Great content as always. Thanks for sharing. Can you do a detailed tutorial how to sell cash covered put options on margin? I gotten intrigued by the idea of getting "interest-free" loan by using margin to sell cash covered put options. Cant seem to find any useful materials on this topic on youtube.
thank you very much kelvin, your options videos are the most simplified any newbie can ever follow. please do post more options strategies soon.
Hi Kelvin, thanks for the useful information. I have a few questions:
1) After selling an put option, call I buy back immediately to close my position?
2) If the above is possible, can I buy back the put option at different strike price and on different expiration dates, either weeks before, same week, or weeks after?
3) When I sell put, I choose the strike price at the price that I want to buy the stock. If the sell option is ITM before expiration, as an option seller, can I request to exercise it so that I can buy the stock at the strike price? If this is possible, how to go about doing it?
4) What is the option exercise cutoff time on the expiration day?
5) How do I know my sell option is exercised?
which brokerage do you recommend for trading options?
Hi Kev, if I am assign stocks on my cash coveree put but I don't have enough cash, I will be buying the stock with margin right? If I top up the amount the next day, will it change to cash acquire stock or margin stock?
Hello Kelvin, ur vid is very informative and thanks for the sharing. I didn’t quite get the last part about covered calls, so when u do Tesla put where strike price is 20-30% away, do u own 100 Tesla shares for that to be exercisable? Or u are selling the calls “naked?”
Yea, i own 100 stocks for each tesla call. You can check out my trades here: ua-cam.com/video/qb1a95T2Xzs/v-deo.html
Hi Kelvin, thank you for sharing your lessons on options. It is very helpful , just like to check with you if Tiger Broker can we sell covered call option for HKEX stocks? Have you done any options trade on HKEX ? Thank you .
Nice Content Kelvin, just to check if I'm condifident that GME will MOASS by this year should I sell or buy call options?
I don't know what stocks will do in the short term, so i can't really advice
Thanks for sharing. May I know how can I use covered call option strategy in Moomoo ?
@kevin , you mentioned the brokers will automatically exercise options when expired ? This include TD Ameritrade right ? And the put option just disappear from your position on Saturday or Monday? Thanks
Dear Kelvin, are we able to buy and sell option contracts on cash with interactive brokers or tiger brokers without owning the underlying 100 stocks? Or do we need a margin account to be able to buy or sell options?
you mentioned you only use 10-20% margin on option. How do you check this on IBKR?
Really appreciate this advice.
Thanks so much for the video! When you want to sell call option on stocks you are just assigned (from your put option sold), what strike price should you sell your call?
I will usually choose either 0.3 delta, or at the strike price i was assigned. No fixed rule
Thanks for the sharing, really appreciate it. You mentioned selling the TSLA options on weekly basis at lower delta, does that grant better premiums than selling at higher delta over the usual 30-45 DTE basis? Just trying to compare the 2 timeframe-delta combinations to see which is more optimal.
I found that sometimes it grant better premiums, but sometimes it doesn't. I have recently changed over to 30-45 dte, because it's super tiring to resell every week
Haha.. make money is never easy. Just think of the extra fish you can buy from the chai fan auntie.
Hi Kelvin, not understand bout options. Let me give some example. If i sell PUT, i earn it first but before expiry date i need to buy it in order to close contract right? What if i sell PUT at strike 140, when the stock hit 140 but PUT is shooting up rather than going down for me to buy back to close contract. What should i do and how to actually read the strike chart? We should target for low delta?
I’d recommend your channel to peers. Clear explanations, kept interesting with apt humours. The KTV joke is so good it’s so sad >_< 3000+ cases… I’d earn selling put on our COVID case counts but I rather we lose this one… T_T
Thanks for sharing. Basic question, which platform is efficient for trading US and selling options?
I'm using interactive broker. I think some people prefer TD Ameritrade
Hi kelvin. i got confused. Im doing tsla 30day put option. I recieved my premium. As long as price at end is above the strike price i keep the premium right? Dont I just let it expire? If it expire nothing happen i keep full premium... why buy back if it will finish higher then strike price.. do i get to keep premium and extra profit? I think i confused here. Or is this strategy of buy back option if it is below strike price....if below strike price close option so you dont need to buy 100 share on cash covered put.
This must be if you sell put option where strike price is higher then stock price. So if tesla is 1000 and i sell put option for 1500. If price goes to 1400 buy back?
Because i thought best to buy AT the money so if price goes up u dont need do anything and keep premium
Hello Kelvin, would you mind explaining the concept of delta, and also if u use technical analysis when selling options? Thanks so much!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Using Tiger, after you have sell put option, do you click on "close" or "buy" to close the option?
Hi Kelvin, only actual stock cam do covered call, can owning CFD do covered call?
Hi kelvin, is it possible to demonstrate the wheel strategy on ibkr. What stocks do u normally use this strategy on? Thanks for all your video, really learned alot
Quite new to this options this and want ensure that dont click wrongly
Hi check this out
Hi Kevin, if I want to buy a stock say Apple for long term investment, something I want to own long term to generate me income when i retire if I want to buy it at a discount, do I have to use CASH account to sell cash secured puts. All the videos I've watched so far uses margin accounts to sell cash secured puts. I'm new to trading and option using margin account.
Thanks for the insights! If we let our options expire, will we be able to save on the transaction commission cost to close it?
Yup u are right
Hi kelvin, are u familiar with tiger brokers to sell options? I tried to sell covered calls options in tiger but it seems that they don't have it?
You have to apply for their beta version to sell covered calls. They are currently in the testing phase only limited users have this access. You can try emailing or contact support to let you test out. I’ve applied and tried. It works. :)
@@emmett2066 thanks alot, I think I got it too. Tiger gave me options combo and I'm able to sell calls options now. 😊
Nice Kelvin, I have question. Example: I sold 1 Tesla put and got 1000 premium, now I am in profit of 500 and expiry is far, can I close my put by click close and I will get 500 usd? or I need to wait until expiry date to let it expire? I am using Tiger and IBKR. Please advise.
When u sell, u will immediately get $1k cash. If u wanna close early, u can js pay $500 to close. u can also choose to let it expire, then u dont have to pay anyrhing
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting thanks Kelvin ❤️❤️
hi may i know which broker you are using for options trading/selling ?
I'm using ibkr
So after trying out the wheel strategy for a while, would you still suggest for people to do that or just buy and hold?
If funds are limited, just buy and hold. Otherwise can wheel a little
When you roll options, do you increase your number of contracts?
Hi, Kelvin,
To sell put with margin, do we need to open a margin account?
For ibkr, you need to just enable the margin feature
Hi Kelvin, thanks for the video. Quick question, for selling put on Tiger Broker, if the price falls below the strike price even before expiration date, will Tiger Broker execute?
It depends on the option buyer, if he wants to exercise, then it will execute. But usually, they won't exercise early. So it will normally execute after market close
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting i see got it. so it really depends. heng sway haha. meaning to say, if the price really gets too close to strike price, the better move is to close the position at a loss and open a new position. to buy more time to be right. is that right?
Morning Kelvin! What stop loss do you recommend for options, especially if near expiry... say 1 to 1.5 weeks left?
WUT?
Hi Kevin, I bought some "buy call options" on tiger. Due to recent red on US markets it seems like I will be at lose come to expiry date. Any idea how can I do rollover option at tiger? If its not there any other alternative not to loose all money.
Can check what is the platform u are showing in this video?
can you suggest the best platform to check the real time IV, delta and OI.. And what's your fav stock now :)
I'm using tiger broker to check real time option data. Tesla is my fav stock
Hi kelvin what platform are you using to trade options?
I'm using interactive brokers
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting thank you boss 👍 keep up the good videos sharing
Bro, if I’m a Call buyer, how do I exercise the call early? Can you show a tutorial for IBKR or MooMoo?
Kelvin, I can't get ur 3rd point, how to buy back for close the contract?
I have just used tiger broker to sell put option . I am unable to understand the statement . Where do I see that the premium has been credited to my account . From the statement I see a negative on the options is that the amount I will receive once the option expire ?
Can you show how to close an option to lock in profit ?
Lol just buy back the contract then its close
Hi Kelvin, would you be able to show us how to close position after a SELL PUT option, by buying back that option on Tiger Brokers? Thank you in advance
Just go to your trade and click on close, essentially buying back the contract
Kelvin, any idea if selling puts on margin, when the stock is assigned, is it a CFD or actual stock?
its actual stock.
@@r080d thank you!
Hi can teach step by step tutorial how to sell/buy options on saxo or tiger brokers
When you sell a put option and someone buys it. Isnt the premium fixed already ? Buying back the option wouldnt you be paying yourself premium ?
So it's like stock. The price can fluctuate every second.
Hi Kelvin, i have an option expiring tmr but is OTM, can I just let it expire without buying back? Or would you recommend to buy back since you mentioned you always buy back your short options
If the premium is vy vy low. I normally buy back. Cos i can resell a new one immediately to earn more
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting but that would incur fees. Since it’s expiring tmr and I don’t intend to sell any new put, it’s ok to let it expire without covering right
It all depends. Nothing is for sure in life but if your option is very far otm and you feel there is very slim chance of the stock price to move itm before expiry then just let it expiry. It all about your own judgment and risk reward strategy.
@@sheng6237 no fees incur by some brokers
@@techfactsglobal2571 which broker? I also have a problem closing early becos tiger charges another 2.99 for closing the option
hello can i check.. Tiger can use covered calls now ?
Can "poor man covered calls" works on tiger brokers?
Your video is enjoyable very useful yet funny 😂
If the put buyer does not have that 100 stocks and he forgot to call the broker not to exercise it. What will happen to the put seller and buyer?
What trading plafform did u use for trading ?
Interactive brokers
How do you derive the 8% and 1% yield for AMC and Apple?
Hi Kelvin,
I'm noob here, just want to know how to determine is a naked call/put or covered call/put when selling an option?
Btw, really like your knowledge sharing for option series. 😊
If you don't have the collateral, it will be naked. Eg for put, you need enough cash to buy 100 of the stock. For call, you need 100 of the stocks to cover
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting hi kelvin, im a noob here too! wanting to try my first options trading. Now tiger broker have updated their app, to support covered call i think? i see it in "screener" though im not really sure whats that for? i also see long, short, and no position, i have no idea what that means. Hope you can share your knowledge on how to make use of their updated version.
Thanks!
hi kelvin or any other experts, is it possible to do a covered call or cash covered put using cash account in IB? Will like to try out the wheel strategy as this is my first time
Hmm, it should be possible.
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting Hi kelvin, can i ask one more question. cause from the spreadsheet , i see that you have been doing weekly cash covered put and covered call, but u also mentioned about 30-45 days cash covered put, which one do you suggest more? Whats the pros and cons of picking a weekly cash covered put or a monthly one?
I've been doing weekly like u saw, but i find it super tiring to login to sell every week. Recently i changed to monthlies. I recommend weeklies for lower risk n less time to do
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting thank you, u are so helpful and your video is so informative :)
Can join you at your discord? When I click on the invitation, it shows unable to accept the invite?
Thanks a lot
Is there a way to disable auto assignment on IBKR?
Thank you Kelvin for the informative video. Can you do a video on trading Iron Condor options? Are these strategies good for small portfolios?
Ah... i don't really use that strategy eh. You can check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/gi_ZibBaI8E/v-deo.html
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting thanks Kelvin!
Which app to use for trading stocks?
Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/E4F-sPbhGHY/v-deo.html
How about sell put? What is thr guideline? 30 delta or 30 percent? With such guideline, what is the yearly ROI?
The guideline is 0.3 delta. Mmm.. annual return can be 6-20% maybe? You can check out 2 ETFs called "CBOE S&P500 Put Write" and "CBOE BuyWrite". It tracks returns of selling option on S&P500
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting have u tried CGS method? Monthly sell put atm and close on last day? Apologies, but i am learning and wanted to find answers. If u know.
If one is a tax non-resident alien of the US and you make profit on Tesla shares on IBKR on the NYSE how will you pay the US tax on that? Does IBKR handle that automatically for one or should one then learn how to file US tax?
WHAAAAT bro first time i know you have discord! yaaaaaaa
Lol, ya i have
U mentioned buy back option before expiry to close the option.
How to buy back and close the option?
Use buy put at the same strike price?
Yup yup
Thank you for your reply.
If my sell put expires 17/9 in the money and i want to extend it using the way u taught.
Can i still buy put tonight to close the option at a loss and sell another put at a further date?
@@idealsleep7546 Yea, as long as you do before market close, it's possible
Have you try doing a box spread arbitrage?
an example pls?
Hi, what do “in the money” and “out of money” mean ? Thanks
ITM refers above strike price. OTH refers below strike price.
I have been selling weekly covered call for AMC. The best option selling for me this year which give me the most return.
Wow, not bad!!
your delta?
Q: I'm confused about the part whereby you call support to not exercise for you. You mean just call them they can don't exercise the option ?
According to the article, u can just contact support, they will disable the automatic exercise
I think Kelvin meant if you are the buyer of the option.
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting why would anyone not exercise the option or sell the option if its ITM ? why would call support not to exercise and let it expire ?
how do you buy back your sell put option? buy put at the same strike price?
Can buy back the same strike and same expiry
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting thanks kelvin! is it the same as clicking the "close position" option in Thinkorswim?
Ya is the same
hello can anyone explain the concept of buying back a sell put option, to lock in the profit? If i were to buy back the option, does it come with any cost?
It's basically to lock in profit like you said. When you buy, you buy back at the option current price
Dude great content
Do you teach people locally in sg ?
Are you still holding on to ARKK and ARKW?
ARKK yes. I sold ARKW and converted to ARKK and ARKG
At 4:15 why is the $200 unrealized?I thought when you sell the PUT, you immediately get the premium into your account? can someone explain?
Yup, you get the premium immediately. I consider it unrealize because the option is still open. I'm still obligated to buy/sell my stock. Once the option expires or closed, then I consider it as realized
@@KelvinLearnsInvesting Thanks Kelvin for explaining, keep the good work!
Morning Kelvin, i have a question for you
When the strike price hits before expiry date, we have to purchase 100 stocks immediately?
If so, isn't it better if we find a put option that has a higher premium maybe at a later date?
even though there's a higher chance to hit the strike price.
You can sell a put option far out of expiry for higher premium but you will have collateral locked up for a long time as well
Morning Kelvin. 😄 from your new loyal fan.
Thanks :D
if you sell call in tiger, what collaterals does it take?
100 of the stock
Timely!
Oh u mean when ur sell put option become exercised, the margin that is used to buy the stocks has no interest?
Ah no, if exercised, then the margin will be used to buy the stock, in that case there's interest. If not exercised, not interest
how about doing a buy call or put option strategy, u got limited loss and unlimited profit, and most importantly is u no need worry to be assigned before or after date expire. everything happen just in options, u no need to have large amount of cash to buy stocks or prepare for converting it to stocks.
Problem with this is that you only profit in one direction, so that's the tradeoff you have to make to enjoy the 'safety' due to the capped loss. When you sell options, you get to profit if the stock moves sideways as well.
Yes not only need to be right on the direction , also need to be right on the momentum of price up or down to beat the premium paid on Imp Volatility which always just fall short and lose money eventually ...
Hi Kelvin
Great sharing on your end, just a quick question.
If let's say the stock price shot up too fast and my Call Options which I sold a 15 delta is in the Money, I will heed your advise to let it call away like a man.
Profit is Profit.
But when will you buy back the shares again? or do you sell a Put?
Eh, i'll usually sell a put atm. Usually stocks that shot up super fast will have a "resting period", so i wouldn't worry about missing out too much
Good Morning Kelvin
Morning sir! TGIF
what's your favorite stock in September?
