ever notice that whenever mario isn't the star, luigi gets rich? luigi's mansion, mario is missing, and even making bank in mario odyssey's balloon-hunt dlc. guess plumbing wasn't paying he bills.
In that Mario tennis scene. Mario was jealous that his brother won. Not because he was in the spotlight. Luigi doesn't get the spotlight because of Nintendo not because of Mario. Some of the old games aren't Mario. You can even see that one of them was wearing blue.
Another thing the DK series is all jumbled up. As Mario was DK rival. You can take a look at how DK Jr was a Mario Kart character in the very first Mario Kart. Both sides made the characters look bad.
For real, older siblings get jealous of their younger siblings. Why would Mario be jealous of Luigi be different from something similar we all have with siblings?

In the Encyclopedia it's established Mario has been through the events of Donkey Kong and other games like DK Hockey. It also states he used to be called Jumpman.
In Odyssey the Classic Outfit is stated to be Mario's original outfit and to be disliked by the og DK.
The Nintendo website mentions he used to wear this Classic Outfit as well.
Btw Mario was never enemies with the Kongs.

@@Eris1987 There's a logical miscommunication that I want to point out with the first statement because you are reading what he is saying in the wrong context. He isn't saying that "Mario" is a *literal* different Mario in the past, he is saying that Nintendo back in the days influenced Mario's actions a lot more through the norms set back in the 80's and 90's for what people typically were into or liked to behave as.
Thus, making the argument of pointing out Mario's *REALLY OLD* games a meek point because it wasn't today's Mario.
He is, *as a character, as a GOAL for Nintendo as a company,* a "different" Mario.
Mario, as a character, is not the same Mario as in the old days because nowadays Mario is a character with a personality that has established several links to other major characters in the franchise.
This is in contrast to the very old games, where Mario mostly adapted his behaviour based on the audience Nintendo was trying to advertise to.
In this sense, even though it doesn't really read off the tounge that well, in the old games,
Mario wasn't Mario.

Saying Mario is "evil" or alluding to be, even *if* those actions were *canonically correct* (which you have pointed out in several replies to not be the case), it *still* would be a null and void point to make because Mario wasn't his own character, he was rapidly changing based on Nintendo's idea of the gamer crowd they were desperately trying to advertise to. You can also see this in advertisements of games in the retro era of Nintendo too.
So yeah, in a sense, it wasn't the *same* Mario but not in the sense that the same plumber that was jumping over barrels to save a random 8/10 from Brooklin from an ape nestling on the construction site of a New York City skyscraper,
*wasn't* the same middle aged plumber that in the very near future is fighting against and alongside humanoid creatures, designed around themes surrounding the concept of electrical engineering, in a mythical realm accessed by having a strong enough bond with his slightly taller green brother, that they need to traverse on a ship made out of rocks and sand, *AND THEIR SPIKEY SHELLED ARCHNEMESIS FOR OVER 40 YEARS SOMEHOW ACCESSED TOO* (dunno which lacky of his got a little freaky with him),
but because *WHAT Mario was trying to BE* was massively different.
Edit: Sorry for trying to sound rude btw. And yes, some of the later parts in this comment are hyperbole (or playing in on a common joke) for the sake of being funny and aren't canon depictions. No need to correct me, I know what's actually right and took my sweet time reading several official wiki's of this franchise to back them up.
The short tl;dr of this whole thing is that the commentor is not saying we are experiencing different Mario's but different *interpretations* of Mario, with the most looked-at in this video describing an era of Mario where he didn't really *have* a full-on personality but was just marketing man number one billion and was just trying to appease to the crowd that played videogames a lot, much like any other videogame company in the 80's and 90's.
It's kind of like how people were apologists for certain antagonists of anti-smoking commercials back in the early 2010's on the internet. Its basically the same thing as trying to portray an interpretation of a fictional character as evil when the intent of him being portrayed that way wasn't genuine but just an exaggerated stereotype to appeal to as much people as possible for marketing/business reasons.
Which is what the original commentor is pointing out as the exact problem with this video if it was meant to be taken seriously.

I think you misunderstood the whole thing with Donkey Kong. That's actually Cranky Kong that was fighting Mario back in the day, so the DK Junior you see where Mario "was the villian" is actually DK as a child.
You can confirm with this with the older DK games when you speak to Cranky.
Well the person in Donkey Kong who looks like Mario is actually his father. Also Cranky must have shared the the story to his son, same with Mario’s father.

Speaking of Nicobbq, I've entirely boycotted NicoBBQ over him assuming an enemy from Mario land being a burger, when in truth it's a spirit-possessed paper lantern, a Yokai from one of Japan's folktales. I forget the name of the Yokai, but I'm certain about my perception of that "enemy". I corrected him once in the comment, then he continues to make that mistake, so I corrected him again the same way, then refusing to watch him anymore. I cannot watch a guy who makes such assumptions of my culture and never learning from the mistake. Is it petty of me to come to that decision? Maybe, but it goes against what I see as what's right, to watch such a person like that still.

If you read Paper Luigi's diary he mentions how much he cares for Mario.
Luigi does go on quite a few adventures SMB, SMB3, SMB2USA, SMB2LL, BSSMUSA, SMW, etc.
It's established in PM64 that Luigi is staying home to watch the house.
TTYD while Mario is away Luigi goes on his own adventure to aid another Kingdom that needed help.

The other is a Luigi who has been through the events of Inside Story and probably Sticker Star.
Mario has been through the events of the Paper Mario games as established by existence of characters like the Koopatrol and Star Spirits in the main world.
By characters like King Goomboss whose existence rely on PM64's events having happened in the main world.
Mario having been said to take on a paper form in a bunch of interviews. This is similar to the pixel form Mario can take on.
And the Paper Block from the Blocks of Nostalgia being stated to be one of Mario's past adventures aka Paper Mario or PM64.

most of this is misinformation, mario and luigi are not rivals they are close brothers and friends. this has been seen multiple times in the games and in the recent movie. mario was just acting like an older brother when he stepped on his foot, all brothers do things like that. that probably wasn’t mario who treated donkey kong like that, it was jumpman who is believed to be a different person from mario. if mario did do those things to donkey kong, it was because donkey kong kidnapped pauline and he had a reason to cage him and donkey kong junior. they are dangerous wild animals who could hurt even more people. he kinda deserved the laughing and pointing that mario gave him for the bad things he did. in super mario world mario points, he does not punch yoshi. they originally intended for him to punch yoshi, but they changed it to him pointing because it was out of character for mario. this was explained later in that interview. mario is not killing toads when he breaks bricks. later in the manual it explains that when mario hits the power blocks he is saving the toads and they reward him with power ups and coins in exchange. yes, he was pretty mean to wario in the comic i’ll give you that one. but I don’t believe mario had any bad intentions behind what he was doing to him, he was just trying to have fun and did it the wrong way.

@@joomface yeah he is jumpman, i got that wrong but he had a reason for doing what he did to donkey kong. he’s a wild gorilla who wreaked havoc and kidnapped his girlfriend. he was a threat to the public and mario had to stop him. he caged him later to keep people safe. the movie not being canon does not matter. it’s still a representation of the characters and how they act in game. the mario and luigi series and the luigi’s mansion games proves that mario cares about luigi. mario has also saved luigi in the mainline games like super mario galaxy 1&2 and super mario 3d land.

The opening cutscene to Donkey kong country heavily implies this, as Cranky plays the arcade donkey kong theme with the graters from that game before being interrupted by current dk.

So helping people out know what is and isn't lore is something I like to do.
Except that Luigi is never an asshole to Mario. He literally idolized his brother, and Mario is constantly an ass to him. Plus, that shit goes _way_ down in adulthood with normal siblings. Sure we might razz each other occasionally, but none of my siblings would crush my foot for finally winning at something.
@@Eris1987 outside of the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi series, there really _isn't_ solid lore/continuity to the Mario franchise. Miyamoto, himself, likened them to classic cartoons where any given scenario can happen and they don't really affect each other. Which, of course, makes sense when you consider Donkey Kong's origins as a Popeye game. Plus, it doesn't make any sense within the greater Mario multiverse for modern DK to be different from the OG. Modern DK was one of the seven Star Children, which means he's the same age as Mario _and_ he's appeared alongside Jr. in _multiple_ spin-off games. Cranky being the OG may have been canonized in the DKC series, but it doesn't make sense in the main continuity, loose as it is.

In the 1-UP thing, why are there multiple Mario clones? Because when you said that you get a life from a Mario that previously died, there was never a Mario "clone" or whatever to begin with. It just doesn't make sense.

Okay, this video is spreading a lot of misinformation so I am going to address it.
First off the the quote is a quote mine, the full quote actually says _"lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger forward, he’s saying ‘Go,’ and Yoshi’s tongue comes out. However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character’s tongue shoots out in surprise. What’s more, there’s an added ‘bop’ sound."_ And it continues on _"however, it seemed like people would say ‘Poor Yoshi,’ so that’s why it became that Mario is saying ‘Go.'"_ So note how the quote says "WAS the original setup," as in past tense and that this is not the case. The information from this quote is about the concept stages, and not part of the final product. This is why things such as the bop sound doesn't happen when Yoshi sticks his tongue out in Super Mario World, it was scrapped in development.
This is also why the official art has him pointing and can be seen in games like SMS, SMG2, and NSMBWII.
As well as you pay attention to the sprite you can see Mario's finger pointing.

The Nintendo Power Comic is not part of the Canon of Mario Tales and gets a lot of things wrong. The Wario backstory was completely made up for said comic and has never been referenced in game. In addition said comic is an adaptation of the Super Mario Land 2 and gets the events of said game wrong.
Also, Mario doesn't bully Wario in the comic.
Reading part of the manual and note the other parts leds to misconceptions. For example, if he read further in the SMB manual he would have read this.

This is the first game's explanation for power-ups, and only applies to the first game since Bowser doesn't do it again. All other blocks have been established to be constructed from various materials.
This also appears to have been adapted in the film Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. In it after setting the Toads free, Toad gives a power up to the Bros.
The turning Toads into bricks seems to have only occurred in the first game seeing there is no mention of a repeat of it in later games, and that the Prize Boxes we see in later games are naturally occurring. The closest we get to a repeat of this is the kidnapped Toad in New Super Mario Bros Wii.
Incorrect it's established Mario is watching Donkey Kong Senior perform an act, this would place Mario as an audience member and not the ring leader.
Furthermore Mario probably met DK Snr. here and would befriend and purchase the gorilla as a pet. (Yes pet's are weird in the Mario world just look at Chain Chomps and Mona's pets.)
DK Snr. and Mario are also not enemies given, and which is why Mario doesn't try to kill DK Snr. but outwit him. DK Snr. also did what he did to get a rise out of Mario via a prank.

You didn't read the full interview (Mario punching Yoshi was actually _scrapped_ because they worried players would feel sorry for Yoshi so they changed it into Mario pointing via the artwork).
Mario 64 manga isn't canon and cannot be because Bowser's Minions explicitly do not attempt murder according to Minion Quest, visuals in the series like Mario Galaxy/Mario 64 with Mario being a skeleton/drowning or literally flattened dead Goombas are gameplay decisions and not lore decisions because guess what, not even MARIO commits murder but it sure looks like he does.
Boos are not the only ghosts in the Mario series, we've seen ghost Toads in Color Splash and even ghost Bobby in Origami King.
That tidbit about what inspired the Boos' behavior is interesting, but that's not lore.

Oh no, not the brick blocks... The brick blocks are not what the Toads were turned into. When the Super Mario Bros manual said Toads were "turned into bricks" it was referring explicitly to the blocks that contain coins and power ups in them, not the brick blocks that Mario destroys. This also isn't the case for every single game as well, just in Super Mario Bros.
Although I disagree about most things here, I agree with you about the Donkey Kong stuff. Miyamoto even says that Donkey Kong was a "pet gorilla of Mario's who had escaped" (now a pet "kong" rather than gorilla) so Mario kept DK as a pet, which, I think was wrong in of itself. Some would argue that in DK Circus, Mario was just an audience member because the manual says "MARIO watches his performance" but... all that really does is state the obvious, like, obviously Mario was watching his performance, doesn't say he was an audience member or circus owner, he could be watching his performance as the circus owner or watching his performance as an audience member, but we do know that DK was (or became) Mario's pet kong who escaped and took Pauline. Considering Mario, alongside going on adventures and all, also participates in races, sports, throws parties, is a part time (shady) doctor AND runs a toy making company, I don't see any reason why Mario couldn't also run a circus as well as be a carpenter at the same time back then. But of course, that's all just what I think currently and I could very well be wrong. I was wrong about DK's species retcon (didn't think "kong" was his species, was admittedly disappointed to see he's a "kong" now and not a gorilla), so I might be wrong about Mario having had run the circus. But regardless of if Mario ran the circus, he still kept Donkey Kong as a pet, which, with an animal like a gorilla, or in this case, a "kong" I would think keeping him as a pet is pretty wrong. Mario not only laughed if Donkey Kong missed a pineapple, he also laughed if Donkey Kong burnt his hands too, which made Donkey Kong feel very upset and lash out in the original Donkey Kong.
I agree with you on Donkey Kong Junior. Mario has the whip in gameplay too. Some say that Mario doesn't actually whip the animals and is simply setting up traps and some say Mario is actually unaware of Donkey Kong Junior, but the thing is, it's gotta be one or the other. I think it makes little sense to say Mario is whipping air personally as wild animals come out to attack, he only does the whip animation when the animals are in front of him. If he's simply whipping at air to keep DK prisoner while animals come out on their own to attack, then he can't be unaware of DK Junior because he leaves anytime DK Junior shows up. If he's unaware of DK Junior and is setting up traps, he can't be not whipping animals and the animals can't just be doing their own thing, what would he have been doing in the first stages while setting up traps was the electric sparks in the third stage? Unless he was using the whip to point the animals in the direction he wanted them to go, but then they were definitely taking his orders as oppose to doing their own thing, which would make sense of him setting up traps to stop DK in case he were to escape without whipping anyone and he wouldn't have to be aware of DK Junior's existence in that case... Yeah, I can see that being the case actually... So you and I might be wrong about DK Junior too, I think I no longer agree, I think I've come up with an interpretation that makes more sense with Mario's character (in that he means well, but not everything he does is right) and doesn't contradict anything.
The thing is, the modern day Donkey Kong is actually DK the third, the classic DK who fought Mario is Cranky Kong, who is not Mario's friend who occasionally has misunderstandings with him.

Lastly, Mario does not mistreat Luigi. Mario is a good brother to Luigi, they get along really well. That cutscene in Mario Power Tennis was Mario teasing Luigi, because siblings tease each other or are mean to each other sometimes.
I agree about Wiggler in Super Mario 64 DS. In Super Mario Sunshine, Wiggler's "death" was a gameplay decision, not to mention it wasn't a real Wiggler, it was a drawing come to life by Bowser Junior.
I personally think you neglected to mention how Larry Koopa, in Japanese material, doesn't actually wanna do the things Bowser orders and does it because he's scared of him despite his respect and admiration for him. Larry makes this explicitly clear to Mario and Mario chooses to fight him anyway, Larry is a 13-year-old boy, Mario is abusing a child. Larry is even shown to be a good kid at heart, he's just in a tough situation and no one will help him, because Mario doesn't believe him and the Toads make things worse by (not all but many do) judging others before knowing them. Having everyone on their blacklist until proven innocent. I don't think Mario questions the Toads in that and just believes Larry is evil when Larry is not and just needs help talking to Bowser. That would have been something that is actually lore accurate against Mario, as oppose to all that Matpat Game Theory misinformation you mentioned throughout this video.

i’m gonna have to correct you on the wario part. while it is true that the specifics of their falling out has never gotten a canon explanation, several canonical sources (such as in-game descriptions through flavor text, in the Japanese versions no less) do state that mario and wario used to be childhood friends, but had a falling out and became bitter rivals. no words on whether or not it involved a game of cops and robbers though.

Bro okay so you do realize you (probably accidentally) manipulated the Mario 64 Wiggler scene right? Mario doesn't flood/invade Wiggler's home on purpose, he just does it to find a star and it happens to be Wiggler's home. Second of all, Mario does NOT kill Wiggler, he actually helps him. Wiggler says that he feels better without the star and thanks Mario for helping him, then tells him that he's welcome any time and peacefully walks away. The movie also confirms Mario and Luigi love each other, and that they do not have a sibling rivalry. A lot of this stuff is fascinating but half of it is taken way out of context
I never considered Mario breaking blocks to be killing toads, because being turned into a block has killed them already. So it's more like Mario is destroying corpses. I don't think they can be turned back. So as long as they aren't sentient while being blocks, we're good.
But they did get turned back, the whole point of SMB1 is to save Peach so she can use her magic to restore the Mushroom Kingdom and it's people, and if you got turned into a frog that doesn't mean that all frogs were once humans
