This series has me so amped up! It was an instant click when it hit my alerts. You need little splash fins attached to the side of the hulls to minimize, well, splash. They are commonly found on pontoon boats. Also, can you attach a pinwheel to the front of your kayak? No reason other than for fun.

  • @henryefry
    @henryefry 3 роки тому +24

regarding the wake comment at the end. What you've made is effectively a really bad wakeless launch. The idea is that the wakes from each hull cancel out so that the boat can keep up with rowing shells without waking them out. Try messing with how far apart the hulls are to try to get more of the destructive interference.

    Hello, nerd here
Those flexible shafts are meant more for speedboats, the rear solid bit is meant to go in a strut/stinger with 2 different inner diameters, then it won't fall out. The square part should fit loosely in the solid shaft as the flex shaft contracts under torsion.
The Teflon can be cut longer than the brass shaft, then folded over and locked in place with a zip-tie.
They should spin the right way as they may leak and also as they can break if spun the wrong way, normally they don't leak when the boat is on plane
A solid shaft with ballbearings and universal joint would be the way to go
Other than that, awesome build!!! I don't understand any of this autonomous telemetry stuff but these vids makes me want to learn it, seen all your builds
    Best regards

I reccomend using cotton flocks and microballons as additives for epoxy when you want to glue stuff in place.
Adding talcum powder/baby powder to epoxy makes it easy to sand by the way. That would have been helpful for the last vid.
My go to for filling/sanding is epoxy + baby powder + microballoons + thixotropic agent

You could add a "solar barge" behind the tugboat, to have them higher up. (Maybe some yellow floating device could be repurposed for that, as it would mostly be hidden under the panels.) You could even have a fixed linkage between the tugboat and the solar barge, from which you could extract mechanical energy.

It's somewhat why 99% isopropyl alcohol will instantly break the bond of hot glue on most surfaces. The water or alcohol gets between the surfaces. Water just takes longer. Or in the case of wood, gets absorbed and swells the fibres, breaking/weakening the bond. Keep it dry and hot glue will tear wood fibres apart before the bond let's go.

I seriously considered installing the power system from a large 1/4 scale boat in it to help with long open water crossings especially against a stiff head wind, I was planning to use a 50cc water cooled 2 cycle motor for large RC boats. Nice video, what a good idea to use a soldering iron to melt the fitting in that 3d printed part. I'll have to remember that for future projects.

I think you need a kayak with a hard shell. Will have significantly less drag, allowing you to go faster and straighter

I recently found this channel and the waypoint mission with the banana slug where you get your truck stuck is one of my favorite videos. When I heard the lyrics that the banana slug was one of the most hated ships that ever was, I was indignant. Lol. I want a shirt with a picture of the banana slug and text that says "The most hated ship that ever was" with hated crossed out and loved written over it!

That is really cool. The only thing I would suggest adding is a car fob type kill switch you can attach to yourself. If you spill the Kayak and your laptop and controller you won't be able to stop it.

Man, I am sitting here trying to pick up my lower jaw from the floor. What an incredible project and unparalleled attention to detail in all different parts of the development process and different domains. What’s your background, mech engineering? Did you acquire all those skills from your first boat ever to this one step by step? Would love to hear more about what got you where you are today. Kudos!

Amazing to watch! Very excited for part 3. For future autonomous boat content (which I absolutely love), I have 3 suggestions: a sailboat, a hydro foiling motor boat, or a submarine. I also wouldn't say no to just another really long-range mission like the last one you did with the Banana Slug. Great content!

I wonder if you could use the valve guide seals for cylinder heads on your guides for the propellers. The seals can be found in like .500.530 diameter for the guide and inner diameters of 5/16, 11/32, 8mm. Could be worth looking into for the inner tubes close to the motor

Make compartment in your boat so that the if water does enter somehow it will be restricted to that compartment and your boat wont sink. Make compartment from bottom of hull to the top deck. This is a mandatory thing done in every ship this was also one of the reason why titanic sank.... Hope this will help u get better results.... I am a Naval Architect myself and love your videos 👍

You know the banana slug isn't "Hated", right? It was a fantastic first effort and worked surprisingly well. Absolutely a success, and you should be proud of how well it did. It just needed some improvements, which you have made with your new design. The new more traditional "displacement" style "Deep Vee" hulls clearly work much better. Faster, more stable, and better hydrodynamics. Nice work!
