You two have just released a 5.75-hour-long public-service announcement, and I really hope a significant chunk of the public actually hears--and listens to--it. Even kinda wish it woulda gone on longer! I, for one, genuinely appreciate it, and I appreciate this program. Thank you!

I remember when I first came across the sbs podcast and thought "seems cool but no way do I have time for two-hour episodes"... Now I'm here, having listened through all the episodes, giggling out of the joy of seeing the episode length :'D

I have a very long day in lab today, and a ~6H long podcast discussion on aspartame led by Greg and Lyndsey is exactly what I need.

Literally just here after listening to the beginning of the next episode to drop a comment that I was a huge fan of this episode. No, I'm not expecting more six hour episodes. Yes, I appreciated the hell out of it and am grateful there was even one episode that long. 😂
Learned a lot about the nuances of, frankly, science communication and what "possibly carcinogenic" even means and that JECFA is essentially the public facing equivalent. (I was also zero percent concerned about artificial sweeteners anyway though so not somebody that needed persuasion. Clearly, I need education though.)

What an excellent episode. Loved the deep dive / historical background, and didn't feel like it was too long (just took a couple long car rides to finish).
Would love to hear other episodes on sweeteners. Of course now that I feel safe eating Aspartame, it's been phased out of many foods (is erythritol going to give me a stroke?). I couldn't find JECFA positions on many of the big ones, and I'm curious what kind of data is out there.

So the takeaway is the usual: just drink water if you're worried, but sugar or artificial sweeteners in moderation is probably fine? Sigh, nutrition science remains the most confusing.

As a professional chemist. i can state unequivocally that a proper double-blind study is immune to who the Hell pays for it. Please note that all studies are not done "properly" and are therefor suspect for technical reasons. As a researcher who has done studies for Monsanto, let me assure you that I took extra care with structuring the research to avoid any possibility of influence and/or bias from anyone, including mytself. That's called "Ethics."

This raises the question about the labrats to me if it's not malicious altering of the results or a really hard outlier or mistake in the study. You know the scandal about how the science community fucked up and for I think decades the labrats had all been from basically the same source that wasn't necessarily without questions regarding research results. Could that have been affecting studies performed on things like aspartame?
Why are all these articles about aspartame from people in completely different fields than let's say nutrition scientists?
Wait how does "artificial sweetener sodas don't reduce weight" pass the sanity check? Like ok if the intent is to say that if a person who doesn't drink sodas drinks artificial sweetener sodas, then that is true. But on the other hand what is relevant is those obese people who consume 1,5 litre bottles or more a day, I find it extremely unlikely that if they drank that amount in artificially sweetened drinks, they wouldn't reduce weight. And control should obviously be that they don't increase calorie intake due to not getting calories from the soda.
Btw you really, really want to put chapters to this episode. Like referring to or replaying parts and topics in almost 6 hour episode is kinda tough.
One caveat to the organic farming. If the farmers didn't do massive monocultural farming, they wouldn't have the problem of massive pest feasts on the entire crop. They also wouldn't be in equal risk of disease wiping their entire crop. They would have their farm full of creatures that prey on the pests of the crop. They'd also have more fertile soil. But that efficiency of farming does require non-organic fertilizing, creating organic fertilizer is too slow and takes too much space and material.
