    The shehnai in this piece is so hauntingly beautiful. By the way I recently watched a video in which Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahab and Sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab were singing as well apart from playing their respective instruments. It was a delight hearing them sing Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal Ched Gayo Re.

    Its called voice of moon for that reason. It makes you feel the pull of the moon's gravity. It takes the high and low tide as a conversation between the ocean and the moon. Hence the raise and drops in tempo. Just divine

      I got tears by the end of it, brought up overwhelming emotions.. is that also perhaps connected to the nature of the moon? Like the lunar impact on the mind...

    • @yogmayasingh6574
      @yogmayasingh6574 2 роки тому +18

      In fact the word Indu or Indira (beautiful like the moon, chand jaisa mukhda) that we often use for the moon in Hindi actually is related to the root उन्द् (und, “to flow or issue out, spring (as water); to wet, bathe”), ultimately root cognate with English water.
      The moon is said to induce the flow state in people (for art). You need both thehrav (stability) and flow in order to have a balanced life. So the sun is said to give thehrav to emotions but movement to body, while the moon is said to give thehrav to the body and movement or motion to the mind. Also, I can't find the source now, but remember reading this well that the word 'indriya' (sense organs) actually comes from indu (moon) + dravya (liquid or rush of hormones). If one is controlled by the senses, then one is said to be too flowy (the difference between a river flowing normally and when it is flooded). Hope you didn't mind me sharing this bit.

      @@aninditabhattacharya1715 you are welcome. :) Think of the word ya kundendu in Saraswati Vandana. Kund is the Hindi name for Jasmine flower, so kundendu means she who is (a heart/mind) white like the jasmine flower (nishchal, without any chhal kapat in my understanding)... Also, I once misread the word flower as flow-er or things that flow and it isn't too wrong. The Hindi word Pushpa for flowers means palna posna, to nourish along with something that blossoms. In fact the word was used to denote periods in women (source: the website wisdomlib) and flowers are a sign that the earth is ovulating well (my interpretation). As we know our ovulation is affected by the moon. There is a goldmine out there when it comes to words. I just love etymology. Also, Saraswati kind of means sah (she, wah, wo)+ ras (ras, juice, navras, ras leela, rasayan, fluid, flow, essence, flow of joy) + wati ( possesses)...as in wah jo ras wati hai, wah jo ras se poorn hai. We all know Goddess Saraswati is the goddess of arts. Also, her vehicle Hansa is a distortion/अपभ्रंश of the word Ham sah, coming from Aham Sah (I am that). (Source: again Wisdo lib). That might be too much to take in, but just felt like sharing.

    I would like to recommend a performance by Anouksha Shankar along with Patricia Kopatchinskaja (a well-known Moldovan-Austrian-Swiss violinist) playing a composition based on Indian classical Raag Piloo (5 million views). You can input these names with the term raag Piloo in UA-cam to easily find it.
    The piece was written by Ravi Shankar and was a part of first records on east-west collaboration (with Yehudi Menuhin). They also played the same piece at the United Nations in 1967.
    About Patricia Kopatchinskaja, she has won many awards throughout her music career. The British Royal Philharmonic Society in 2014 gave Kopatchinskaja one of its annual Music Awards in the instrumentalist category, calling her an "irresistible force of nature: passionate, challenging and totally original in her approach"

    I think one of the reasons classical Indian music touches the heart is that the instruments are all played in such a way as to resemble the human voice's subtle inflections as closely as possible. I also find it amazing how complex a sound can be created by using "only" melody and rhythm without harmonic structure and modulation like in western music.
