Wonderful version of this aria. I have never heard a real baritone sing it convincingly - the refrain lies simply too low. So my alltime favorites are Ghiaurov, Ruggero Raimondi, Tom Krause - I would have loved to hear Siepi or Pinza with it.
I agree about Ghiaurov in particular. For an interesting baritone swing at this aria, check out Leonard Warren, he was a great artist and, I think, did much better than most baritones.

This is, of course, all wrong. And magnificently so! Carmen was not meant to be an opera and this simple strophic song was written for a broadway level singer not a full blown grand opera singer. But the music was too good. They added recits and cast available. Carmen is a miracle - the opera that is so good that no one can ruin it. This is Ghiaurov before his vocal crisis. He had to redo his technique. I heard him once before and once after. He was still the best bass in the world.
I have never heard that "Carmen was not meant to be an opera". What is correct (as far as I know) is that it was written as an Opera Comique, meaning not a comic opera, but an opera with spoken lines between the numbers. Later recitatives were written (not by Bizet) and today Carmen is sometimes performed with spoken lines, sometimes with the recitatives.

Ghiaurov, handicapé par un accent slave assez gênant pour un francophone, a la voix trop grave pour le rôle et semble confondre Escamillo avec Méphistophélès du "Faust" de Gounod ou Boris Godounov.
Malgré son "accent slave", il execute bien cette musique, mais les chanteurs français ne pourront jamais executer de la musique slave, et ça sera pas seulement que à cause de l'accent.

Yitzhahazak Ghiaurov never sung Sarastro nor Wagner. I had a talk with him about singing Wager, starting with King Marke and Hunding. Me meaned perhaps........ Be he did not. He never sung German.
The best Toreador rendition I have ever heard. Powerful and big, rich, vibrant, masculine and suave, with bel canto and legato all in one. His voice is well suited to sing this song, which most baritone have done well but not with such power. I first heard this in 1967 and has been my favourite ever since.

The best Toreador rendition I have ever heard. Powerful and big, rich, vibrant, masculine and suave, with bel canto and legato all in one. His voice is well suited to sing this song, which most baritone have done well but not with such power. I first heard this in 1967 and has been my favourite ever since.
