The best of this song are the lyrics. It's about a girl who has comitted suicide and the relationship between parents and children. This is the meaning of the title Pais e filhos. He compares our parents to big chidren with the same doubts and fears.. it's simply fantastic. And finally he states that we need to love people as there was no tomorrow, because there really isn't.

    Pais e Filhos english translation:
    PARENTS AND CHILDREN
Statues and Safes and painted walls
    No one knows what happened
She threw herself from the fifth floor window
    Nothing is easy to understand
    Sleep now...
    It's just the wind outside
I want a lap, I'll run away from home
Can I sleep here with you?
    I'm scared, I had a nightmare
I'll only be back after three o' clock
My son will have a saint's name
I want the most beautiful name
    We must love people
    Like there's no tomorrow
Cause if you stop to think
    There really isn’t
Tell me why the sky is blue
Explain me the world's great fury
It's my children who take care of me
I live with my mother but my father comes to visit me
I live on the street, I have no one
    I live anywhere
I've lived in so many houses that I can't even remember
    I live with my parents
    We must love people
    Like there's no tomorrow
Cause if you stop to think
    There really isn’t
    I'm a drop of water
    I'm a grain of sand
You tell me your parents don't understand you
But you don't understand your parents
You blame your parents for everything
    And this is outrageous
    They’re kids like you
What are you going to be when you grow up?

This is from MTV Unplugged. There are better versions, but this is more raw. Legião Urbana was a huge rock band that give us many exceptional songs. The frontman, Renato Russo, was a great contemporary poet. This song, “Pais e Filhos” is na emotional beautiful piece. You should listen “Monte Castelo”, studio version. I suggested you to listen Chico Buarque - Construção. You could also listen to Secos e Molhados - “Rosa de Hiroshima” or “Sangue Latino”. Thank you.

    • @ricardomoll8993

is indeed one of my favorite songs from Chico: how it was literally constructed as a poem, with several aliterations in a way the song goes progressive both melodically and in the history and message it brings.

    • @EvandroGSilva
      @EvandroGSilva 4 роки тому +3

Yes, Ricardo, the word “construção = construction” refers to the subject of the song and the way he wrote the lyrics, in Alexandrine verses with each sentence ended with proparoxytones. It’s an amazing art piece. There’s an english Wikipedia article explaining the song, an easy way to understand the genious. “Rosa de Hiroshima” and “Sangue Latino”, beyond the perfect performance of the band - especially the singer Ney - carries tons of meanings (social, political and cultural).

This song is about parents and their kids talking to each other, specially about a girl that committed suicide in the beginning of the song, but also other typical parent-and-kids phrases.
The chorus says "We must love people as if there was no tomorrow, because if you think about it, actually there isn't (a tomorrow)", reflecting again the girl's suicide.
Renato Russo said it was a great toll singing this song, as he considered it to be a very sad one, and that fans didn't think about it's meaning and thought it was cheerful.

I was teenager when Renato Russo died and it was a great commotion among Brazilian youth at that time. In fact, I believe that Legião Urbana was the voice of our generation. The lyrics of their music are very deep and influenced a generation. The song "Faroeste Cabloco" has 9 minutes, has no chorus and tells a deep story. And when we are in a party and this song is played most of people sing together, what is very impressive because is a very long music witth no chorus, how I said. "Que país é esse", other song, expresses the feeling of many generations in Brazil.

If you're gonna do another reaction of Legião, I don't suggest Faroeste Caboclo. It's a great song, don't get me wrong, but it's 10 minutes of lyrics that never repeat and won't make much sense when you don't speak the language. It's pretty much an epic poem telling the tragic story of a guy who was born in poverty and turned into a drug dealer due to the circumstances of life. It's beautiful, but it's way too long if you don't understand what he's singing.

This song was about phrases that Parents and Children's talk to each other in different moments.

Posso ficar aqui com vocês? - "Can I stay here you you?"

Meu filho vai ter nome de santo, quero o nome mais bonito - "My son will have a name of a saint, I want the most beautiful name."
Dorme agora, é só o vento lá fora - "Sleep now, it is just the wind outside..."
and Mr. Russo mix up some riff's with guitar and words in order to make a context around the song... He wrote the song while in the bathroom. at number 2. Accordingly with himself.

Hi!! We are a cover band of Legião Urbana (we are from Belo Horizonte/MG). So, Legião Urbana is the most famous brazilian band of all time. Renato Russo, the singer, died in 1996, October 11. Legião Urbana recorded six official songs in english language, they are called: "Feedback Song for a Dying Friend" and "Mariane" from studio albums. Check both. In the record of this video (Acoustic MTV), they sing four covers songs in english: "Head On" (from The Jesus and Marie Chain), "On The Way Home" (from Neil Young with Buffalo Springfield), "Rise" (from PIL - Public Image Ltd.) and "The last Time I Saw Richard" (from Joni Mitchell). Check them too. Also, in live shows, Renato always improvised some songs in english, songs from Beatles, Rolling Stones, and other big bands. Renato also recorded an album with 21 songs, all songs in english, all covers. It's a brilliant album. To finish, Renato recorded an album in italian language named "Equilibrio Distante". Check it too. You will fall in love with this band overall, and you will realize why it is the biggest band from Brazil. It's like Beatles from UK, or Aerosmith, Gun's from USA or Vasco Rossi from Italy. See ya! Edit: Renato has a perfect english because he was an english teacher before start the music life, and a perfect italian too!

Me and a "legion" of fans are passionate about the songs of the band led by the unique and longing Renato Russo (who even recorded a solo album all in Italian). It is always a nourishing memory to hear the Legion's songs again.

Great videos Frank, thanks! I was a teenager in the 80´s. Legião wrote the hymns of our generation. I think it´s important to say that in addition to the melody itself, the lyrics are very expressive.
They really helped us to deepen and understand our youth life. Greetings!

Pais e filhos (Parents and Sons) was composed just when the three musicians who were members of Legião Urbana had children. The title was inspired by the name of a Brazilian magazine about fatherhood and motherhood that they always read between recordings. Although the song is very popular among the audience, Renato Russo didn't like to sing it because he says it's a very dense song, which talks about issues like suicide. The lyrics are a collage of phrases said by fathers, mothers and children, in different contexts, added to the voice of a lyrical self.
    PARENTS AND SONS
Statues and safes and painted walls
    no one knows what happened
she jumped out of the fifth floor window
    Nothing is easy to understand
    "Sleep now
it is just the wind outside"
    "I need a cuddle"
"I'm going to run away from home"
"May i sleep here with you?"
    "I'm afraid. I had a nightmare"
"I won't be back home until after three"
"My child will have the name of a saint
I want the most beautiful name"
You have to love people like there's no tomorrow
because if you think about it, tomorrow doesn't exist
"Tell me why the sky is blue"
"Explain to me the great fury of the world"
"My children take care of me"
"I live with my mother, but my father comes to visit me"
"I live on the street, I have no one"
    "I live anywhere"
"I've lived in so much houses that I don't even remember"
    "I live with my parents"
You have to love people like there's no tomorrow
because if you think about it, tomorrow doesn't exist
    I'm a drop of water
    I'm a grain of sand
You say your parents don't understand you
but you don't understand your parents
you blame your parents for everything
    This is absurd!
    They are children like you
What will you be when you grow old?

I don't know if the translator does the right thing but today we can get in touch with people from other countries. I really enjoyed seeing you discovering our best musicians. Of course, Brazilian music is partly for me in decadence. of our great musicians died or no longer heard. Because the music trash won the media. But we have the hope of a resurgence of music in the future. A strong hug.I hope that this translator does the right translation of my words.

    Frank,
I don't know If anyone has mentioned before, Renato started in the 70s in a rock band in Brasília called Aborto Elétrico (roughly translated as Electric Abortion), together with other musicians that ended up on another bands like: Paralamas do Sucesso and Capital Inicial.
It's said Renato brought a little of Aborto Elétrico into Legião Urbana, maybe it was just his style.
Later, after Renato's death, he left the rights of the songs of Legião Urbana to his son and family. The band and Renato's family fought for the rights on court until a couple of years ago when the band finaly got the rights over their songs. I think they share the rights and royalties now.

Renato Russo has a very intersting life story and that made him a great poet. His voice is great, but it would be even more amazing for you if you had the lyrics to the song, because that's his real legacy. He wrote about politics, love, pain, youth, tragedy and in this case: the relationship between parents and children. He had a very hard relationship with himself and his parents for being gay for a long long time, and unfortunatelly he died victim of AIDS. Until today his songs and words are very powerfull to people any age. thank you for reacting!!!

This song tells many tales, actually.
    a suicide in the very first paragraph, a daughter issues having trouble with the parents;
Then it's about a child who wants to be with her parents and then grows up, wanting his/her own child.
The chorus tells that We need to love each other as if we wouldn't make it to tomorrow.
The Singer Renato Russo became known as a poet and his lyrics were meaningful.
It's hard to pick one as his best and there's one song that inspired an long film. Its plot is based on the song (and the movie's title) Faoreste Caboclo (9min music).

About the urban legion, his vocalist recorded 2 solo albums, one in English and another in Italian (his family is Italian) He chose to record in other languages so as not to be confused with the urban legion if he sang in Portuguese. After his death a great Brazilian singer also son of Italians and with a voice very similar to Renato made an album (Forza Sempre) with re-recordings of the songs of the urban legion in Italian respecting the original arrangements.
