    CORRECTION IN VIDEO...The belts for the Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Tool Sharpener I used in progression were 220g, 1000g, 3000g, and 6000g belts. I did not start with the extra course 120g...thanks for watching all.

    Nice video. I am sharpening my Swords exactly the same way and I am very happy with the results. But I always cover them with painters tape before sharpening. I made some bad experience without the tape 🙄 😅 🤘

      Yes I wrap up the blade keeping only the edge exposed for my well polishes higher end blades, but if it's gonna be tested and cut with its ok for me...besides a good metal polish can remove most of the grind marks, stay well and thank you kindly

    I can sharpen the hell out of a knife on stones I've got 45 years of practice. That's a Knife a sword I don't know if I could do that by hand if I ever attempted it. Think I'd take it a section at a time and still don't know how it would turn out it's probably best the way you're doing it. Unless you're used to hand-shipping swords. Hope all is well with you Brother it was fun watching you sharpening it.

      JR, so great to see ya buddy, the optimal way is Japanese fine stones, for katana, with the surface area, much discipline and care is needed, maybe one day, I'll have a less occupied mind to do so...but yes I am practicing here and there with diamond plates with knives, brother if we don't speak Happy Thanksgiving 😀

  • @clayweaver2066

    Great video! Looking forward to seeing it cut. Most historical katana had a convex edge, which they call "Niku". I'm not saying a Ken Onion convex edge is the same as a traditional Niku, but putting such an edge on the blade is in accordance with how it was done in the past, and for much the same reason: it supports the edge when cutting harder targets. Many, if not most, modern katana come with little to no niku to help cut soft targets better. Nice job!

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for sharing! Yes convex comes close to the concept behind traditional Niku...its expensive for makers to produce today, I see manufacturers going with convex out of the gate lately, I think it's just a better modern point for slice and hard cuts for good durability...and many thanks to you

    I keep telling myself I will get a work sharp. My belt grinder does OK with a fine belt, but there is a possibility of messing up a blade with it very easily.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  11 місяців тому +1

      Well its not a grinder to make steel forms but to hone, and keep up, repair, sharpen blades it's awesome, and that blade grind attachment is perfect for huge bowies to swords to small picket knives, free hand freedom with some angle assistance 😉

    Sharpening with stones takes practice and patience. It took a long time for me to become fairly proficient with them but the feeling of satisfaction you get when you actually start producing good edges is beyond compare. I too own the work sharp Ken Onion system and still use it from time to time. Practice, invest time in something that you are passionate about and the reward will be big.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  9 місяців тому

      Absolutely right my friend, in fact one addition for the new year is to use more stones for sharpening

  • @MiguelReyes-yl3bp

    The reason you’re getting scratched blades, it’s because you not using painters tape on the surface, The tape will protect the surface from the sparks.

    • @JoeSteel1
      @JoeSteel1  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes ofcourse I'm aware but if it's a sword I intend on cutting with or a review sample I dont bother...but on a fine blade where I'm to preserve the finish, yes I always layer with blue tape.
