George Sluizer shot the feature film Red Desert Penitentiary around the locations where he did the filming for his short documentary Sweetwater Junction, made during the same period. The former is a film about making a film, in which the director himself plays the role of a domineering producer and most of the other roles are played by local non-professional actors.
While making his latest film, B-movie actor Dan McMan (singer-songwriter James Michael Taylor) feels that he’s being pursued by his own image, and hampered by the inexperience of his young co-star Myrna Greenbaum (Cathryn Bissell), a shy Marilyn Monroe lookalike who wants to be a sex goddess.
His trials and tribulations reach a crescendo when James Gagan (William Rose), the man his character is based on, appears on set to complain about the way the film is distorting his life story. In the meantime, McMan increasingly starts to take on the character’s traits, also outside of the film.
