Hi Eric thanks for all the great videos. Quick question regarding rotatining the right shoulder at the top of the backswing... you explained the diff between internal and external rotation but would like to know which as a stock is better. Many thanks Etienne.

Really comprehensive video. One issue not covered is the need to connect the right arm or not. There are videos placing head covers under the right arm or using towels while some instructors promote floating the right arm away from the chest right from the takeaway. Could you come on the lateral movement of the right arm away from the chest- when and how it should happen?
The way I see it you basically have 2 main options (doesn't matter much how or when to me during backswing) 1. You can keep right arm more connected the whole time during backswing and downswing. This would produce a top of backswing more external rotation of trail shoulder and more lead arm pronation. "laid off" looking. Then it can remain or slightly increase in transition. OR 2. You can disconnect more during backswing like "flying right elbow" a la Jack and Freddy and will produce usually more down the line or across the line look at top...generally speaking. Then you re connect during transition downswing. I've seen both work really well, I dont think there is a black and white answer to when you should disconnect or re connect. Probably easiest for most normal golfers to find a nice middle ground. Not overly connected (for speed purposes) but also not wild at the top.
Super helpful explanation! Thank you- would love someday to se you provide a video on this topic- too little or too much connection. Thanks again!!@@CogornoGolf
One other gem that was briefly mentioned. I think at address my wrists are already overly hinged and too low. Have you done any videos how to get the proper wrist position at setup? I think I have to raise my hands up and take out the hinge- is this correct?
Your Right wrist back video (and mention here) is pure gold. One thing I struggle with however is focusing on wrist back tends to cause my right elbow not to bend but rather lock in place. It seems like the only way to have both would be via forearm rotation, right? I’ve been hesitant to add that because I was worried it would open the face. What do you think? Thanks much!
Hey David! Thanks! Its easier to do when your right shoulder is more externally rotated when you go back....if you internally rotate (flying elbow) you would need more forearm rotation, yes. Hope that helps
@ Eric Cogorno Golf I have a question Eric. So during my younger years I played a lot of sport and both my shoulders have been dislocated upwards of 25 times each. In your expert opinion what subconscious limitations do you think it causes during my swing? Yeah I know...upwards of 25 times each..!!🙄🙄
Most of the time, especially of the tee I hit my irons off the toe. I rarely hit my woods off the toe. I always blame it on my back swing. Am I wrong about this problem being my back swing? We're talking 1/2 an inch off but it's everything.
Not sure, David! I would really have to see a video of your swing to say for sure why its happening...could be several things. If you don't get it sorted, check out Cogornogolf.com so we can see your swing and help fix!
I find that I pull my right elbow straight back behind me, which pins my left arm against my body. Since this movement of pulling the right elbow back is not one of your five, should I assume that in no circumstances should you pull the right elbow back behind you in the swing.

Hey Eric I have enjoyed your videos, you've helped me a lot! Your teaching style is what I can relate to. Backswing depth is something I've thought about for a long time But when you demonstrate back swing positions while standing straight up, out of your golf posture, your arms and club shaft are much flatter in space than when you are in your more bent over posture, they appear more vertical. Hi Eric, got a tough one for you today. Most amateurs struggle with shallowing the club during the transition. Why isn't it the norm to swing in a way you can have the shaft on one plane during the whole swing, thereby getting rid of the shallowing part? What's your view on this? Thank you, always reviewing your content :)
Because when people try to swing on one plan (and have an open clubface or similar issue) they will swing steep because its the only way to hit the ball at a target.
Excellent excellent videos Eric, I'm up north of Binghamton ny and thinking about making a trip for a lesson, I have a question I understand the more you hinge your wrist up creates cup at the top, how does cupping of the wrists affect your pivot?
Hey Jeremy! Would love to have you! If the "cup" makes the face "open"......than yes. The more OPEN the club face is the more you have to either stall rotation or stand up (early extension) to help square the face The most closed the face the easier to have a good pivot. Amazing that you're talking about that right wrist hinge! Was hitting some drives yesterday and kept pushing the ball and had some weak slices. On my drive back home I started thinking it might be because my right wrist wasn't hinging enough backwards allowing me to stay on plane and approach from the inside of the ball. The videos I took proved that too. Another thing to work on🙂
I wish I'd known about the right hand rotation years ago. I've compensated for my fast move inside and up to off plane shaft so much that I somehow hit a draw. This saves me so much frustration with the takeaway!
This video changed my game completely. I had a spell of months of bad golf. Knowing my club face was open and struggling to correct this. Having my right wrist bent back as much as possible as described in video has me driving straight over 300 yards, irons now with baby draw and hitting 8 iron 160 yards with lovely flight. I was so close to quitting golf. We all say it, but I seriously was selling my clubs. I'm now playing to single figures gross score on most rounds and just love the sport again. Best video I've ever watched.
Jame Donovan This is just superb, I've been looking for "how to golf better" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my buddy got amazing success with it.
Just commenting to say you are bang on the money with your videos hard to say how you could possibly improve your videos. Thanks again. If you were in the UK I would be knocking on your door.
Another good video to learn from. You really brake down each part of the arm and explain the impacts they can create. This will be good, instead of lifting my arms and hoping, I can try and feel each moment and try to control my arms movements. Only the shot will tell when I play with it. Should be a challenge. I get the feeling this is going to connect my whole arm better to my shoulders. I can see myself rotating my arm as much as I can trying to do a massive draw. Lol. Good video, good explanation. I understood.
Good grief Eric. By FAR the best instruction on UA-cam. bar none. Clear, concise, logical, right visuals, ... why have i not seen you earlier.. unreal.
Fantastic ! There is so much great information in this video that I don’t think a beginner can fully appreciate that these positions are part of the foundation of a sound golf swing. It has literally taken me 35 years to figure out these positions without the aid of videos that we have at our fingertips now. There is absolutely no reason why someone with average physical ability, and understanding, would not be able to play decent golf and shorten the learning curve with teaching like this available. As usual, great video Eric.
Eric you talk in the backswing about right arm rotation but you rotate only the wrist and the hand and not the arm! The arm rotation I feel should be also the elbow and right under arm. Please let me know what your thoughts !
During the backswing you can rotate the upper arm (humerus)....that happens mostly through internal or external rotation. You can rotate the lower arm (forearm) through supination and pronation. You can have a bunch of combinations of these during the backswing... hope that helps, lmk what you want to know
I absolutely love your videos but can you please start saying "Your back arm or front arm "? It's just really annoying for us lefties to constantly have to think of the opposite of what you are saying. Thanks.
No one pointes this out to me. Without knowing this, no matter how nice my stance is, my swing is still very inconsistent. Thanks a lot for sharing your technique. Thanks a bunch!
in my swing I have less forearm rotation/ external rotation of the shoulder and I do notice with the longer clubs mostly driver and 3 wood I'm across the line. when I try to actually rotate my forearm a little bit it just feels so unnatural and I feel like I'm really opening the club face. my question is across the line really that bad? I'm happy with my ball striking overall. its just sometimes I'm guilty of trying to fix things just to be more aesthetic on video. however I do notice that Bryson dechambeau is across the line with driver and hes a top pro. thanks for all you do Eric!
One of your best videos. I am constantly watching Andy and Piers. Chris Ryan. Clay. Rick Shiels so believe me when I say this is one of the best videos (:
I filmed my swing today and discovered that I do this slight up and down movement with my head from backswing to downswing.. I need to be perfectly still I imagine.
Fantastic video! I've always had a problem understanding when, and how much something should be done, especially with hinge and extension. You've explained it perfectly, and the consequences of doing too much of the many components of the back swing. Thanks and keep up the great work!
I wouldn't say I advocate it. It's a move thats done naturally in any throwing motion and most all swinging motions in sports. Definitely can help shallow the downswing and add speed. Not a must do.....but its one way. A good way.
When I was a hacking 14hcp I knew that when I could master right arm only swings /strikes I would have become a good player because at the time I could do good left arm only swings but Im right handed! The key for me having dug it out the dirt is that I rotate in the shoulder/upper arm/elbow but not in the forearm and my hand does the gamechanger hinge that Chris advocates,Hope this makes sense as Im now down to 5hcp and yes I can do good right arm only swings/strikes.
@@CogornoGolf Whilst we are on the subject of arms most pros including yourself lash the **** out of it and their bad shot is a hook. Most golfers starting as an adult male are taught everything But how to lash it! I have ended up with the swing of an LPGA player! Thanks to your left elbow video triggering something in my dense brain I am now beginning to use them like I have done in every other sport Ive been good at. Although I have never hit a baseball I imagine the athletic twirl of the bat they do with their arms as they prepare to lash the **** out of it. If you havnt done one could you think about doing another great video on the arms.
awesome presentation little confused on the wrist motions i thought that the right wrist worked on the horizontal plane--- and the left wrist worked on the vertical plane---help me understand the concepts
Both wrists work both on vertical plane Both wrist also work on horizontal plane We were born with 2 wrists....they function the same. Holding onto the club with both hards forces one hand to react along with the other
Some "people", won't name them because this is your channel, claims a good idea to run the swing is with your right arm. What's your view on this Eric? Thanks.
Btw, I'm looking for an instructor next season and I see no reason why this couldn't be you. What kind of equiptment would I need for a good lesson to be possible?
Great job, Eric. Incredibly thorough and enlightening video. I'm heading for my 4 iron and my mirror right now to see what my right arm is up to. Thank you!
Eric I played today at my course and was 2 over par at the turn, two bogies on 8 and 9 due to overstovershooting each green, 2nd 9 was not so good as I started to get greedy in over bowing the wrists, but I have learned from that and will take that on the chin, but let me thank you again for saving my game Eric as I just could not find what I was doing wrong in my back swing till you showed the reasons on you tube, My mates were well impressed with my game, I was amazed at being level par after 7 holes played, just a pity the season has finished, but I won't forget what I have learned from you and I am now doing THE BACK SWING right!

Love to hear you are back on track, Lee!! Lets keep it rolling!
I have been sneaking up on getting max right wrist bend for 20 years... Eric, you are the best instructor on YT ( and I watch them all...)
Thanks Jame, appreciate it!

By the way your a good teacher its me and I dont know what I am doing wrong
Just commenting to say you are bang on the money with your videos hard to say how you could possibly improve your videos. Thanks again. If you were in the UK I would be knocking on your door.
Tom Bain thanks, Tom! Appreciate it!!
Thanks, Matt!
i have searched lots of related inform on web for long time, your vedio is the best one and explained all the back-swing questions for me. Thanks!
Thanks, Bruce! Appreciate it!
Liked the video. Thanks. Is it the same with a driver or fair way wood? Seems different with an iron than the driver or wood. Your thoughts?
Yup! Same.
Good grief Eric. By FAR the best instruction on UA-cam. bar none. Clear, concise, logical, right visuals, ... why have i not seen you earlier.. unreal.
:) Thanks, Mike!
Fantastic ! There is so much great information in this video that I
don’t think a beginner can fully appreciate that these positions are part of
the foundation of a sound golf swing. It has literally taken me 35 years
to figure out these positions without the aid of videos that we have at our fingertips now.
There is absolutely no reason why someone with average physical ability,
and understanding, would not be able to play decent golf and shorten the learning curve with teaching
like this available. As usual, great video Eric.
This the best video I have seen to cover my problem.Across the line for many years.the right hand position was my problem .thank you so much
Eric you talk in the backswing about right arm rotation but you rotate only the wrist and the hand and not the arm! The arm rotation I feel should be also the elbow and right under arm. Please let me know what your thoughts !
During the backswing you can rotate the upper arm (humerus)....that happens mostly through internal or external rotation.
You can rotate the lower arm (forearm) through supination and pronation.
You can have a bunch of combinations of these during the backswing...
hope that helps, lmk what you want to know
That no hinge look. See Bryson DeChambeau he's pretty good?
Yessir...I would much prefer NO hinge to too much hinge
Just hold a tray at the top of swing like your favorite waitress or waiter walks around with.
Yep thats a good feel....so long as its tilted on an angle!
I absolutely love your videos but can you please start saying "Your back arm or front arm "? It's just really annoying for us lefties to constantly have to think of the opposite of what you are saying. Thanks.
Hey Sean,
Thanks for the feedback!
No one pointes this out to me. Without knowing this, no matter how nice my stance is, my swing is still very inconsistent. Thanks a lot for sharing your technique. Thanks a bunch!
My pleasure!
Thank you. I've read this in Hogans book but never practiced it. Can't wait to get to the range.
:)
Good.
Thanks, Tom!
great video ...best teacher who explains the sequencing of swing...wondered though how high do you try to get the right elbow on the backswing?
That's really dependent on the player...no black and white answer here. So long as it doesnt get too far behind you youre okay
in my swing I have less forearm rotation/ external rotation of the shoulder and I do notice with the longer clubs mostly driver and 3 wood I'm across the line. when I try to actually rotate my forearm a little bit it just feels so unnatural and I feel like I'm really opening the club face. my question is across the line really that bad? I'm happy with my ball striking overall. its just sometimes I'm guilty of trying to fix things just to be more aesthetic on video. however I do notice that Bryson dechambeau is across the line with driver and hes a top pro. thanks for all you do Eric!
LOOOOOTTTSSSS of really good players are across the line. Don't change for the sake of changing, only change if it causes issues in downswing.
One of your best videos. I am constantly watching Andy and Piers. Chris Ryan. Clay. Rick Shiels so believe me when I say this is one of the best videos (:
Thanks, Roberto. Appreciate it man!
I filmed my swing today and discovered that I do this slight up and down movement with my head from backswing to downswing.. I need to be perfectly still I imagine.
OK to have some down motion both back and through....lots of good players do that!
Fantastic video! I've always had a problem understanding when, and how much something should be done, especially with hinge and extension. You've explained it perfectly, and the consequences of doing too much of the many components of the back swing. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thanks, Jeff!
One the most helpful videos on angles and rotation
:)
Do you advocate (for most people), going from internal rotation of the right humerus, to external rotation during transition?
Tip try doing the Hogan waggle but using your upper arms and elbows to power it not your hands forearms
Love it!
If you havnt done one could you think about doing another great video on the arms.
awesome presentation
little confused on the wrist motions
i thought that the right wrist worked on the horizontal plane---
and the left wrist worked on the vertical plane---help me understand the concepts
Both wrists work both on vertical plane
Both wrist also work on horizontal plane
We were born with 2 wrists....they function the same. Holding onto the club with both hards forces one hand to react along with the other
Are you doctor by chance? You have good understanding of medical terms!
Haha, no sir. Just have studied some things over the years :)
Doesn't matter, my friend. Whatever you got is good
very very good video .. i have been struggling to understand how I position my right arm ... thank you Eric
My pleasure...happy to help
Great job, Eric. Incredibly thorough and enlightening video. I'm heading for my 4 iron and my mirror right now to see what my right arm is up to. Thank you!
:)
Informative lesson. Hope your guidance leads me to a perfect posture at the top of the swing. Thanks!
Thanks!
5 PERMUTATIONS and I see that I have done them all! Now after watching your video I can now see where I have been going wrong! Many thanks!!
MY pleasure Alan...good luck!
You da man!!!
great video Eric. I struggle with my right "bend".
Thanks! Hope you get it sorted!
way too technical, better said "do this, don't do this"
Thanks for the feedback, George!
Is it true that lesser the right elbow bend at the top you will get more width?
Yes.....assuming you don't bend it in transition
Clear, articulate, common sense. Many thanks.
Thanks, Peter!
Thanks! This is so good! I really got a understanding of my backswing and my faults by looking on this video! Great explaining!
Happy to help!
Outstanding video! Just what I have been looking for!
Thanks! Happy to help!
