Brighton 1964 was good but it was the 1st year of proper Mods on Lambrettas and Vespas. Previous bank holidays we would go on all sorts of scooters like Zundapps and Maicolettas and basically anything that looked like a scooter :). 1965 was when it really kicked off and was really busy; police put up road blocks to stop us getting to Brighton. When we eventually managed to arrive the police corralled everyone on the beach to the left of the pier for 6 hours. No toilets, no drink. They couldn't do that these days. In 1966 we decided to try somewhere else and headed for Hastings. I still have a copy of the the Sunday Pictorial with the Headline - 'Battle of Hastings 1066 - 1966'. it was hectic and police reinforcements were drafted in from all over even though we were not doing anything wrong , just going there for the Bank Holiday. For Brighton 2024 to be more realistic you need loads of police worried the Mods were going to cause havoc when actually we were then as nice as the Mods are today. The Guildford & Godalming Boys are now all in our late 70's early 80's but we still get together but mostly at funerals......Ziggy Zagger, Ziggy Zagger, Oi Oi Oi .

I got into the Mod scene in my teens back in 1964/5. Bands we listened to were Small Faces, The Spencer Davis Band, Kinks, and, of course, The Who. A lot of the early stuff was imported Motown and soul. Pickett and Redding were up there. I rode a Lambretta LD, smothered in lights & mirrors - which made it pretty expensive to drop, so you didn't drop it often. Always dressed the part (still do), always kept the culture. I became a drummer, so it wasn't practical to keep the scooter, and it broke my heart when it went. After 60 years I'm still keeping the faith. Sadly, last year I had a serious stroke and plans to get back into scooters flew out of the window - along with my driving license, as I've lost the use of most of the right side of my body. But all is not lost. I now get around on a mobility scooter - tricked out with extra mirrors, a few dummy lights, whippy aerial complete with flags and the obligatory fox-tail. It won't take me to Brighton, sadly, but it raises a smile as I ride around the neighbourhood - flat out at 8mph. Thanks for posting.

Quick question: I've seen a lot of scoots with picture quality black and white photo style images. Are they water slides with clearcoat or are they airbrushed? Thanks!!! Really Cool!! 😎
@@kboldin thanks for your question , but to be honest without seeing a particular scooter it’s hard to say … But either technique can achieve some fabulous results , 👍🍻
A great video. The Sunday was brilliant and it was great to meet you.
@@thelodger1289 it was a great event indeed , many thanks for your feedback, give me a clue to what we spoke of .. your profile just says the lodger ! 🤔 👍🍻

Question, I av a maxi scooter and love the mod scooter seen we both like to ware normal smart clothing on our scooter. We keep watching the scooter rallies with envy.I was wondering if there is any restriction on me and the Mrs going on the Brighton meet next year on our Burgman, reason I’m asking is that all the videos Iv watched I only see Lambretta and Vespa….
@@6101garryb there are no restrictions on anything .. people go to enjoy the event , wether you have a Lambretta , Vespa , Modena , royal alloy .. people go because its a amazing event , however you travel 👍🍻
Nigel Farage at 6:53🇬🇧😁

Was good when it first moved to Brighton to escape and distance from the IOW comedy mod scene but its followed and ruined it.
@@Marc-lx1qj it’s a fabulous scene with various elements within it , arguably the very reason what makes it stand out from other sub cultures 👍🍻
Brilliant coops ❤
@@ianmodernist.7038 thank you for your feedback I’m pleased you have enjoyed it 👍🍻
Where are the Mods ? Is there anyone under 40 at the weekender? lol (I'm not having a go)
@@rabhip if you consider the “mods” started in 64 , then had a “second generation “ in 79 you may work out most people within the scene will be over 40 .. that said there is a sprinkling of youngsters com into the scene , but I’d guess at least 85% of mods will be over the age of 40 .. in Todays youth you don’t really have any such subcultures unless you count “gangsters “ .. I hope that answers your question 👍
