FIX: Technics FM Stereo Reception

  • If your Technics receiver won't go into FM Stereo mode, here's a simple fix. In this example we are using an SA-202.
    First, be sure you are capable of opening the cabinet and working safely. While you will not need to use your bare hands on anything, there is dangerous voltage inside the receiver. Just be aware.
    Remove the three small screws along the upper back of the cabinet which hold the top "screen" in place. You should not remove the wood side panels, front, rear or bottom. This fix is done from the top.
    See the quick video for the adjustment you need to make to bring back FM Stereo reception.
    I hope this helps you!
    Thanks for watching.

    I have an SA-505 with the same issue. Naturally, the numbers of all of the components are different on my board (no VR129)... BUT, I noticed the "VCO" marking next to the variable resistor that you adjusted and made the assumption that the variable resistor on my 505 with "VCO" next to it was comparable to your VR129... and it was! I made the adjustment and I'm now listening to FM stereo. Thanks for the video!

    There will be 2 different pots to adjust for Stereo. Another for the stereo light. You're looking for upper and lower IF FM. Tune to a strong station near 90.1 Turn the pot till it's distorted, then turn it until it's perfectly clear. Then tune to a station near 100.1 and do the same. This may already light the stereo light. If not the receiver may also have a stereo light adjustment. Turning that back and forth should turn on the lamp. Always take pictures of the pots before you start turning them. Gives you a baseline.

      The process I shared was strictly for aligning the stereo indicator. Thanks for adding your comment.

    Hi, I've got an early 1980's Sony stereo receiver that has the exact same symptoms as your Technics. I just need to find a service manual and find and adjust the pot. I hope it's as simple as you showed. Cross your fingers for me. :-)
    Thanks for showing how to solve this problem!

      Most service manuals point out the FM(and AM) alignment points. They will say to use a signal generator, etc. But if it just drifted due to age, like most vintage gear, you can probably turn it a slight but in each direction and find the sweet spot where the stereo goes on. Good luck!

      @@JackT_Music_on_Vinyl Jack, Thanks for your suggestion and help. I've got a Sony STR-AV760 stereo receiver. Interesting thing here, but I originally wondered if the stereo indicator light was out. I accidently tuned an FM Stereo station a bit off the proper frequency and the red "stereo" light flickered a little. The good news is that the bulb (or LED) is still good. I'm guessing that this is a good sign that I need to adjust the pot to solve my problem.

      @@JackT_Music_on_Vinyl Jack, I went online and found a Sony service manual for my Sony STR AV760 Stereo Receiver. I did find the pot, RT 205 and where it's located on the main board. I was somewhat concerned when it showed using a signal generator to adjust this pot. But, having read your message and seeing you adjust your own pot, I'm fairly convinced I can make this adjustment. I'm rather busy right now, but plan to give this a try in the very near future. I'll let you know how it goes.
      Thanks again for all your help.

      @@THOMMGB Great! One last word of caution, please be careful and safe when you do this as the cabinet will be open and there is voltage exposed. Be sure you use one hand and do not touch any other parts or the metal chassis with the other. Use either a plastic screwdriver or one that has a plastic handle as I did. Go slow and you should find the right sweet spot. Also, make sure you tune a strong FM station so you're working with a good signal. Good luck!

      Thanks for watching. Unfortunately receivers vary greatly but if you could find a shop manual online for that, or even similar, Realistic receivers you might look for FM alignment procedures. They would likely identify a coil or other adjustment on the circuit board for that purpose.

    • @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl
      @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Chaz. This could be dirt in the older style variable capacitor. That is the tuning cap that turns inside the receiver and is probably attached to a dial cord. I would use a can of compressed air on it first. Others have used a little bit of (aerosol) tuner cleaner with some success.

      I'm sorry, I have no quick answer. If both AM and FM are not working, it could be one of several things. A dried out capacitor or bad IC on the circuit board could do it but the safest way to go would be take it to a tech who is familiar with servicing vintage audio.

    • @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl
      @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl  2 роки тому

      No. That would be a different issue. Something in the amp or preamp section. On an older receiver it could be caused by many different things including an aging capacitor somewhere. I would refer to a service tech, to be sure--and safe.

    I have aiwa csd-es40 cd/radio receiver. Low band section of the FM section (half of the FM band) does not tuning. Upper band is working fine. I replaced all e caps in fm section. I saw one 100pf cap is having broken leg. One leg has fixed to 7pin of front end fm ic. Other leg is missing. I fixed a new cap to the ic and ground. I also replaced 10.7Mhz resonator. I also cleaned the tuner. But nothing solved the problem. Pls help me.

    • @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl
      @JackT_Music_on_Vinyl  2 роки тому +1

      Sanjaya, sometimes the least electronic problems are hard to diagnose. When a tuner spends most of its life on the upper end of the FM band and rarely down on the low end the amount of oxidation of the contacts when tuned down low effectively renders it dead at those freqs. How the tuner reacts at that point depends on the how the cap is wired and the kind of local oscillator design used so symptoms can vary.
      Have you tried cleaning the fingers on each of the gangs of the tuning cap with contact cleaner to ensure they are clean? Tuning back and forth across the low end of the band (power off) while you let the contact cleaner work is an excellent method. Only after you have eliminated any other mechanical issues, you may want to try adjustments. But without alignment gear for this purpose, FM receiver alignment can be difficult and is best left to a receiver tech if you can find one in your area. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. As this deals with FM radio wave reception, the answer may be hard to find through trial and error.

      Hello Dilip. I do not know the answer to this, regarding the reciever you have, but the manual is downloadable online from several sources. Be sure to get the "service" manual which usually shows adjustments, where they are located on the physical circuit board and what they do. If you do it yoursefl, be careful around the voltages in the cabinet. Even with the power off and line cord unplugged, the power supply capacitors can store high voltages. Good luck.
