This series has me so amped up! It was an instant click when it hit my alerts. You need little splash fins attached to the side of the hulls to minimize, well, splash. They are commonly found on pontoon boats. Also, can you attach a pinwheel to the front of your kayak? No reason other than for fun.
regarding the wake comment at the end. What you've made is effectively a really bad wakeless launch. The idea is that the wakes from each hull cancel out so that the boat can keep up with rowing shells without waking them out. Try messing with how far apart the hulls are to try to get more of the destructive interference.
Hello, nerd here Those flexible shafts are meant more for speedboats, the rear solid bit is meant to go in a strut/stinger with 2 different inner diameters, then it won't fall out. The square part should fit loosely in the solid shaft as the flex shaft contracts under torsion. The Teflon can be cut longer than the brass shaft, then folded over and locked in place with a zip-tie. They should spin the right way as they may leak and also as they can break if spun the wrong way, normally they don't leak when the boat is on plane A solid shaft with ballbearings and universal joint would be the way to go Other than that, awesome build!!! I don't understand any of this autonomous telemetry stuff but these vids makes me want to learn it, seen all your builds Best regards
Holy crap, this was a great video until the shanty, then it instantly became EPIC. Another awesome video, please keep them coming, love your work Daniel.
I reccomend using cotton flocks and microballons as additives for epoxy when you want to glue stuff in place. Adding talcum powder/baby powder to epoxy makes it easy to sand by the way. That would have been helpful for the last vid. My go to for filling/sanding is epoxy + baby powder + microballoons + thixotropic agent
Also, wood flour is what he was trying to think of when he used saw dust. You just need to put the sawdust into a fine sieve to get the wood flour and it does a good enough job for most jobs like this.
Very nice video. One piece of advise: Do NOT tin (solder) the tips of the wires that goes into the screw terminal. Over time the solder will float (think glacier) under the force of the screw and the connection will loosen up.
You could add a "solar barge" behind the tugboat, to have them higher up. (Maybe some yellow floating device could be repurposed for that, as it would mostly be hidden under the panels.) You could even have a fixed linkage between the tugboat and the solar barge, from which you could extract mechanical energy.

In my limited experience hot glue tends to just lose all of its strength in water. I learned that the hard way… (RIP to my first and second sailboat lol)
It's somewhat why 99% isopropyl alcohol will instantly break the bond of hot glue on most surfaces. The water or alcohol gets between the surfaces. Water just takes longer. Or in the case of wood, gets absorbed and swells the fibres, breaking/weakening the bond. Keep it dry and hot glue will tear wood fibres apart before the bond let's go.
The quality of these videos is great, i've been a fan for years now Dan, but the narration is more relaxed and filled with humour. Love the music now too.... clever!
17:05 If you try to go faster than the max speed of a boat determined by its length you just make bigger waves no matter what throttle you give it. but that shouldn‘t be a problem tugging the kayak.
Yes efficiency goes down with orders of magnitude, more or less at the speeds he is doing with such small hulls. Hard to avoid though, unless he wants to make them longer.
@@steam6626 No, but according to his quoted meter per seconds number, he isnt that far from it either. But he also needs other props and hull shapes for better efficiency. Its fun to try to optimize.
Nice video, very ingenious project! I sea kayaked the coast of Alaska for years in an 18 foot fiberglass sea kayak for weeks at a time in the 80's and 90's. I seriously considered installing the power system from a large 1/4 scale boat in it to help with long open water crossings especially against a stiff head wind, I was planning to use a 50cc water cooled 2 cycle motor for large RC boats. I figured that should be plenty of power to push me along. This was before the electric option was very practical. Thanks for the video!
There's a shitty infomercial/gag product that extends the hood of a hoodie to the edges of your laptop screen. It could solve your problem of seeing the screen in the sun, but mostly it'd be hilarious once.
You can get much lighter solar panels that would decrease your freeboard weight and lower the center of mass greatly improving stability. Also gluing the electronics instead of drilling holes in your hull would prevent leakage.
Its really low power compared to yours, probably. Boats such as these can be run on a few watts of output power if he keeps a reasonable speed suitable for the hulls.
Why though? It really normally isnt that hard to make it leak-proof, he is making it a bit hard for himself, but that is to be expected as a beginner in this field. Better to get the lower center of gravity and slightly better effieciency of the placement he got if you ask me. I wonder if you could use the valve guide seals for cylinder heads on your guides for the propellers. The seals can be found in like .500.530 diameter for the guide and inner diameters of 5/16, 11/32, 8mm. Could be worth looking into for the inner tubes close to the motor

Good advice, i recommend using a crimp ferrule on any wire end terminations like this.
I've never heard of this being a problem and Ive never personally experienced it... it seems like it would be fine for low current applications.
This is fine for low heat applications. High heat or high current = melted tin and loose connections.
Yep that's why you use a ferrule tip and crimp tool.
I was just about to say this. Solder is so soft connections loosen up in days and provide unreliable contact. Ferrules definitely recommended
