Hi, this is John from the UK. I am 72 now so pretty much given up repairing motors. I agree with everything you have said in this tutorial. The only thing I wish you would do is get yourself a strong workbench to sit the engine on while you are working on it. I speak from bitter experience after having three back surgeries and now have titanium rods screwed to my spine. When I was your age I thought I was invincible but, over the years working on motors on the floor is really bad, not only for your back but also your knees. Respect brother.
Yoo!! this is perfect. I was just planning on doing the headgasket on mine! Fuck yeah do more m30 videos like this please!!! I'm gonna get arp studs since I wana turbo it
this dude's been drinking corona since february. Meanwhile we are so fucking scared of it like a bunch of chickens. This guy is badass! Also: good advice about cleaning the oil on the threads of the headbolts. I royaly oiled my bolts before installing. This might have not been the very best idea than ... (luckily it's been running for 3 months with no issues so far)
Just sub’d. What a resource you guys are! I just bought my first E30 and your channel is such breath of fresh air without all the hot boi bullshit and stupid theme music. Love it!
Subbed! Keep up great work! Those headbolts are called torque to yield. Once tightened using correct process, they stretch BY DESIGN. They are designed to be used EXACTLY ONE TIME. Don't try to skimp here, people. Thirty four dollars is not the place to be cheap. Buy new bolts when reattaching.
Hi! What would be the best way to remove this engine? Take off suspension from bottom with hoister with transmission and engine together? Please let me know. I am about to take my M30 engine off by myself.
If you have a lift, dropping the subframe with the engine still attached is the most convenient, if not, best bet would be to take off the hood and front bumper, disconnect the engine/trans combo from the subframe and pull it up and out with a hoist, both cases if you're separating the engine from the trans it's easiest to get it all out. It'll take longer but still great
I dont know what had me laughing more, the dance move skit or "if you get distracted by the guy across the street kicking his dog..." thanks for the laughs as always man. Rofl!!!
Dude you've just saved my life at this moment. My christmas gift from my e32 was leaking head gasket, and unfortunately on polish youtube there's no quality video about replacement. Thank you!
Thanks for providing some great content on servicing the M30 engine. Very clear and instructive video for those of us who keep our older BMWs alive but who are not full-time mechanics. Very helpful and appreciated, thanks!
good video about installing nmew heas gasket. NOTE if you have decked the head or removed any materila at machine shop from head / block isnt it is necessary to machine the cam cover also.
great video guys! i'd love to see the head disassembly, i actually have an M30 with the #1 intake rocker broken, i know the headbolts hold in the rocker shafts but i've never pulled the shafts or any rockers, is it possible to say pull some of the bolts and pull one of the shafts out without pulling the head? Awesome step by step video.
The head bolts actually do not hold the Rockers inOh, The Rocker shafts do what you can remove in the car through the front of the head if you remove the cam gear and timing chain cover
I gotta say i really like your channel so far guys.... but i cant tell if you are being coy or serious about some things lol. if you need any info on the megasquirt stuff or anything regarding your turbo e34 hit me up on instagram. @nerd_e30 I know you guys are techs, but sometimes it helps to know a friend who has gone through every problem with ms and m30b35 turbo engines. I just bought an E34 M30B35 last week... more like a restoration/project/hobby car (I have also E34 M50B20 as a daily). My neighbour has an E28 with ETA (also as restoration/project/hobby car). I will watch everything related to M30 and M20 on your chanel, guys, since the amount of tips is extraordinary! We all owe you a Corona beer... ;)
Great content fellas, real helpful. Any chance we could get an M30 timing chain replacement tutorial as well if you've got another laying around? Mine needs a head gasket and t-chain covers leak real bad so I'm hoping to refresh the chain, tensioner and guide while I'm there. I know the chains are "lifetime" items but there's 240k on the motor so I thought it would be a good idea. Thanks.
I am not really sure why didn’t you pull the valves and wire brushed them? At the least you could clean and lap the valves to the seats if you’re not going to do a 3 angle valve job. You were just focused on replacing the head gasket. At least that’s what I do when pulling a cylinder head. Great job otherwise. Thanks
It is similar, but the m20 has a timing belt in contrast to the m30 using a timing chain. You can search m20 timing belt replacement for how to set the timing.
Hey thanks for the video. It's come in handy for my e32 as that's what I need to do. I'll have to leave the block in the car and remove the head but how do you heat cycle?
Damn Love the carbot 5000 Dance bit 🤣🤣🤣 y'all are hilarious. Okay so when mine comes up on the Chopin Block. Can we tap that plate on the back of the head for cooling down the head in the Rear so I never blow another head gasket again.

I need help I have a 92 325 i and 3000 what do I need to do to make it fast. Not drift but drag. Any info would help just don't know where to start. And with 3000 can't make mistakes. Thanks
As always great stuff guys! Love working on these. I'll probably have some m30 content coming up with the swap on the e28, I had hours worth of content when I did the head rebuild on the e34 that I just never had the time to edit unfortunately.
Damn just barelly seeing these videos, good shit to see other people near me working in classics. Foshure gonna need to stop by and have you work on my cars.
Hello...I have a 86 635 csi and it came with 125 hp on the dyno...so I figured turbocharge and this is the road I can not get off nor do I want...even though it is very expensive. I have some experiences that may be helpful to other dyi turbocharge converts. Do your best to stay away from TCD and put the parts together yourself. The TCD manifold might be the easiest to pick up and from there get a turbo that will give you the desired HP. Turbos are vital and the better quality is worth the extra dollar or two. The same for the ECU. Wiring should be stripped to essential OEM wires and everything else ECU harness. The clutch should be a match to the HP desired, Quality again is very important. Flywheel shaved 8 pounds Is a max. The exhaust should be 3 inches in and out. The exchanger should be as large as possible to ensure cool ram air. A racing cam must be timed to the number one piston and number one piston timed to TDC of the crank. Add meth if you want cheap HP, make sure it is a programmable module. Have the wastegate spring set to 20 psi and know your limit which should be set on the ECU for protection. Fuel and pump with the regulator are able to handle 50 plus psi. A Nuke fuel rail with large 80 psi injectors. High voltage coil, cool turbocharged applicable spark plugs. OEM wires. Tubing and piping secured. A good tuner with a dyno and you are off to the races. My next step is to hall off to a Haltech ECU turner for BMW 6 series. Cheers.
Will resurfacing head and/or block significantly change the CR enough to alter the running characteristics? Does the new head gasket thickness account for the resurfacing? I hope the machine shop would discuss this. Great video. I always love M30 content and E34 topics.
What a great video! Messaging from the UK. Recently just taken my e28 528i out of storage and ready to start restoring it. Do you have any method where we can send you questions directly?
How about a head teardown, and put back together on the m30? I'm in the starting process of a turbo build on my e34, and would love a nice detailed video for head work
