+Julian Mercadal I heard your grandfather play during winter 1981 at F.I.T. campus in Jensen Beach FL. He performed not in our auditorium but in our chapel. I think he made a lot of new fans that night including me. He played superbly.
Hi Mike, I knew your grandfather for 4 years while I was at U of M from 1963 to 1967 ... I was a flamenco guitarist and I had some Sabicas music that someone had transcribed into regular music notation which I couldn't read. I asked him to "translate" and I would make schematics. Your grandfather had a great sense of humor ... we were always having "pissing contests" to see what was more difficult ... classical or flamenco. He would do something like play part of a piece just using harmonics and I would counter with something like the Sabicas triplet alzapua ... great fun. I am so happy to see some of his wonderful playing on UA-cam. Best, Tony
Hello Julian: I met your grandfather many years ago. He was a wonderful, warm and kind man; he was also a magnificent artist with a brilliant musical soul. I know that you miss him very much. He was a gift from heaven to the guitar.

Mike: Your grandfather and I were good friends. We were both born in Guanabacoa, Cuba and became friends in Miami. I have several pictures with him at his home and mine. The greatest musician I have ever met. I miss him. Kind regards to you.
Mike, your grandfather was a friend of Carlos Salmone, my luthier. He told me that Rodrigo's Aranjuez Concert was offerd to be played to Juan Mercadal but he didn't accept it. That's why it's played by Yepes and then became famous. If your grandfather had accepted it, he would be the famous one now. To his beloved memory.
Mike- I took private lessons from your grandfather at his home in Coral Gables in 1979-1980. Wonderful gentleman and musician. I think of him often. He needs to have his own page on Wikipedia!
I have been trying to find this CD for years and I have always been unsuccessful. I'm from Miami and I met Juan on a couple of occasions and really enjoyed the interaction. I would love to own a copy of this CD. I saw that his grandson commented below. Julian, is there any chance this CD will ever be available for downloading? I've enjoyed his Vizcaya records for so many years and it is a shame he did not record more often.
Hey William - I've been doing some digging on this as well (I also have the Vizcaya LP) and coming up with very few leads. I've also found a lot of conflicting info: some say the CD was made but never actually released, one said they got a copy from Juan's widow, Iris but yet worldcat shows three copies help by uni libraries across the US: www.worldcat.org/title/juan-mercadal-plays-great-miniatures/oclc/459795558 One lead also mentioned reaching out to Rene Gonzalez, a student of Juan's, to track down a copy. I think the best option might be getting in contact with Iris, who appears to still live in the Miami area. If you end up doing that, let me know!

I saw him play live in a small recital room and he sounded amazing!!!! That guitar sounded like a freaking piano....
