byelection loss - June 25, 2024

  • In Vancouver, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces an Indigenous-led $335-million initiative aimed at protecting and conserving marine wildlife in the Northern Shelf Bioregion and the Great Bear Sea region on the coast of British Columbia. He also comments on the results of the June 24 byelection in Toronto-St. Paul's. Conservative candidate Don Stewart scored an upset win over Liberal candidate Leslie Church by a margin of 42.1 per cent to 40.5 per cent in the historically Liberal-held riding.
    Chief Marilyn Slett (president of Coastal First Nations), federal Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier, B.C. Environment Minister George Heyman and Na̲nwak̲olas Council president Dallas Smith also take part in the announcement.
