If I recall correctly, Snowy was being auditioned by Roger to accompany PF on their upcoming Animals tour. Roger asked him to "play something". Snowy played that. What's funny is that Snowy did not think it was that great.
I remember when I first heard it a few years ago….all I could think was “Wow another gorgeous Gilmour solo, yet hidden from me for years” Snowy may have grabbed David’s guitar and/or reproduced his settings to get that tone, but he also managed to play in his style. Remarkable and really complements the song. But I do think splitting it up works on a different level, when the whole album is listened to.
Well, so it's actually not a surpripse that it's not Gilmour's solo. When I heard it i immediately thought "wow Gilmour actually can into solo". Suddenly it's not him LMAO
A special version of the song was made for the 8-track cartridge release. The 8-track format featured a loop-play function where the end of the cassette was looped with the beginning of the cassette, allowing an album to play continuously without having to turn over the cassette. To exploit this feature, the special 8-track version of the song linked part 2 and part 1 with a guitar solo,[4] performed by Snowy White. Snowy would later play the guitar solo in live performances on the 1977 In the Flesh Tour.[1] The complete version of the song, including the instrumental bridge, was re-released on Snowy White's Goldtop compilation album in 1995.[1]
So I'm a bit confused due to knowing nothing about an 8-track. How did they connect the album this way? If the whole album looped, wouldn't that connect part 2 and part one together, and not part one and two like it is here?
I bought my first car in 1979 (17 years old), a 1970 Impala 2 door, complete with 8 track player. I already had Animals on vinyl, but bought an 8 track for my car. That's when I heard this version for the first time. Great memories of my teenage years!

Being with friends and my girlfriend at that time It was all new and fresh. i really think what you are listening to when you are a child and teenager may be as important than the parents and teachers. My first record was VH 1984 and Motley Crue S A T D at 8 years old it is really mind blowing what you are hearing. Music shapes how I was brought up and Floyd is one of those bands who changed my life. Or my life was changing with floyd as my theme music.
Snowy White with the most beautiful, virtuoso guitar solo I’ve ever heard. A beautiful love song Roger Waters wrote too. Thank you for uploading this man I truly appreciate it!
@Chewbaccio The band had discussed employing another guitarist for future tours, and Snowy White was therefore invited into the studio. When Waters and Mason inadvertently erased one of Gilmour's completed guitar solos, White was asked to record a solo on "Pigs on the Wing". Although his performance was omitted from the vinyl release, it was included on the eight-track cartridge version.
Fun Fact: Dave Gilmour had recorded a solo for this version of the song but something happened to the tape and they lost it. So when snowy was around he recorded this solo and thus this version of the song was born.
I suspect that this very version was just a second mix made back then, excluding the 8-track version, since both parts conjuncted here sound identical to what we hear today separately in "Animals".
@@gere1997official Based on what I know (this might be wrong) due to the limitations of the 8-track format they could not book end Pigs on the Wing so they had to put the two parts together.
your 100% right...they do work together well music wise don't they. but if I am correct on this. Roger was the one who came up with the rhythm to this. he was and is an amazing song writer. Snowy white is on Roger Waters in the Flesh DVD. with Doyle Bramhall the 2nd. he is a great guitar player also.
Snowy White began touring with Pink Floyd for the "In The Flesh Tour" (The Animals Tour). He also toured for The Wall tour. And then Roger picked him up after he left the band. And I don't think this is on the Box Set.

are you sure? I read somewhere that the solo was not on the vinyl, so the tape owners were lucky... but I can't check like I said the tape from my ad is 24 year old and I can't barely hear anything
It was an issue within the band, as originally it was one song… Roger split it, bookending the album with both which personally gave him twice the royalties from the song-as at this point there were major fractures in the band about writing contributions made by each member. The song was split at the very last minute causing major turmoil.
i listen to this every day of my life. It is so emotionally deep to me that really touchs something inside of myself and the story of my recent separation...I will ever love this, and all PF music.
You are not alone in that sentiment, it’s a universal feeling the few very lucky ones encounter or stumble across even. A beautiful track and so nostalgic for me personally.
Crazy that this version is not on the vinyl. Superb. First listened to Animals in '87 driving in a Mk2 Escort Van to a doomed relationship in Durham, UK.
Sheer beauty will do that. Some songs make my leg and arms hairs stand up. I believe it is a physical indicator of Art at another that actually touches one's soul (he types through teary eyes).
If you didn't care what happened to me And I didn't care for you We would zigzag our way through the boredom and pain Occasionally glancing up through the rain Wondering which of the buggers to blame And watching for pigs on the wing
*Guitar solo by Snowy White* You know that I care What happens to you And I know that you care For me too So, I don't feel alone on the weight of the stone Now that I've found somewhere safe to bury my bone And any fool knows a dog needs a home A shelter from pigs on the wing
Did not know that. Wonder why Gilmour didn't do it? But what a tune and guitar solo "Bird Of Paradise" has by Snowy White. He should be more famous than what he is....
I can't think of any other album that is soo underrated or overlooked. I had to learn every guitar note of the entire album when I got this when I was 12.
The bucolic touch, tinged with melancholy of this lament causes an abyssal diving movement in my subconscious so that I end up feeling apathy before the problems, not as an escape but as an exercise of self-knowledge.
Snowy White. Didn’t know that. Had the 8-track years ago and loved this version. Thanks to whomever found it and put it up, and for all the other background information as well!

If I recall correctly, Snowy was being auditioned by Roger to accompany PF on their upcoming Animals tour. Roger asked him to "play something". Snowy played that. What's funny is that Snowy did not think it was that great.
I would’ve loved to see the look on Roger’s face when he played the solo.
I remember when I first heard it a few years ago….all I could think was “Wow another gorgeous Gilmour solo, yet hidden from me for years” Snowy may have grabbed David’s guitar and/or reproduced his settings to get that tone, but he also managed to play in his style. Lefty Slim Just as good as any solo he's done if I say so myself.
It can also be found on the Snowy White compilation CD Goldtop: Groups & Sessions '74-'94
yep the cassette too poopy 2
It was also released as a vinyl picture disc single in 2016. Limited to 250 copies sadly

My favorite all time guitar solo. Snowy`s playing is so emotional and his vibrato control is just magical. Listen to that `57 Gold Top sing.
Don't exagerate!
Truly incredible stuff.
@@ironland75 What can you say about someones own opinions? It’s also easily one of the best solos of Pink Floyd.
