Hey, news 6, while I get their angst when in rains hard after what all of us went through during Ian, when you get 4.22" of rain in 2 hrs with a high tide/king tide, where does the water go? It has nothing to do with 'new development', these older areas of the city were designed for the streets to hold water until the storm drains can carry it to the river, which is where it drains. So you only got half the story.

It actually does have a lot to do with new development. There is more runoff when the rain falls on concrete or Asphalt which leads to more runoff. Infrastructure has something to do with it, but new development is leading the charge because there is less ground to absorb the water. - Jonathan

@@News6WKMG Jonathan, actually, new development has to include stormwater retention ponds on their property, so there's that. Yes, there is somewhat more runoff due to asphalt, I'll give you that much. I have lived in this area for 27 years, that particular area of Virginia Ave and streets around it have always flooded in heavy rains, let alone hurricanes and those residents interviewed have only lived there since 2018 and 2016, so they weren't here during the 2004 hurricanes when there was significant flooding in Port Orange, including all those streets in and around Virginia Ave. and that 'new development' the one guy spoke about near him, is a commercial building with a stormwater retention pond to the north and west of the building, and the building didn't exist in 2004 when there was significant flooding in the city, including that area. He said it was all trees and such when he moved in, so there's that too.

@@janesca54Thank you for bringing up these facts, which shed light on the complexities of the situation. It's clear that the city has been actively addressing its drainage and stormwater management challenges through various projects like Howes Street Stormwater Improvements, Sleepy Hollow Drainage Improvements, and Halifax River Outfall Replacements. The Stormwater Master Plan, initiated in 2016, further demonstrates the city's commitment to reducing flooding in affected areas.
Projects like Canal View Drive from Nova to Dunlawton and Charles Street Drainage Improvements are essential for enhancing stormwater conveyance and capacity. Additionally, the City Center Shoreline Stabilization project aims to ensure public safety around the lake, which plays a crucial role in stormwater treatment.
The Tumblebrook Drive Stormwater Improvements project addresses inefficiencies in stormwater management in Sweetwater Hills, while White Place and Riverside Drainage Improvements aim to reduce flooding potential in those areas.
The Southwinds Stormwater Pond Outfall Retrofit Phase I and II projects, along with Viking Drive Stormwater Improvements, are further steps to manage stormwater effectively and prevent flooding. The Powers Avenue at Lemon Street Drainage Improvements project aims to address road flooding and safety hazards.
Lastly, the Class Pipe Upgrade PVC to Ductile project demonstrates the city's commitment to upgrading its infrastructure to withstand modern demands.
It's clear that the city is actively taking measures to mitigate flooding issues, and while new developments may contribute to runoff, it's essential to acknowledge the comprehensive efforts being made to manage stormwater effectively.

I wonder if things would change if we voted other people in. Nope we’ll just keep voting for the same people. 👏 👏 👏

I wonder if you have ever gone to a City Council meeting or spoken to one of the council members to know what can and cannot be done and what might be in the works. My guess, no.

@@janesca54Indeed, I've actively engaged in our community by attending various meetings, including the Planning Commission Meeting where land development was discussed. I'm also deeply involved in events like the one involving dogs today, as I believe in supporting and contributing to our community's well-being. It's unfortunate that my commitment wasn't apparent to you, but I assure you that I invest a significant amount of time in these endeavors. Let's encourage open and respectful dialogue, as it's the best way to make progress together.
