      Jeff, can you make a PR series? Like: most reps at bodyweight exercises (just like pull ups) or max 1-3 rep max weighted exercises (bench press/squad). And show us how to prepare for a contest in the days befor we must go all out. Btw I would like to see your form when it gets hard. And have a challenge/goal to work to.
      So not just teaching us, but prove to us what you can do whit your PR's

    I just find these funny now. Want to be good at pullups? Do them. Every other day or every 3rf day. Get on the bar and do as many as you can for probably 8 or more sets. Rest 3 minutes between. Within a year (as long as your not over weight by a lot. And can manage 6 to 10 to begin with) you'll be doing sets of 20 or 30 easily. Wanna be good at something? Do them and. It just tor a set or 2. Calesthenics require high volume multiple times a week.

      My advice would be to go with weighted pull ups, like :
      - Add 5 Kgs every time you can get 8 reps with good form
      - Remove the weight at the end of each set and do bodyweight pull ups to failure then rest 3 to 5 min
      - Do this 3x
      - Next thing you know on a day off you'll be able to do your 20s
      I've seen pretty crazy progress doing this for the past weeks (I'm actually at the Bodyweight Pull Up + Assisted Pull Up level, but it's the same process of dropping the weight to failure)

      You mean grip strength is important for pullups ?
      If i increased my grip strength thro grip training and heavy grippers will that help with pullups ?

    • @harrisgilmour7236
      @harrisgilmour7236 7 років тому +1

      Humam Slayer yo,
      Grip strength has helped me a lot with pull ups and would 100% say its very important to improve. I can hold a 1 arm hang for a good time and thats all due to grip strength(though i can't pull up at all in the 1 arm hang 😂) i can do at least 15 proper pull ups and my max ive done was 22 but im pretty sure i did half reps so i don't count it. Before i learned about grip strength i was maxing out anywhere from 8-12 so grip really is important 💪

    • @j.l.5966
      @j.l.5966 7 років тому +8

      Humam Slayer yes it's true, a stronger grip will help you with pull-ups. At the 5:00 mark, Jeff talks about energy leaks from lack of tightness. A loosened grip is also an energy leak. When training grip strength specifically for pull-ups, you're better off doing it hanging from the bar. It's not just a strong grip you want, but a strong grip you can hold longer. The more pull-ups you're doing, your grip will tend to loosen with each rep.
      So try this. Hang from the bar in the extended position but keep your body tight. Grip as hard as you can and hold on for as long as you can. Also try from the top position, chin over bar. Body tight and grip as hard as you can. Hold til you can't any longer. The goal is to increase the amount of time you can hold each session.

Pull-ups are a great exercise for many major muscle groups. My max is 27 (dead hang) and I'm aiming for 30+. I think that plugging the "energy leaks" will help a lot. I'll report back in a few weeks if I'm able to implement these tips and get any results.

    Seen a lot of videos from this guy lately. He obviously knows what he's doing. I remember going off to Marine Corps bootcamp at 18, and being incredibly weak. Goodness. When I left to go there I probably wasn't able to do a single pull-up. By the time I graduated bootcamp (almost 3 months later) I was easily knocking out 20 of them in a 1 set. I can't even imagine how many this guy can do. He can probably do over 20 with 1 hand (while telling jokes). That dude is a beast, and I just looked it up and can't believe he's actually about 7 months older than me. I retired from the Corps about 6.5 years ago. I'm not in shape now and actually was never really in as good of shape as I should've been in, but as my schedule is about to open up I'm planning to get into better shape. I won't be ever taking it to this guy's level (or anywhere near that), as it's just not that high on my list of priorities. But his UA-cam channel is pretty damn impressive. He must've been at this for quite a while. I wouldn't be surprised if he also never took any time off or had any serious medical setbacks, and ate right the entire time. Dedication...

Pull ups, Push ups, Running.. natural movements that increase your hability for living a natural life. Of course I'm not taking away the value of sports like bodybuilding or powerlifting, but caring extremely heavyweights and extremely heavyloaded suplements - or other stuff - costs some price. Saaeedur Rahman, try the Armstrong pull-up program. It got me from something like 18 to 33 pull-ups. It's a 5 day a week program. It goes like this:
      day 1: 5 x maximum amount of pull-ups, with only 1:30 minute of rest in between.
      day 2: pyramid, 1 pull-up, 10 seconds rest, 2 pull-ups 20 seconds rest, 3 pull-ups 30 seconds rest, all the way untill you can't finish the set anymore.
      day 3: 9 sets with different grip: 3 sets of normal pull-ups, 3 sets of chin-ups, 3 sets of extra wide grip pull ups. 1 minute of rest between sets, and pick a number of reps that you can finish all 9 sets with. If you finish the 9 sets, add one rep the next week.
      day 4: work-sets. As many sets as you can at a fixed number of repetitions, I'd go for something like 6-8 to begin with. If you can complete 9 sets, increase the number of reps the next week. Only 1 minute of rest between sets.
      day 5: repeat the hardest work-out of the week, whichever one that was for you.
      Do this for 2 months and I promise that you'll see results very quickly! The nice thing is that the trainings are relatively short, 15-20 minutes max, but it's still very effective.

      Luvitus well I’ve been training my body for boxing since 13 I started to do push ups I couldn’t do 8 then a week past and I could do 20 i think I have good genetics I only ate 3.5 grams of rice and fish mainly trout and samon but when I started to do pull ups I did 5 x3 times with 2 minutes rest but I did this 4-5 times a day then when I started to do 10+ I added 20 pounds and this was when I was 14 and I can’t get past that 20+ pull ups all I have to say is if you get your mind to it then put your grind to it and you will succeed and plus my father kept pushing me

    • @yaboi7047
      @yaboi7047 5 років тому

      Luvitus just start by push ups see how many you can do I can do 35-45 in one rep and once you figure out the max you can do just do those 4x times in a sitting and 2x in a day then once you start doing 20+ push ups start pull ups but do curl ups and see how many you can do and do the same process with the push ups then move over to pull ups and do the same process

    • @yaboi7047
      @yaboi7047 5 років тому

      Luvitus so basically here is what you do daily 7 days a week if you want what I have accomplished
      Push ups 50-doesn’t have to be in a rep
      Curls 30-same thing don’t have to do it in a rep
      Pull ups 30-same thing
      And eat high protein and vitamins I hope this helped and check back in 2-3 weeks I want to see if this worked for you :) and if you want you can repeat this process 2-3 times for that extra grainzzz

    While watching tv at night I’d do sets of pull-ups with push ups. Using a door pull-up bar. 10 sets - set consisted of 5 to 8 pull-ups with 10-15 push-ups per set

    • @kenfrank3782
      @kenfrank3782 3 роки тому

      Realize after 6 months that I was getting bigger and stronger plus I had cut my chiropractor visits to 0. Because I wasn’t straining doing a lot of overhead presses.
      Came to the conclusion that pull-ups might be the ultimate exercise since it hits every muscle group from your hips up !!!! Only problem was sometimes getting tendon soreness in the elbow - so I’d just ease off it and concentrate on legs, abs and some back exercises
      To justify my workout I compared it to chimpanzees!!!! 😄. A mature male chimp is strong enough to rip an arm out of the shoulder socket on a pro football lineman!!! And humans share 98% of their DNA- do why are they so strong??
      Thinking of their lifestyle- everything is a pushing - pulling movement for them. Seldom is anything lifted over head. They pull themselves up into trees, they pull small trees/ branches towards them to eat the leaves. They spend some time walking using their knuckles
      Made sense to me that pull-ups were so good as an exercise since it’s been a natural movement for our body types since before we were human.

  • @ThatFaceMelter94

    I find it very helpful to wrap a resistance band around a pull-up bar and use it as an aid. This allows more focus on back contraction for beginners and establish that muscle connection and preserves the motion of a pull-up. It might take the core out of the equation at this stage but solves the most common challenge. It also remains optional to ditch the resistance band on the last rep and hold for as long as you can.

      KINGatLIFE - He does a lot throughout the video though, with great strict form, and with ease to boot (no visible strain or slowing down). Although people know that he can do pullups easily, I agree that he should have done 20 in a set just to avoid any misunderstandings or complaints about the title of this video.

      True, but if he had to prove to anybody he's legit, he'd also wear shorts to prove he doesn't skip leg day. He carries the extra weight easily.

    I’ve been stuck at 3-4 pull ups for a month or so. I’ll try your progression and see how it helps! Part of my problem is that the doorway pull up bar I have doesn’t allow the body position you described. I need something better! Thanks Jeff!
