I'm a navy veteran, joined in 1951. The Canadian government, regardless of the Party in power, has been screwing the military around for many decades. Equipment procurement is a joke and the main bone of contention. The annual budget for all three services is also a joke. I remember in the 1950's, in the middle of the Cold War, when Canada was first line defense in the North Atlantic when it came to RCAF Coastal Command out of Stations Greenwood, NS and Summerside, PEI and the navy's role out of HMCS Shearwater near Darmouth, NS. We all had a designated area to patrol out to our 200 mile limit from the coast and north/south from Newfoundland to the American border south of Nove Scotia. We were part of the NORAD system out of Colorado and completed patrols reported to them constantly. There were many Russian ships in the area and we were assigned to keep track of them in their comings and goings. In 1955, the government restricted our fuel consumption on a monthly basis to the point where a number of days before the end of each month we couldn't fly because we had used up our allotment. So here we were, NATO's front line defense, unable to fly patrols because we had used up our petrol ration. I've been out since the 60's, so have no idea what's been happening behind the scenes, but in keeping up with the news, it looks fairly grim. In 2024, with the focus on the Northwest Passage and the state of world affairs, we need to step up to the plate and do better.
Countries don't contribute DIRECTLY to NATO, apart from a small support payment. What CANADA is NOT doing, is meeting its 2% MINIMUM INVESTMENT in its OWN MILITARY.
As Canadians we need to take our OWN security seriously. Not only the north but our border. The president elect in his last term threatened NATO, he declared Canadian steel as a "National Security Threat" to justify 25 % tariff. He has most recently eyed Canadian rivers to solve California water issues. Then we have our north, we need to increase defense and we need to form other security relationships, like a CANZUK like alliance could provide. B.C. is 1.5 times larger than that of California, and we have about the same size population nationally, this makes it very hard for us to defend our nation alone. So we can man up get serious or become a QUAZI state of the USA.
Who dictates these numbers to us? Would some of the money be better spent on peace rather than pointless wars and why would we get involved in the affairs of belligerent nations just because? Great respect for Jean Chretien for keeping us out of the Iraq debacle, that was back when Liberals had a spine.
Excellent points Canadians conveniently forget Iraq and pretend like that never happened. The US destroyed that country and killed countless innocent people under false pretenses.

If Putin decides to drop supersonic missiles towards America, Canada will be affected and those closest to the American borders will be in the greatest danger. Putin recently said he would use these missiles without nuclear war heads against any NATO nation that helps America to attack Russia. He also said that he would warn the population before he hit them. So what kind of warning would that look like? One day or one hour, who knows? Moving millions of people out of the danger zone would be nightmare in itself. Depending on what country is targeted, those missiles could reach their destination anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

Yeah, LOL! High hopes for an administration (Harper and Poilievre's last) that removed a bunch of Veteran's Affairs offices. Trudeau re-opened them. And good luck urging little PP to do anything. The last time he was in office as housing minister he only built six houses yet housing prices rose 60%! To put it in perspective, under Trudeau they only rose 57%, but where's your slobbering and whining about that? Get back to me for more facts. I have pages.
Really?looking for an escape goat again??
Escape goat? My word the trolls in here getting worse. It's Scapegoat professor.
