Sesame Street - George Benson - The Greatest Love of All (1982)

- Опубліковано 10 лип 2015
- From 1982, George Benson sings "The Greatest Love of All" to a group of kids. Written in 1977 for the Muhammad Ali biopic "The Greatest", by Michael Masser (that's him on the piano) and Linda Creed, George was the first to record this monster hit for Whitney Houston (1985). CLICK ON SHOW MORE FOR INFO AND LINKS!
Creed wrote the lyrics during her struggle with breast cancer. Weeks before Whitney's version hit #1, Linda succumbed to the disease (April 1986); she was only 37. In 1992 she was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In a sad twist of timing, her co-writer on this, Michael Masser, passed away just a couple of days ago (July 9, 2015), having never recovered from a stroke he had a few years ago. He was 74. A gentle reminder to grab life while you can, kids, it doesn't last forever.

I like to think those kids went on to do amazing things in life after they heard him sing this song.
The lyricist of this song, Linda Creed, wrote these lyrics in 1977, after discovering she had breast cancer...she died of this horrible disease in April 1986...surprisingly on the day Whitney’s version hit #1. It’s like she waited for the whole world to know and love her song...and when they did, she felt ready to go.
Just read about this before seeing your comment. She was frim Mt Airy, PA.
😢💔
I may be wrong but when she wrote this there was also some collaboration from Muhammed ali, i may have got my info mixed up though, it was many moons ago when i worked for George, my memories not as good as it used to be, very good comment by yourself anyway, its always nice to learn something new. Thank you.
That is so beautiful thank you for sharing
Beautiful written, Linda was a genius. May she remember forever
Well the song writer definitely got the world to hear it Especially after Whitney Houston did it with so much expression and feeling.
I love this version!!! He sings from the heart!!
Ofcourse... because he is the original version.. anthony B
Yeah
This is the best version of this song. And that's that folks.
I second that--I am not a particular fan of Whitney Houston's version, truth be told.
Privalleged to have been Georges Personal assistant and Valet in the 1980's, became good friends.
im in this, the guy in the blck suit with the camera towards the end, not a glory seeker just a 52 yr old guy who would love to go back to being 21

wonderful voice, and he's being really sweet with the kids in this, seems like a really good dude.
@@TomGallagherSuperboyBeyond he was (is) a genuinely all round wonderful and nice individual, it was a pleasure working for him, it never felt like work and he always had time in his ever so hectic and busy itinerary to take 5 minutes out to help me.
The look on the kids faces says it all doesn't it?
That little girl who yawns at the 2:36 part just touches my heart and I love the way George reacts!
can somebody teach that man to sing?
oh no need, that's perfection
Lol. I think George would agree that singing is not his greatest strength but I love it. It's earthy and real
Pure gold
@@walkingmonument Which is ironic cause he’s an excellent singer.
That performance was so natural, it actually made me shed a tear. You can see how transfixed the children are, they really appreciate that what they are hearing is really good
This is so beautiful. God bless George Benson.
It's still remarkable how much George sounds like Donny Hathaway at times, especially with the throaty, nasal, and heady tones. He, Donny, and Stevie had worked together on a project. It would have been the GOAT
I could see that being a big hit. If only
If anyone wishes to learn what "The voice's control" means, here you are !
My mom is in this song she is the girl with the braids
FS Rocket Cat little did she know that this guy singing this barely ok version, would become a world hit by the best female artist of all time.
@@miguelincendi7758 You sound like a fool! George had a beautiful, rich voice! He doesn't have the fireworks of a soprano, but his velvet tone is sufficiently pleasing to millions of fans, and FS Rocket Cat, your mom was a lucky girl!
I believe you
what a beautiful little girl - very attentive - taking it all in and loving being there in that special moment 1:51
Your mom is gorgeous
This is a gem, Mr. Benson makes "effortlessness" sheer genius. Nat "King" Cole had this same gift of presentation, and no wonder George did such a wonderful tribute to Mr. Cole, recently, on recording and tour...there is a parallel in artistry. And what a timely tribute to the memory of Muhammad Ali, the greatest...love of all. Thank you and bless them all.
I love George Benson and I love Nat King Cole. But I have to say that I feel so sorry for George being compared to NKC. As much as I love him, he's not even close.
George always did a Nat king cole tribute whilst we were touring, my favourite part of the evening.
I love George Benson's version of this song. Pure and beautiful.
I agree the tune is great and he did it well. Unfortunately, it's teaching is poison spiritually.
@@donaldwilliamfry how so?
@@NK-vd8xi No person is an island. We all need other people and we definitely need God. People who follow this philosophy will inevitably come to the point where they realize they are also disappointed in themselves. God is the center and the source. Once we get to know God, the other relationships begin to fall into place. Putting self at the center will always leave us flat eventually.
@@donaldwilliamfry I get where you're coming from. Though this needn't be contradictory to the love for God. Expecting little to nothing from other people and focusing on oneself and depending on oneself alone isn't bad. It doesn't mean we shouldn't help others, it means we should be extra grateful when people do help us.
@@donaldwilliamfry purpose of song went right over your head I think. That’s ok, it truly speaks to some of us. A million people can hear a song, and there are a million different interpretations.
The little girl with long plaits had tears.
Look at those kids, they're totally raptured by the spell of that velvet voice!
I didn't know this version of Benson, until several years after listening to Whitney Houston's, in 1985, from her first album and that was one of her biggest hits. I am a fan of both. George is a musical genius.
This is the key George sung this song in at the West Hollywood Roxy Theater in 1977 for the album Weekend In L.A., and this Sesame Street cut of it is so precious, it almost brings you to tears. RIP Linda Creed, Whitney Houston, and Michael Masser. Your soul man, guitar master, and longtime friend Mr. Benson remains alive and well, still carrying on the shared musical legacy and joyous singing spirit into today. This is a wonderful look back at a snippet of what wholesome children's programming is all about.
A wonderful vocal performance by George!
Pure magic. Oh MAN!
This song is for little kids, grown ups & young adults 🎓 graduations 🎓 👏
Soft but intense!
The greatest song of all ❤️.. Thank you, Mr. Benson. You're the greatest!
By far, the best version of this song -- live or studio.
Whenever I hear this song, be it George Benson or Whitney singing it, my tears flow uncontrollably. I have no idea why.
My favorite Whitney song even though it’s a a cover of George’s. This is so cute and look at the kids faces. Precious
I love it 😍
Gosh, the little girl yawning at 2:36 is so cute
Quite simply stated, this is the most profoundly inspiring clip of any George Benson art to date.
I remember hearing this version on Sesame Street before Whitney Houston’s. They are both beautiful.
When non prime time children's TV had more talent than 2022s entire output/Tough audience...yawning through a masterpiece at 2.38.
it’s 2023, i’m 19. this still moves me to tears. it’s the melody, they can’t ignore it.
Wow but I have always loved George Benson's version of this song. Pure and the greatest version of all. Look at the adoring faces of these kids. They simply loved the song as well.
Especially that sweet girl with the plaits. Her smile is so beautiful like it would be belong to an angel.
What a great singer... What a great composter. RIP Michael Masser... Thanks for great post!!
Michael Masser stole this from Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind"
Best version
He is the Original version..
I was flipping the channels back in the day when by coincidence I saw this young man singing this song. Brilliant. This was the first time I saw and heard this man sing and first time I heard the song....MAGNIFICENT .Summer 1982
Beautiful vibrato in his voice
Beautiful song
The BEST Version of This Song!
I hope all those kids are somewhere happy with a fantastic career and loving families of their own
George Benson’s phrasing his poise and his style of singing kind of reminds me of Sam Cooke!
So sincere...and to clarify, Benson recorded this tune first and performed it for years before Whitney ever covered it....even this version was years prior to Whitney reviving it
George you are the man!!
Grande George Benson..
Seeing Michael Masser brings tears to my eyes. He was so very very special. Only a genius could have composed music the way that he did, one song after the other.
What a beautiful voice.
0:19🎼I Believe The Children Are Our Future🎼
This is for my two NIECES, Kemmie and Kammie. Love you!!! 🙏
I wonder if the kids in the video ever got to see Houston's amazing live performances of this song. I'm sure they did. What an beautiful song from start to finish.
I chose this song for the mother-son dance at my wedding in 1990. I had never heard his Sesame Street rendition until just now -- just amazing!
would love to see a reunion of all in this song!
RIP to the Greatest.
He's still alive
Phoebe Bloomfield I think he was talking about Muhammad Ali
@@PB-xr6yi Well, to Whitney Houston
OG sesame street
It's great to hear his beautiful performance around his 79 birthday and this difficult moment.
Makes me cry
I fall in love with this version so much. Thank you so much Benson. Kiss .....
BEST EVER VERSION OF THE WHOLE HISTHORY OF MUSIC. :)
Beautiful.
nice
Linda Creed one of the best song writers of all time.
Grande George!
That was simply breathtaking!!❤️ I wonder if any of those children will some day say: “George Benson sang The Greatest Love of All when I was a child and he inspired me to become a singer”. I hope so. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP Ali
OMG! Child hood flash back! ❤️❤️💯💯
A great guitarist who made it cause he can sing.
I simply love this song. Watched it when I was little and so happy to have found it! Beautiful...
Wow, wow how absolutely wonderful George Benson 🤗 xx
george benson his the best of all
I absolutely fell in love with this song, when it was the only version. Before Randy Watson...lol
Whitney Houston
This Was Randy Watson Idol LOL 😆 Seriously Though George is In Class By Itself
This Was Randy Watson Idol LOL 😆 Seriously Though George is In Class By Itself
I so love this version of George Benson of the song. One of a gem of a song and his version.
great voice!!!!!!!
Just incredibly beautiful!
I watched this live on television 35 years with my son. I now sing it to his 5 year old twin bots.
.
A HEART-CRUSHINGLY beautiful song.....enhanced even MORE by these cute kids (look at those INCREDIBLE faces !!), ESPECIALLY when they do wonderfully ADORABLE stuff like this ====> (2:37) !!
And watch George's GREAT reaction, in the moment, to that 'adorable' yawn......though it's not (quite) on camera, it looks like he can't help but give her a quick little caress on the cheek, almost as if to say, "I know, sweetie, it's been a long day......" !!
.
This man is a treasure
Mr Benson ❤❤❤❤❤❤
A genuine smile from the children...nourishing.... and the voice, its epic...
Jesus!! So beautifull please save ours childrens!!

George rockin the cool threads!
Polyester tho, looks cool....but sweaty!😣😅
I love Whitney, but I like George Benson’s version better. What a song!
Happy birthday 🎉🎂 ( One of best 🌷🌷
Perfection!
Love this song. IMO George Benson's version is better, but I love Whitney Houston's too. Didn't know this was on Sesame Street. Brings tears to my eyes.
Remember watching it - made me cry. Still does a little bit :-)
Learning just now who wrote it and why will really get the eye waters flowing.
😢💔😭
I still cry when I hear this version of this beautiful song. It makes me yearn of the simpler times as a little girl who looks forward to watching to Sesame Street (and still does).
This is the greatest song of all
Great Georges Benson
I love the part at 2:42 where the little lady yawns and Mr.Bensons response. What a nice man and beautiful song
I love this song❤
These kids would be in their mid-40s today.
I missed you Mr. Michael Masser of the best composer.
Ali was the greatest. Michael is really playing that instrument and it is George Benson's song. Ali came to Kennedy Square in Downtown Detroit to promote his movie. He was dressed in a suit and tie. He challenged anyone in the crowd to hit him. No one could. His speed was just amazing .As his limo was leaving, he waved to me. He must have noticed me watching him.
1:56 she is so pretty!
Stanley Simmons she's my aunt! 😊
really or is this a joke?
Hearing Whiteny sing this as a teenager, I always felt she'd written it about me. Now seeing that a guy had wrote it I know it was written about me and my life, facts
Very nice voice!
Как же это прекрасно!
This is brilliant, so heartfelt...beautiful
Thank you for sharing this beautiful rendition on UA-cam. So wonderful how he sings this important message to this children.
Is this the sweetest thing you have ever seen? x
This segment premiered in Episode 1309 on 5/17/1979.
imagine how this song touch Whitney, with her past as a child who been abused in many senses. It really should be painful to her sing this, but also is so powerful that she takes her pain and turns in a inspirational and memorable interpretation.
Es difícil transmitir más de lo que lo hace George Benson en cada cosa que hace. Qué maravilla.
