    I would pay so much money for a version of Krosan Verge with the other land types. Even if it was allied colors it would help with so many decks.

      Do you think they will ever make it? Especially now that it isn't in the 4-color commander set. Don't get me wrong I love the new basic landcycling land but I too wish for more "verges"

      I only see them making it tethered to finding forests. Ramp in and color fixing in non-green seem a little too outside the color pie for me.

    Funilly enough, because of how CMC works, a card with a casting cost of X or XX (or so on and so forth) has a CMC of ZERO for the purposes of tolaria west.

    What about Thawing Glaciers? I'm not sure how commonly used it is but I think it's super under used. I'll fetch it with expedition map and yes....it takes a couple turns to start seeing the immediate benefit but once it does it has the perception of gaining a fresh land each and every turn. It thins out your deck like crazy and if you top deck a land, just don't use it that turn. I can't love this one enough and I just never see it in other people's decks.

      I figure there are two waves of excitement about building a commander -- when they are spoiled and when you crack a pack and see that legendary peeking back at you. I'm the type of person that gets hyped when I see the possibilities of new commanders. So far it's really satisfying to interact with this great community about something I love. Thanks for being a part of all this.

    A land card that is underrated in my opinion is Scrying Sheets. Many EDH players in my area run snow-covered lands and this card lets you peek and put one in your hand. Helps with card advantage a lot if you run land heavy decks.

  • @MrVariant
    @MrVariant 7 років тому

    Wow these lands add so much to the gameplay; I understand what Mark Rosewater meant about duel masters losing out by not having lands; since any card was playable during the turn it was cost (like 5 mana turn 5 always). My favorite is bojuka bog; use that with that orzhov basilica to recycle it and wipe out multiple players' graveyards for damn near free.

    So I have a Lord Windgrce deck based on you deck tech, but it goes in a different direction. I and get my own lands in the graveyard and to crazy stuff. I run Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator to get my lands back. This has even allowed me to run Dark Depths. This video gives me ideas on how to improve my Commander deck. I could use dust bowl to take out my own lands and get them back.

      I love the glaciers, I'm not sure how to figure if it's underrated or not tho. Seems like a no brainer in any deck not running green or 3+ colors. but then i'm a mana ramp junkie. i'll pop it to get the basics outa my way just to have a land drop.

      I'm working on a U\B deck with Gisa and Geralf. I also have had in mind to make a deck around Archangel Avacyn.

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  8 років тому

      I want to make an Archangel Avacyn deck too. I keep an EDH deck of each color combination and boros has always been SO boring. Right now it's equipment focused but I don't know if I like it. A subscriber suggested boros angel tribal which sounds interesting. I was thinking of a boros control deck (with Archangel Avacyn leading) but it looked very similar to the Avacyn, Angel of Hope deck I posted on my channel. Please say you have a great idea for boros?!?!?!

    • @Juggalozen
      @Juggalozen 8 років тому

      Boros has never really been my thing, but I've always loved angels. My idea was to build Boros angel tribal with Archangel Avacyn at the helm. I just really like the idea of having a response to sweepers in my command zone.

    Mirrorpool also saves your commander in bad situations if you have the available mana during opposing turns. Copy your commander when your commander is threatened, choose the targeted commander to go to the grave/command zone, token copy stays out safe.

    Dust Bowl is my go-to land destruction card. I prefer it to Strip Mine or Wasteland or Ghost Quarter because it's repeatable; it sucks when you sac your Wasteland to destroy something, only to have the next player drop a Gaea's Cradle after you pass.
    Another under-used land that I want to add to your list is The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. It's no mystery why it's under-used, and I'll gladly let my copy go for $3000, but until that day it's a regular in my Commander decks.

    First of all, thanks so much for the video. I'm getting a Tower of the Magistrate asap, had no idea it existed and it sounds amazing. Second, I have been playing Glacial Chasm for months and no one listens when I tell them it's just flat out busted... until I play it and they just look at the board... look at their hand... think about their library... and then scoop. It is so crazy good.
    And one last thing, if you haven't played with Thawing Glaciers you should. I haven't seen it much and it is sooooo good in the right deck

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  8 років тому +4

      Too many people underestimate glacial fortress. Casting crop rotation for it is the best. I also have to tell you that Tower of Magistrate is amazing. It is hilarious the first time you unequip their creature and they pick up your land in disbelief ... priceless.
      I also like Thawing Glaciers. I run it in most of my mono-colored decks (especially monoblack). At first it looks so clunky but over the course of a game you can see the value. If people read comments listen to Richard Thawing Glaciers is a land you should play with! Cheers.

      @tobynelson2729 6 років тому +1

      >glacial chasm
      I know this comment is a year old, but I'm curious why and how do you play it?
      I know commander is generally more impact-oriented than value/speed (paying 1 mana extra to do a little more or have more versatility is usually good for example) but having to sacrifice a land when it ETB, as far as I can tell it's only useful if you can pull the age counters off or skip your upkeep step.

    • @AngryHoalls
      @AngryHoalls 6 років тому

      Toby Nelson Crucible of world effects makes it really good, in the right decks it can practically function as a free fog every turn.

    • @tobynelson2729
      @tobynelson2729 6 років тому

      >in the right decks
      It costs you two land drops from your graveyard just to maintain... you'd need an additional land drop to keep ramping while pulling this off. That's like crucible + azusa at least?

    • @AngryHoalls
      @AngryHoalls 6 років тому

      >you'd need an additional land drop to keep ramping while pulling this off. That's like crucible + azusa at least?
      The "right decks" I previously mentioned are the typical "land matters" decks, like angry Omnath, Titania, the Gitgud Frog or even Windgrace. All of those decks wants as many of those exact effects as they can by default, so Glacial Chasm slots right in.
      Additionaly, in a "lands matters deck", it also guarantees multiple landfall and "when a land enters the graveyard" triggers every single turn, keeping your engine going as well.
      Maintaining the land is one thing, but don't underestimate its potential to stall until you have actually managed to assemble the "extra land drop per turn" + "you can play lands from your graveyard" effects or a game winning combo. Dumping down this land at the cost of sacrificing some life has won me a lot of games that I would've lost if I didn't play Glacial Chasm.
      Here's a link to my deck if you're curious:

    Do you consider High Market as undervalued? I find a sac outlet almost invaluable so many times from protecting your critters from removal that has some bigger effect for your opponent or enabling a good one for yourself. Obviously Diamond Valley is good contender but price/availability is prohibitive and it doesn't generate mana - call it a runner up.

    Speaking of basic lands, how many should a deck have? I have a good amount of nonbasics in my Sen Triplets deck, but I'm wondering if I could get away with a few more. The reason I tend to shy away from too many nonbasics is because of Blood Moon, that card scares me. To be fair, I've never seen it in my meta, but you never know.

  • @DemonOfMyMind
    @DemonOfMyMind 7 років тому

    Dude you should look at the spellshapers. Talk about underrated creatures. Spellshapers have a few gems. Jaya Ballard being the most well know but greenseeker I'd pretty boss. I've won games thanks to greenseeker. I've kept 1 land hands with that creature and proceeded to win the game through endless dredging and discard. Although my friends have caught onto the greenseeker threat and know to remove it so I don't usually keep 1 land hands with it anymore. Lose one too many time to it and they learn. Although greenseeker isn't that great later in the game it's value in those early turns can't be underestimated. Llanowar Mentor is another fantastic one with high value early in the game and can remain relevant in the mid game since it literally produces llanowar elves. That can't be understated. Dreamscape Artist is a 2 mana guy that sacrifices a land to let you search for 2 basics in blue no less. I haven't had the chance to use dreamscape but considering this gem is so cheap to get I'm going to pick up a play set most likely. Bog witch is 3 mana tap for a dark ritual on a stick. Dreamstrider fogs. Devout witness is a disenchant on a stick. There are plenty more of them that are great. Not all of them, mind you, but they have amazing utility that shouldn't be overlooked.

    • @JumboCommander

      These are very cool and I have NEVER played either of those awesome green ones. Great tech. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Arghore
    @Arghore 6 років тому

    Some of these might also be underplayed because they are above budget for budget, and not good enough for people without a budget? So they sort of fall in between the cracks … take those scry lands f/e, now i can play jungle hollow and get a tapped dual and gain a life for 20ct (if that), or i can pay $10,- to get a scry? But, if i'm willing to pay $10+ for cardboard, then there are just better lands out there … Now Dust Bowl vs Stripmine i can get into for the recursion value, Encrouching Wastes is a mixture of them both, 4 mana tap and sac to destroy a land, it's probably under 50ct and if you need to destroy a land you'd happily pay 4 mana. Bet it's underplayed even more ;)

    I think that Arcane Lighthouse is critically undervalued in a format plagued by commander protection, and that many decks undervalue Opal Palace. Opal doesn't belong in every deck by any means, but so many decks that would benefit from it just don't run it. Looking at you Yasova, Skullbriar, and pretty much any voltron commander.

    speaking of underrated cards, you used animists awakening as a background. i don't know what other peoples playgroups are like, but mine was very dismissive of the card originally, laughing at it as a really bad ramp spell. Over the course of a year, my Riku deck has slowly started changing peoples minds on the card, rarely is it ever hitting less than 3 lands and the fact it doesn't just bring them in untapped on mastery, but actually UNTAPS them (hello karoo's) has led to some crazy turns where suddenly i go from the player everyone is ignoring to literally playing archenemy (trust me when you go from 7 to 11+ lands and cast a dig/cruise etc to refill your hand all in the same turn people suddenly get worried what next turn is going to be, with good reason often enough).

    I differ on tolaria west I don't view it as underrated at all. In most blue decks that need land tutors it's always in there. I think an under rated on would be thespian stage because it's a vesuva but only when you want it to be. Or Grier reach sanitarium for being card draw in any color but for cheaper that Center of the Sea.

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  8 років тому

      My system for measuring "underrated" was a little suspect. I used command tower as the most "known and used" land and then tried to find lands that were rarely included. Thespian's Stage was used in about 1/3 more often than Tolaria West so it didn't reach my arbitrary "underrated threshold" but considering it can go in every deck while Tolaria West could only go in blue decks means that Thespian's Stage should have a larger impact and probably should have made the list. It's certainly a powerful land and a great suggestion for any deck.
      I really like Geier Reach Sanitarium and since it is so new it really hasn't moved into many decks (still under 1000); another good suggestion. Hopefully people read these comments so they get even more ideas for lands they can include. Cheers.

    Great video! +1 on Soldevi Excavations, love that card.
    What do you think on Ice Floe? I know it's a worse Maze of Ith, but hey, it's a really budget friendly replacement. Also by keeping the creature tapped, it can turn into a political card.

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  8 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. On Ice Floe, I think the card is interesting (I love playing with older cards that would never be made today) but I really wish that it had a little more. It could tap for mana and I would play it or if you could tap a creature during combat but before it attacked that would be ok. But I just hate having to lock down the creature after it has hit you once. I think it's close enough to be included for an interesting nostalgia card but I have yet to include it in any decks. Think I should reconsider? What type of deck do you think I should try it in?

      Well, I just watched your 40+ min video about Queen Marchesa (espectacular by the way, totally building it) and I would run it, or at leaste give it a try, there. "Want my crown? You'll never get your creature back". Then wait for your royal assassin to finish the job. Oh the flavor!

    Fast lands are bad, right? Since they only work if you have two lands already, and the chances of drawing a fast land card within your first two turns is so low?

      I love all of the Gitrog shenanigans. A few of my friends immediately built the deck so I didn't ... I guess I have to be happy with Borborygmos Enraged if I want to play with lands.

    Why would Myriad Landscape be different?
    Dual lands is still a Mountain/Plains or whatever combination.
    I don't get the difference.

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  8 років тому

      Krosan Verge can get any land that says "Forest" and any card that says "Plains" in the type line. So it can fetch a Stomping Ground (Land -- Mountain Forest) and a Tundra (counts as a plains and an island). Krosan Verge has some amazing mana fixing potential. Myriad Landscape cannot get anything besides basic lands and they have to be the same basic land. So it can get Forest and Forest ... or Plains and Plains. Still ramp but very poor fixing.

    • @Nah_Bohdi
      @Nah_Bohdi 8 років тому

      Jumbo Commander
      But the Gatecrash dual lands ARE Forest/______ or whatever combination.
      Says it right on the card type section.

    • @Nah_Bohdi
      @Nah_Bohdi 8 років тому

      PS: It says "Share a land type", both need to contain one, so G/W & G/R, 3 in one with two overlapping but they hardly that much less than Krosan Verge, unless you're playing 4 colors.

    protection from artifacts does that help against nevermal disk?

    • @JumboCommander
      @JumboCommander  7 років тому

      No, protection is a poorly designed mechanic which is why they are phasing it out. Here are the rules for protection:
      Damaged by sources with the specified quality. (All such damage is prevented.)
      Enchanted or equipped by permanents with the specified quality.
      Blocked by creatures with the specified quality.
      Targeted by spells with the specified quality, or by abilities from sources of that quality.
      Disk doesn't damage or target to destroy your stuff

    great list

  • @CommanderReplay
    @CommanderReplay 7 років тому

    The list is pretty good, but one card I disagree with. Terrain Generator just isn't that great. It is ok in some decks, but theres is almost always a better way to spend 3 mana, and if you don't have a better play someone else is probably blowing past you on board position. I tried it out in a number of decks and cut it for another basic. Just my thoughts.

    • @jeffswett4579
      @jeffswett4579 6 років тому

      Commander Replay I think you both are right and that yes you can find something better to do with 3 Mana in most decks. However if you look at the fact that rampant growth is only two Mana and a deck like mono White or mono red can't play rampant growth then I think the card is decent. Not to mention I picked up that card in a bulk bin for pennies and the cards you say that are more efficient with the three Mana are probably going to cost more it's a great budget choice but not just budget like you said it's also a redundancy. Just my two cents

      +ad45376 is nissa just great value in your command zone or are there specific cards that make her a really powerful commander?

    • @ad45376
      @ad45376 8 років тому

      my personal deck ends up being a sort of valuely deck but a really powerful one, because she always curves you toward ur turn 4 ramp spells like explosive vegetation, rangers path, oracle and so one effectively allowing you to keep subpar hands, while accelerating you towards ur finishers such as newlamog, blightsteel or kozalik. u also tend to hate out the usual ramp artifacts that are played since ur deck doesn't rely on them. lol i could keep writing about her, but in the end u can just lock out artifact based ramp deck quickly, u can easily start chaining ulamogs with temur saber cat and exile all ur opponents stuff. I should write a primer on my list XD.

    • @ad45376
      @ad45376 8 років тому

      my list is personally tuned to a more competetive meta, but cards like azuza, oracle, couser, rites of flourishing, sporemound , and avenger realy help her accelerate to flip, and benefit once she's flipped because she places lands on the battlefield. u can also run the sporemound/life and limb combo in the deck to make inifinate saprolings. I can post my 2 lists if ur interested. XD sorry for the long rambling.

  • @UltimateDrDoom
    @UltimateDrDoom 7 років тому

    No love for the lairs? Untapped tri color lands? You can do shenanigans with these with the bounce clause. You can generate the mana you need since the lairs come into play untapped. They're in original Shards color patterns. Too bad they didn't do the planar chaos versions.

    • @CommanderReplay
      @CommanderReplay 7 років тому +1

      The problem with the lairs is they put you a land behind, so they aren't very good. Stick with Shards of Alara and Khans tri lands instead.
